Did I Get A Scam/Spam Xfinity Sales Call?

This afternoon (08/12/22) I received a pre-recorded voicemail supposedly from Comcast Xifinity. The number that called me was [Edited: "Personal Information"] in Rochester, NY.

The full message was:

”Hi there I'm calling you from Comcast Xfinity to let you know that your existing account is qualified for 50% off in order to avail the discount kindly call us back at [Edited: "Personal Information"] from 8 AM to 5 PM Pacific standard time thank you and have a great day.”

Is this message ligitimate? If not, who do I report it to? And how do I report it?

Thank you!

I was scammed for $400. I was offered $79.99 a month for three years if I paid in advance with a Target gift card. The number to call is [Edited: "Personal Information"] ext 1. The promo Cade is XTV 682423T. Unfortunately I bought the gift card with a debit card instead of a credit card so now I can’t get my money back.

Have you gotten a call claiming to be from Comcast asking you to buy gift cards or paying upfront for six months or more in exchange for 50% off your bill?  If so, the FTC is well aware of this scam.  If you get a call like this you can report it to     https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/

This scam is still going around. I was left a voice mail about this promotion on Feb 13, so I called the number just today, Feb 23. It all sounds and seems legit, but when I was told and then saw in the email that I asked to be sent to me, that you pay with a Target Gift Card, I was very skeptical and told them I would need to check with Comcast/Xfinity at another number. I then logged onto my account and decided to check the Community Forum. They won't get any money from me!!

I received a voicemail about xfinity/target promotion about saving 50% of my entire bill until June. It’s very shameful that I fell for it. Does xfinity have data bridge that they’re unaware of? They had all my account information. They brought my balance to $0. They knew my name, phone #, address. Does xfinity even care? Maybe it’s time to move on. Because my service provider couldn’t not protect data. If they are able to mirror my account and act like they xfinity costumer service what else do they have? My card info! Big companies like xfinity are always lazy and careless protecting their customers. From what I can see online, this scam has been going on for a while and they haven’t done anything about it. It soooo shameful and careless of you xfinity.

Data breach?  Likely so. And they are handling it incredibly poorly.

No public response from Xfinity, but here's a few articles someone linked.

https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/email/my-account-was-compromised-with-2fa-on-how-is-this-possible/63a2dc38ebc755162835f70a?commentId=63a997af86efae732c84b5c9

One thing you are going to want to do immediately, is log into webmail, click the little gear icon in the top right to get to "email settings", then on the left tab, make sure BOTH auto forward and auto reply are not enabled, and that no unknown email address is listed at either one.

The other thing you are going to want to do is unlink your Xfinity email address from any other website/banking/other service that has your Xfinity email address listed as a password recovery address.  If you use the same password across multiple sites (they all should be different), change that immediately on all of them, and don't use the same password that you use for Xfinity.

Logs on a server I run show at least the username/email address and a hashed password have leaked, but if they got those, they have billing info too.  Hashed passwords and credit card information will have to be decrypted, and isn't worth the processing time/effort, but for phone scams and stealing credentials on other sites, this information is useful.  Password information is also useless once you change them.  Credit card charges can be disputed and reported as fraud with a simple phone call, so no problem there either.

Do not respond to a phone solicitation of any kind.  Even from a known company you use.  Instead.  Don't say anything. Hang up.  Look up the company's phone number and initiate the contact yourself from now on.  It's the only way you know who you are talking to.

How was the scammer able to mirror our Xfinity account and get my phone number to send me a text with? Do you not have better web site security, especially given that this scam has apparently been going on for some time?

We were contacted about price reduction with Target gift card scam. We didn't provide any information or furnish a gift card but our bill shows it was just paid. Has our account been compromised? We use two step verification, no notification for two step was sent to my phone prior to payment posted text message.  We just changed our account password and removed our credit card info. Anything else we need to do?

I received a call stating I'm entitled to a 50% discount for having Comcast.  I think it's a trick or fraudulent tactic to get information.

Did you call?  Do you have a 50% off for customers?

A few days ago I received a call from a fake Xfinity rep that was automated. The voicemail sounds legit with Xfinity callback number to receive a discount on my existing services. I would only pay $79.99 a month for two years with no contract and can cancel anytime. Call them back Mon-Fri 9-4 PST. at [Edited: "Personal Information"].

Called them back and a guy said I qualified for this promo and needed to take advantage of it now as the discount ends in two days. I only had to pay the $320 upfront and use promo code "XRZ990" when calling the billing department. The guy went by "Smith". He gave the billing department phone number of [Edited: "Personal Information"] ext. 1 to talk with the billing Supervisor.

I called this number today and chose Ext.1. It went strait to "Smith" again and asked him why it did not go to the billing department. He couldn't answer and placed me on hold. Another man came on and he pretended to be the billing Supervisor.  He asked me to verify my address and I did unfortunately, but I asked him to verify my Xfinity account number and he stated "Ok", then placed me back on hold and never came back.

They have hold music and it sounds like a call center in the background. I can't believe they have the Xfinity customer service call center setup to sound so legitimate.

[Edited: "Language"] for people who don't catch on to them and somehow give them their credit card or bank account info thinking that they will get this fake $79.99 a month no tax if they pay the initial $320 to start.

How do they have our Xfinity info and please do whatever it takes to secure our customer info so that we don't all fall victim to this scam.

It's scam, a very nasty scam that's been reported here in the Forums a lot recently. See any of the many posts at https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/search?page=1&sortKey=RECENT&q=scam. Customers have lost a lot of money.

A competent company would have posted prominent warnings about a widespread scam that has cheated many and appears to use leaked customer data, but Comcast hasn't bothered to do that. They really should.

