I never get close to the "up to 500Mbps" speed I pay for. Will it get even slower if I downgrade to "up to 300Mbps"??

The whole "guaranteed up to 500Mbps" language is maddening. It means nothing, or maybe, "we won't give you more than 500". If I wire a fast device to the (fast) modem i can get about 230Mbps.
