XG1v4 4k DVR no signal to TV blue screen

Works fine until I switch HDMI input to other source like Xbox or Blu-ray then when I switch back to XG1v4 the TV displays a blue screen. I have to manually disconnect the HDMI cable from the back of the XG1v4 and plug it back in to watch my TV shows. I believe this is being caused by a failed HDCP "handshake" between the XG1v4 and my Samsung KS8500. Since this started happening only after upgrading from the old X1 DVR to the new XG1v4, I have to blame the newest component. I read another post on blue screen issues and laughed when the "service expert" suggested a short with the TV. Please don't insult me like that. And yes, I've already disconnected power and coaxial cable and waited 5 minutes and reconnected and It still does it. I swapped HDMI cords to a high quality cable, and tried different HDMI inputs on the TV. I don't think I should have to "trick" the XG1v4 to re-establish signal with my TV by pulling the HDMI cable every time it blue screens.

What's the solution?

go into (gear) settings, comcast labs and turn off HDMI link. the set top box will currently work best left fully on 24/7

Did this solution work?  Having the same XG1v4 issues with a Samsung TV.   Isn't an issue with the TV...DISH worked fine until three days ago when I switched to Comcast.   Looking for a real solution.

Re: XG1v4 4k DVR no signal to TV blue screen

I called tech support and at the same time the blue screen was displayed on my screen the technician noticed a "resolution error" being reported by the XG1v4 4k DVR on his end. After running through other checks he deemed the box needed to be replaced so he sent me a new one. Well, with the replacement XG1v4, I am still experiencing the same exact problem with the blue screen being displayed after switching back from another source to the XG1v4 on my Samsung KS8500. One of the things he had me do was press the "EXIT" button 3 times followed by 1080 (I think this was the command) which resets the resolution on the XG1v4 to 1080i and this removed the blue screen. Although this is not a fix, it makes me wonder if there is a 4k resolution compatability issue with the XG1v4 and my Samsung KS8500. HDMI Link setting was already turned OFF on the replacement box so this isn't a solution. I use a Samsung UHD Blu-ray player, Xbox One, and Android TV box all set to a 2160 4k resolution and no other sources freak out and display a blue screen when switching between inputs. What's going on here?

Re: XG1v4 4k DVR no signal to TV blue screen

I had already disabled power saving mode on the old XG1v4 because I also suspected the box was going to "sleep" and causing a blue screen. Power saving is also disabled on the replacement box I received. Other customers are reporting this issue with Samsung TV. I don't believe this is an isolated case or a simple menu setting.

Re: XG1v4 4k DVR no signal to TV blue screen

I also set the resolution to 1080p to see if the blue screen only happened with 4k resolution. No difference, still have the blue screen after switching HDMI inputs back to the XG1v4. Also confirmed that my TV has the latest firmware and just for the heck or it, reset the TV. After going through two XG1v4 boxes and experiencing the same exact blue screen, I firmly believe this is an issue with the XG1v4 box. Still waiting for an answer from someone at Comcast.

Re: XG1v4 4k DVR no signal to TV blue screen

I fear you're in for a long wait.  I had Comcast back to my house four times over the past two+ weeks.  (I'vew been a customer for 2+ weeks).   So far I have had four techs and one tech supervisor visit.  They have replaced all the wiring they installed twice.  Replaced the XG1v4 once.   Guess what..."It must be your TV sir".   These Techs are all great guys and really want to help, but this issue is well beyond what they can do.   One even showed me a video on YouTube showing the blue screen issue on a Sony TV's.  Wait...I have a Samsung TV dude!   He actually had to look at my TV to realize.   Anyway, this is an issue that a tech wont be able to help with.   Comcast will insist it's not their "equipment", but really they are only checking the grounds, connections, and signal strength.   It is an issue with the XG1v4.   I never had a problem with this TV (which is 2 years old) with Dish Network.   Good luch Rescuecheck!   I'm with you!

