What exactly does the "Regional Sports Fee" cover?

I'm in the Chicago area and I'm currently paying $19.20 a month for the "Regional Sports Fee".

Currently we cannot watch the Blackhawks, Bulls, or White Sox on Xfinity because CHSN isn't available.

The Cubs are on Marquee and I think it's in the $9.99 More Sports & Ent Pkg?

The Bears are on broadcast TV so I would think that should be included in the $25.65 Broadcast TV Fee.

What exactly does this cover?

user_kj102a Thanks for posting on our Forums. The Regional Sports Network Fee (RSN) is something that is listed as an itemized charge based on the cost to provide sports on multiple networks. There are additional TV packages to help customize the channel availability, but those fees would still apply to any lineups that would offer sports networks.

That's a non-answer.

You wrote, "The Regional Sports Network Fee (RSN) is something that is listed as an itemized charge based on the cost to provide sports on multiple networks."

In Chicago, which networks do you mean? What specifically does the $19.20 pay for?

user_0a4087, I don't have a way to tell you exactly what is included, however; the Regional Sports Fee does vary by region. Essentially it covers the regional sports networks in your area. Were there specific networks or other billing concerns I could help with?

What am I getting for Regional Sports Fee in Baltimore City, MD 21231?

@XfinityMarcos Xfinity doesn't have a deal with Chicago Sports Netswork. There is no regional sports being covered Xfinity. This is not a good business practicec

If Xfinity is not providing coverage for Regional Sports - Bulls, Blackhawks and Sox - will they be removing the Regional Sports Fee Charged monthly  subscribers?  Crazy to think they can charge for a service not provided

Exactly. Horrible business practice

Is Xfinity going to credit is subscribers in the Chicago market for the monthly Regional Sports Fee - There is no regional Sports coverage and it is insane that they continue t charge customers for a service not provided?  It should Las not be expected that consumers have t call in and request a credit for this fee!!!

[Edited: "Solicitation"]; honestly, I am so disappointed in Xfinity.  We had been loyal customers for decades.  Multiple decades.  Xfinity's lack of communication during the Chicago Regional Sports rollout was alarming.  I understand that Xfinity needed to meet and discuss before rolling out a plan for their customers; however, having us jump through hoops buying, assembling, and mounting antennas, etc, to watch Chicago sports, was deplorable on their part.

Xfinity, Please escalate this as users in Chicago are being charged for something that Xfinity cannot provide. Your response "charge based on the cost to provide sports on multiple networks. There are additional TV packages to help customize the channel availability, but those fees would still apply to any lineups that would offer sports networks." is not an answer. As the others have stated, what RSN channels are you proving for us to watch the local teams? Us as users need to stand together on this and demand refund since it ended.

Hi there, @user_1ygb63! The Regional Sports Fee is not an optional fee, so it is not able to be dropped. You can learn more about fees here: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/most-common-taxes-fees-surcharges-on-your-bill

Just drop the portion of the fee that goes for paying for CHSN and we’ll be happy.

How can Xfinity charge me a separate Regional Sports Fee and then require an additional "subscription fee" for me to watch my "regional sports teams" as the Warriors and the Forty-Niners???  I would expect to be allowed to drop the fee.  Xfinity fees appear to the the absolute highest of my options, so with this new REDUNDANT fee for regional sports, I will be looking for alternative services.  This change and subsequent additional charge because of a tier change is unacceptable!!!!

Xfinity pays programmers like networks, local TV station owners, regional sports network (RSN) owners and others for the ability to bring their content to customers, and this includes sports programming.

Xfinity regularly review this programming and sometimes makes changes to ensure customers receive a wide variety of content at the best value. A variety of factors are evaluated, including customer viewership and costs, when making these decisions. As a result, channels, including RSNs, may periodically be added, removed or moved to different packages.

RSNs and other programmers may also determine a channel may only be offered in certain geographic areas and can't be carried outside those areas. For more information on how Xfinity works to bring customers great content, see xfinity.com/howitworks.

@XfinityMartyR Xfinity is currently NOT providing any regional sports for Chicago. This is not a fair business practice

1 Message

Exactly.  There is no service being provided to Xfinity customers in the Chicago area as you no longer broadcast the Bulls, White Sox or Blackhawks.  The Cubs are on the Marquee network and the Bears are on cable channels.  What am I being charged $22.20 per month for (Regional Sports Fee)?  Comcast Sports Net has not been a channel for like 6 months now, yet I continue to be billed as if a service is being provided.   It should be eliminated until services are offered again.  Even if I'm getting a refund later, all that equates to is the customers giving Xfinity a 0% interest loan.  We should get interest back with the refund.