I’ve been receiving phone calls regarding a 50% discount on my Xfinity account for months.  I decided to answer the latest call from [Edited: "Personal Information"]; it had me call [Edited: "Personal Information"].  A person with a foreign accent answered (since Xfinity uses foreign people for customer service, I wasn’t to suspicious at first) offered no contract 3 years guarantee discount.  The message and music while being on hold made it seem like I was speaking with Xfinity.  They knew my phone number.  It sounded like a scam when they said Target was subsidizing this discount and I would need to pay the first 6 months with either a Target credit card or gift cards upfront.  It tried to dissuade me from opening a Target card because Target credit card has a $100 annual fee (that’s a lie).   Unfortunately, I gave them my zip code, which they can associate with my phone number.  Anyway, I told them I’ll call back after I get the Target credit card, which I’m not.

Hello @user_76618a We appreciate you taking the time to reach out to us today and thanks for spreading awareness for this issue. Since they were asking for a Target Gift Card, this was a scam as we would never ask for that method of payment. We also do not off 50% off discounts though I'd be happy to explore plan options with you if you'd like. I would also suggest reporting this to the FTC. This link explains more about common phone scams and how to report them. https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/protect-yourself-phone-scams Please let us know if you need help with anything else. Yes, I fell for it! $330 lighter as of today. I finally got through a live Xfinity agent and I explained her my problem she said she ll put me through to the it department (I was unable to get in my account as well after the fraud happened) and she just dropped the call. I am saying she did it because she never called back.

I totally believe what others voiced in their comments, this must be an Xfinity inside job, probably from the overseas department.

The scammers knew everything about my account, email associated with it, how much I paid every month, the package I had, Everything. Also, their voicemail sounded exactly like the Xfinity one. As a 10 years customer I feel very unprotected now and disrespected by Xfinity. Coming here I see Xfinity is well aware of this scam for months, but I did not receive one single text letting me know about it, to be on the lookout. I am not tech/internet savvy, and I fell for it.and now, being on a fixed budget, I ll have to cancel/downgrade my services to make up for the $330 lost. I believe Xfinity and target share some guilt in this. Target is taking advantage of this scam since their gift cards are selling, and Xfinity is not losing anything since they do not reimburse/prorate the losses for their loyal customers, even if they knowingly let them be defrauded again and again.

The greed and the carelessness both companies show is outrageous. I will report both companies and the scam and I hope a class suit action will follow. I am extremely disappointed and this is when I couldn't believe Xfinity can get any lower. I pay $115/month for good internet, that is at best running at 50% of what s advertised, but since they are a monopoly in the area I did not have many recourses.

It is disheartening how powerless the customers are whenever we deal w Xfinity.

No help and awful customer support. That lady, hearing I just lost $330, and after an hour long call, she just dropped me and did not call back.

Hello. Thank you for reaching out. We are committed to keeping you protected. Below are steps to help keep yourself protected.

Protecting Yourself From Fraud

We’re committed to helping you stay protected

Protecting you is one of our top priorities, and we have dedicated significant resources to keeping your account safe and secure. We have multiple layers of security that automatically detect and block hundreds of thousands of cyber events every second and a team of security experts who work to protect you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Protect Yourself From Fraud

Your first line of protection is to enable two-step verification on your account. This extra step will help keep your account safe, even if someone gets your password. Once you enable two-step verification, we’ll text or email you a verification code before we allow an unrecognized device to sign in to your account.

Remember: Never share your verification code with anyone.

Also, you can manage and control your Xfinity account settings such as your username and password, authorized users, parental controls, saved payment methods and more through your account.

There are additional ways you can be proactive to ensure protection of your Xfinity account. First and foremost: Trust your gut. If a communication, whether it be an email, text message, or phone call claiming to be from Comcast or Xfinity, seems suspicious in asking for payment or personal information, call us at 800-xfinity (800-934-6489) to verify if the communication is legitimate.

Common Fraud Techniques

Bad actors may also try to impersonate Xfinity representatives or websites to obtain your personal information. Here are just a few ways to identify potential threats:

  • Fake payment requests
    • Xfinity will not request a specific payment method such as merchant gift cards, wire transfer, PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle®.
      • If you receive an unexpected call, text, or email requesting that you make a payment on your account, we recommend you check your account balance first.
      • Then make a payment directly through the Xfinity website or thru the Xfinity app.
    • Xfinity representatives will never ask for your username and password over the phone.
    • Bad actors may have gained access to your personal information such as address, account number, balance due and even last payment amount on your Xfinity bill.
      • Always confirm you are interacting with authorized Xfinity representative before engaging in any transaction.
    • When instructed to make a payment through a link in an email, be sure the webpage you are redirected to is secure.
      • To do that, simply click on the lock symbol in the address bar to verify the connection is secure.
  • Deceptive emails and phone calls
    • Bad actors rely on misdialed phone numbers or making imposter calls from similar numbers to obtain your account and payment information.
      • If you’re unsure whether the person on the line is an authorized Xfinity representative, hang up and call 800-xfinity (800-934-6489).

      • If you see a misspelling, low-resolution image or graphic, or other mistakes and inconsistencies, delete the communication, navigate away or contact us.

  • Misleading websites
    • Some bad actors purchase similar website addresses to Xfinity – often with subtle typos or misspellings – to take advantage of people who accidentally navigate to those sites.
      • Once there, they may prompt you to make fake purchases, confirm or update your account credentials or install malware on your devices.
    • These sites may be accompanied by creative replicas that look like popular websites like ours – or that of an authorized Xfinity partner – and may request you to confirm or update your account credentials.
      • Always double-check that the web address you’ve typed into your address bar is correct.
      • The correct address for Xfinity is xfinity.com.