Re: XG1v4 4k DVR no signal to TV blue screen

Thanks for the info. In my case I'm 100% sure this is being caused by the XG1v4 since this blue screen issue only started happening after upgrading from the old 1080p X1 DVR. It's the same Samsung KS8500. Went through two XG1v4 boxes and they both created the same blue screen. Comcast needs to get a brand new Samsung 4k TV and hook it up to a brand new XG1v4 and see if they can duplicate and hash this out with a firmware upgrade to the XG1v4. All they need to do is switch input to a different source like a Xbox One and play a game for an hour and then switch back to the XG1v4 input to watch TV and they will for sure be greeted with a blue screen that has nothing to do with a power saving setting, hdmi link setting, bad cables, or house wiring! These techs need to get it together and tell us what the real solution is.

A search of this forum shows blue screens as far back as 2014.

For those responding to ComcastElla it would also be helpful if you could supply a date and time for your last occurance of the issue along with the exact model of the TV and if you're connected directly to the TV or through an AVR. We want to make sure we have as much informtion as possible to help dubug the issue.

A blue screen usually means there is a disconnect somewhere so reseating all coax connections sometimes fixes the issue.  Otherwise, a tech visit might help.

Hi Clags,

Please send me a private message with the following info:

Name, address, account number, exact model of Samsung TV, make sure the TV has the latest firmware, is the XG1v4 connected directly to the TV or through an HDMI swith/AVR, confirm that you're using an HDMI 2.0 high speed cable that supports 4K/HDR (older spec cables won't work). Also, please provide a date and time when the issue last occured.

I'm working directly with the debug teams that are trying to replicate and debug the issue. The more details they have for timing of the last event, the better they can debug device logs.

Thanks.

ComcastLeon-

Are you still looking for examples? I've been having this issue since the day we started using the Xg1v4. I have spec cables, and have multiple 4K sources. The v4 is the only one with blue screen issues. K8500 Samsung as well.

I am also having this same issue so it doesn't seem that this is fixed. While another external device to negate the HDCP handshake may work, I dont feel like I should have to purchase this as I already pay a huge monthly bill.

Please put this issue into high gear or pull in addition resources. It's not an isolated issue.

Re: XG1v4 4k DVR no signal to TV blue screen

It’s not a power saver issue. I’ve had 3 boxes. (2) XG1v4(s) and power saver is disabled by default out of the box. It’s pretty obvious there is and HDCP handshake issue since an external converter seems to resolve the issue.

your TV is the sink and determines the shut down of the HD stream. if you are watching the set top box normally and power unplug the set top box does that trigger the problem? if it is 'acting up' did you use your TV remote to check current input port to ensure it is still on the one the DVR is connected? TV checked for firmware updates?

Re: XG1v4 4k DVR no signal to TV blue screen

1. Tv is a KS9000 and up to date with auto update on
2. This is my second XG1v4 with the same issue. The other older non 4K DVR had no issues.
3. All cables are certified and have been swapped to eliminate that as the issue.
4. It’s not an input issue.
5. I’ve been on the phone with techs from Comcast for 2 hours. No resolution.

If I unplug the box I will have no signal going to the TV? Not sure what you mean? This only happens when switching back to the DVR input after being on another input.

At this point if nobody from Comcast is willing to troubleshoot or the issue isn’t resolved in a timely manner, I will just cancel in August when my contract is up.

first go into your set top box menu to device settings >> power saver and be sure it is turned off. Then press the Xfinity button and scroll down to 'about' and press OK. check the version at the top "release version" - is it 86.1.0 or later dated 5/3/2018 or later? Some of the older versions had a similar issue. If all of those are set properly, then check your owner's manual for how to set up an HDMI port to not 'control' the device connected to that port. you may find that the port is hardwired to do that function, and have to move the box to another HDCP 2.2 port. It is your TV turning off the set top box. you can turn the box on by hitting the all power button of the remote. someone posted you can also hit the down channel button. let us know what you were able to determine, please.

Re: XG1v4 4k DVR no signal to TV blue screen

Power saver is off by default on these boxes but I double checked and it’s off.

86.1.0 with 5/3/18

I think by control you mean CEC. I’m not going to turn that off due to Comcast’s inability to make a box that works correctly. Plus if I turn off CEC on my TV I also turn off ARC. Again this all worked fine before switching to the 4K box.

