Coda56 firmware update

I bought a Coda56 since it was on the approved and recommended list. I hooked it up and it seems to be working okay. The problem is I can not access the GUI. I followed the instructions: laptop connected via Ethernet and configured with a STATIC IP  set to the 192.168.100.x.

I can ping the modem 192.168.100.1, but I can not access the GUI. I found this article on the Hitron website:

The ability to access Hitron’s CODA56 GUI requires firmware version 7.3.5.0.1b2 or higher.  This firmware is only available from your ISP, since the upgrading of all cable modems is governed by DOCSIS standards, which mandate that the distribution of firmware updates lies with the Service Provider.

This firmware is currently available for Comcast, Charter, and Cox Subscribers.

My Question is since I can not access the GUI how do I know what firmware version I have and how will I know if you push it to my modem.

XfinityEmilyB was able to confirm may firmware version is 7.2.4.7.1b2 and Hiltron says you need a minimum version of 7.3.5.0.1b2 before you are able to access the GUI. The advanced repair team is supposed to be pushing the updated firmware to my modem and hopefully it will work after that.

They have to be sure the firwmare will not cause new issues etc and when they push it there will be probably thousands of other CODA modems that get updated.

They also need to make sure the firmware is compatible with the CMTS (at the headend that the modems all talk to) and will not have issues.  Could take some time.

If you want a modem that will allow you to see everything w/ the GUI I've always been a fan of Arris Surfboards -- SB8200 is Docsis 3.1 and if you want one that does the mid split support they have been upgrading in many places (we have it here in central Massachusetts) the Arris S34 does this.  Just installed an S34 for a friend yesterday and the GUI for status works well.  Getting solid 1.2 Gbps x 40 Mbps upstream currently.

Good luck!

Thank you for your explanation malk315. They've been pushing the firmware over a year now. If you check the beginning of my post, Hitron’s CODA56 GUI requires firmware version 7.3.5.0.1b2 or higher and Xfinity is actually using 7.3.5.0.1b5.  Xfinity confirmed my firmware version is 7.2.4.7.1b2, but for some reason they don't seem to be able update it as only the ISP can. I bought this modem because it's on the Xfinity list of approved and recommended. I also have an S33 and it works fine but it don't do the higher upload speeds. I'm only posting because I was ask to post once I got the firmware up to see if it resolved my issue. I was just commenting it hasn't been updated yet.

Just my opinion, but I will never buy another Hitron modem. As I said I bought it because it was on the Xfinity approved and recommended list, and because it was cheaper of course. I'm sure they are probably okay but I've always had Arris and had good luck with them.

@user_a9365 Interesting your firmware is behind being Xfinity standarizes on 7.3.5.x firmware...  You say only the ISP can update it -- Xfinity in this case is the ISP and all it really means is that firmware updates can only be done from the HFC side (Hybrid Fiber Cable) on the cable wire coming and not on the CPE (customer premise equipment) side which is the ethernet port on the modem.  It really is too bad the modem vendors can't put something on the ethernet side to allow firmware updates but DOCSIS for which all of the cable ISPs utilize seems to mandate control of the firmware from the HFC side.  When I put in the S34 yesterday, 2 reboots for firmware updates to get it where Xfinity wants it.

I will never buy a hitron modem either -- had a bad experience at sandwich shop I did the network and point of sale for and the ISP Spectrum (Worcester, MA) requires their modem hi-tron.  No GUI support and defaults to "router" mode and the only way to get bridge mode was to call the ISP and whine about switching...  ouch.  At least Comcast/Xfinity w/ their gateway you can login and go for bridge mode and it automatically turns off the wifi and such.  My only thing I'm not a fan of that is the RF usually still is active even with the wifi off...  also many time xfinity will broadcast their xfinity wifi SSIDs on their equipment thus the only way to really avoid that is to use your own modem.  At least they seem to support using your own modem.

I can confirm the S34 is good for mid split upgrades which we have here -- leads to rather fast upstreams like over 100 Megabit and such.  That's great for like remote viewing camera systems and things... I've always hated cable setups w/ slower upstream and really like fiber w/ symmetrical setups.  We have a few Comcast metro ethernet setups and it's pure fiber to your CPE and symmetrical and very low latency...  like really good stuff doesn't have to be just FIOS to get fiber -- Comcast metro ethernet (business only and w/ a service level agreement so expensive but impressive) is a really nice setup for a business.

Hope you can get your modem GUI working eventually!   Worst case put the hitron on Ebay and grab an S34 from Arris if you want current DOCSIS 3.1 and future mid split support.

I have for my home a rack mount Ubiquiti UCI (Unifi Cable Internet) that is DOCSIS 3.1 compliant and I get 1400 x 42 on my provisioned 1200 x 40 service.  I wanted a real 19" rack mount modem and the UCI delivered (a bit pricey, but I'm a rack mount snob I guess!).  The cool thing about the UCI is that its planned for a firmware update later to get to DOCSIS 4.0 which I'm assuming would support the mid split stuff they did to get the crazy high bandwidths.

Cheers.

The rest of the story. I was on the 500m plan using an Arris SBG8300 and was very happy. Xfinity told me my bill was going up $40 or they would double my speed for the same price I was paying. So I said sure double my speed and I think the SBG8300 would have worked at 1000m but they actually gave my the 1100m plan. So a few days later they sent an email saying my modem was no longer going to work I needed to replace it. I bought an Arris S33 and it was working good. Then I got an email saying we are getting a speed increase but my S33 wouldn't handle it. Long story short the speed increase was from 20m to 35m upload speed which the S33 handles fine. I assumed we were getting the 100m or whatever they have so that was my fault for not checking more. So now I have 4 modems because I had an SB8200 before the SBG8300 and 3 routers and a huge headache. 6 weeks ago I was very happy I guess I should have just paid the extra $40 a month or rented their modem which I think they prefer anyway. That's my story.

Between Hitron and Xfinity they determined the modem was bad. Hitron is going to send a replacement modem so once I receive it I will be able to see if I can access the GUI.

Following up I received my replacement modem from Hitron. I hooked it up, it downloaded the correct firmware (7.3.5.0.1b5) and I'm now able to access the GUI.