Typical evasive answer that often results in a class action lawsuit.  If you charge a regional sports fee, you should be able to tell us exactly what channels the fee pays for.  If you cannot tell us, then I suspect it is another name for pure profit.  How about you stop the evasive answers and tell us exactly what the regional sports fee pays for in the Chicago area since you decided not to use the regional sports fee to pay for CHSN.  It is not too much to ask.

This seems to be a bogus charge. If I watch the NFL on an ota network, like CBS, which I already pay for with my basic cable, why do I need to pay for it again?

Explain it to me like I am 5 years old. Because the explanations here do not make sense.

Hello, @Michael_1369

If an RSN fee is removed from a customer’s lineup or moved to different package than the one they're currently subscribed to, the customer may see a reduction in their RSN fee. More than one RSN fee may be available in a market, and may still apply if the current package includes an RSN fee. If a customer’s current package doesn't include an RSN fee, they won't be charged an RSN fee.  Please refer to xfinity.com/howitworks for an overview of why there may have been a change to the package in which an RSN is offered or if has been removed from the lineup. If an RSN moves to a different package or service level, the customer will receive an email and see a message on their monthly bill statement.

This is not a government mandated fee. Xfinity is wrongly charging Chicago for sports they are not providing.

It's an unfair business practice. Plus, it doesn't look like they will be resolving their issues with CSN anytime soon

Hello, @brim1 Xfinity’s network carriage costs, primarily regional sports network programming costs, are subject to change due to several factors including new contract negotiations, contractual rate changes and ownership changes. To avoid frequent changes in monthly recurring charges, Xfinity determines the monthly charge for the RSN Fee annually based upon the carriage costs that the company anticipates will be incurred on a per-subscriber basis in the upcoming year.

Went to speak to an actual person at the xfinity store about the regional sports fee, since we no longer get regional sports (Warriors). Was told it will still be charged because we get espn. So, $19 a month for espn, which is a channel included on the regular lineup! Asked about the email stating we would get a one time credit and removal of the fee and he said it was probably a fraudulent e mail! Lol, is this what you are telling your staff to say. The sports fee is not charged on the most basic service, so you can't say it can't be taken off. Being charged for a service you no longer provide is fraud and not acceptable.

I completely understand your frustration, and I want to clarify the Regional Sports Fee to make sure you have the correct information.

The Regional Sports Fee is not just for ESPN—it covers the costs of multiple regional sports networks (RSNs) that carry local sports programming, including teams from your area. This fee helps cover the broadcast rights fees that networks charge to air live regional games. It is separate from ESPN, which is included in your regular channel lineup.

I also want to apologize for the incorrect information you were given at the Xfinity store. You should never be told an email from us is fraudulent—we’ve communicated with eligible customers regarding credits and changes to the fee where applicable.

We never want you to feel like you’re paying for something you’re not receiving, so if regional sports channels are no longer available in your area, we’d be happy to review your account and see what adjustments or options may be available to you. Let us know if you'd like us to take a closer look!

@XfinityAirelle so in your reply you stated that the Regional Sports Fee "is not just for ESPN"  but ESPN is NOT a RSN.  We are in the general DC area and our RSN (MASN) was removed last year from our package. We got a one time credit, even though when I called in and spoke to a rep she said the fee would be removed ongoing.  When we then went in to a store to find out why that had not occurred, we got the same reply as another poster "Well, you still get sports."  If the Regional Sports Fee is truly linked to the cost of providing the particular sports networks in an area, then the sports fee should have at least been reduced by the amount that is specific to our RSN (MASN).  This has been a scam from the beginning. Not only do I not get to watch my team, but I have to pay a share so that other people can watch them.

Hopefully they’ll give us the $8+ credit on our bill’s again this month in the Chicago area.

5 Messages

@hwkn so, with the $8 credit, how much is your fee? That would bring mine down to $11, which is still unacceptable since we don't get the channels.  Xfinitys response above is confusing.  Are they saying because ABC and TNT sometimes have sports on, that's what we are paying for? Seems a stretch to me. I'm waiting until next months bill then I'm canceling if they can't get this figured out and stop overcharging people.

My fee would be $11.40 which doesn’t sound too bad imho.(still paying for the Marquee channel)