When the blue screen is on there is no combination of button presses that make the box show a picture. The box is ON and shows lights and responds to remote presses via the light, but nothing changes with the blue screen.

There is no “All on” with the XR15 remote.

Re: XG1v4 4k DVR no signal to TV blue screen

I found the resolution which IS an HDCP issue.

The XG1v4 is only HDCP 2.2 and will not dumb down to 1.4. If you have newer 4K Samsung TV HDCP 2.2 is off by default. The inputs are all compliant but will not work with a HDCP 2.2 device out of the box.

To resolve this issue you need to go to:

Settings>Picture>Expert Settings>HDMI UHD Color

Turn “ON” the input your cable box is connected to. (Example HDMI 1 “On”) This will enable HDCP 2.2 and solve the issue of the blue screen when switching inputs.

This didn’t work for me.   Have had my Samsung set this way for months and still struggle with blue screen, black screen, and jittery screen.   After turning the TV off for a few minutes, then back on, the issue self corrects and works fine until the next time it’s off for any period of time.

Nope...it sure isn’t a loose connection.  It’s amazing to me that after all the customer comments in this thread, you keep going back to cabling.   You see, I too have spent hours on the phone and internet trying to figure out this COMCAST PROBLEM.   My account will show four visits from Comcast technical experts in my house, rewiring everything twice.   When will one of you just admit that COMCAST has an issue with SAMSUNG televisions?

Same issue with Samsung UN55HU9000 - 2014 model. No blue screen but I occasionally out no where get the black screen...if I channel up I get the jittery one. Only fix is to unseat the HDMI cord usually on the XG1v4-A as well as my One Connect box (Samsung bs for this model for HDMI connect as well as all connections). I have enabled my UHD Color setting as well and have my XG1v4-A connected to the HDMI in 1 (STB ).

It looks like the UHD option is not a long term solution.

I am expiencing the Blue Screen again when switching inputs back to the XG1v4 cable box. I can get the picture back by turning "UHD color" off/on again but that only work until the next time I switch inputs.

I have a TCL 4K tv and this is happening. I just got the new box and when i stop watching tv for a while this box goes down and my 2nd box loses its connection and I have to reset the main box by pulling the power chord and counting to 10. I’ll even check device status on my account app and the main box will have a grey dot and the secondary box had a red dot.

Yes. It then works for a short while and then when I come back to watch tv a couple hours later it’s doing it again. Last night I was using the box to watch Netflix and it just randomly rebooted for no reason. The settings don’t reboot the box till 4am, it was 11pm. After it rebooted it wouldn’t send signal to the tv and I had to do a system refresh just to get it back up. I’m regretting ordering this box!!! Never had any trouble with my cable till I got it.

Thanks, but I just unplugged the XG1v4-A and left it for a good minute and waited for it to come back online. Never had to do this with my last X1 box, miss the clock (as dumb as it sounds) as well. This new little box is also constantly hot. I'd requested all new equipment, and was told that was no problem. But figuring now either I have a used or defective box. I also had the XB6 Gateway added with my new gb service which has scratches all over the front so figuring that's definitely not new - sorry know that is off topic.

I actually have a old buddy from High school who is a senior tech with Comcast. He has been working very closely with me on the 4K box. He said they are still in Beta testing hence why you have to request the box.

We did discover that if you change the resolution on the box back to 1080p before leaving your TV sit for a while, that it doesn’t do the blank screen anymore when it turns on.

Re: XG1v4 4k DVR no signal to TV blue screen

Thanks Stevencs1043! I've stopped (knock on wood) having blue and black screen issues completely! I had shuffled some of my equipment and tried to remove the splitter - stupid I had to put all back together as the Comcast tech had correctly done in the first place ;p Assuming there may have been an update to the box from Xfinity to patch this?

In any case I seem to be issue free!! Just FYI as well: I have a curved 2014 Samsung "4K"
UHD (UN55HU9000) TV.

Good luck everyone!

You may already realize this; but the 4K DVR can not possibly pass a 4K signal when set to 1080p.

Not that it matters much since Comcast has next to nothing for 4K currently.
