I never get close to the "up to 500Mbps" speed I pay for. Will it get even slower if I downgrade to "up to 300Mbps"??

The whole "guaranteed up to 500Mbps" language is maddening. It means nothing, or maybe, "we won't give you more than 500".

If I wire a fast device to the (fast) modem i can get about 230Mbps. I don't get close to 500 so, my question is, if I save money by downgrading to 300, will my data rate be slowed further?

user_9yobjz Hello! Thank you for reaching out to us here on our Community Forum. We advise speeds "up to" because speeds will fluctuate normally especially if you primarily use a wireless connection. There are things within a home that may cause the speeds not to be as fast as they can (brick walls, placement of modem, internal wiring). Your speeds should still be close to the advertised speed you are paying for. Since you mentioned you are receiving speeds of about half of what you should be seeing, please send a Direct Message with your full name and address so that we can investigate this further. Here are instructions on how to send a DM in case you need them:

 Click "Sign In" if necessary
  • Click the "Direct Message" icon (upper right corner of this page)
  • Click the "New message" (pencil and paper) icon
  • Type "Xfinity Support" in the to line and select "Xfinity Support" from the drop-down list
  • Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window
  • Press Enter to send your message

Hi,

Firstly, I am not talking about Wi-Fi speeds, as I said in my question. The main question I would like answered remains.  If we reduce my service speed to 300 from 500, will my internet speed be slowed from where it is at? (around 230 ish).

No worries!  Apologies for the disconnect @user_9yobjz.  There honestly isn't a clear answer to your question.  If you are always running at 300 but paying for 500, your speed could stay the same, or it could fluctuate lower.  That is cause for concerns.  We here want to ensure that your experience with your service is top tier.  Our bigger concern is that if you are paying for 500 and only getting 300 and below constantly, that could be a sign of a connectivity issue at your location.  Would it be okay for us to take a closer look at things to determine why you aren't getting the speeds you are paying for?
