Re: Not all HD channels giving me 5.1 surround sound

I have the same issue and noticed it watching SNL.  The musical acts on SNL have sounded terrible for a good while now and last night I decided to dig into it.  I have to imagine it is something to do with SNL's mix, but it would be interesting to see if the same issue occurs over the air - unfortunatley I cannot test that.

Clearly my equipment is working OK - I can play a music video from MTV and hear the center channel and I can hear the center channel on SNL right up until the musical act starts; then no center channel and the band sounds terrible.  Even on the closing of the show, I can clearly hear the SNL Band's bass guitar in the center channel (but nothing else - why not the sax?).  I'm beginning to think this is an SNL issue because I have not noticed it on other shows.

To be clear - the center channel is fine on SNL right up until the musical act starts playing, and then it is fine again after the performance ends.

My setup is TiVo/cablecard HDMI into a Marantz 7703/8077 setup and the TiVo is setup to output Dolby Surround.

Normally this setup works fine and it may be only on SNL during the musical act where the center channel is gone.  I'll need to start paying more attention but it is so noticeble that it would be hard to miss.

OK, I can hear the hi-hat in the center channel of Machine Gun Kelly's performance, but nothing else.  It's like a soloed hi-hat, similar to the SNL Band's bass guitar at the end.  This is just SNL making a mess of the music mixes as far as I can tell.

If you can watch SNL over the air using an antenna, you can rule out the Comcast equipment if you see the same problem there too.

I can get over 55 channels using an antenna in my service area. OTA gives a better video signal for channels suppling 1080i. I use Sony 5.1 SS connected directly to my Samsung 3D 4K Curved 65 inch television.
