Why is LIVE TV delayed 45 seconds?

I know this problem is heavily complained about and have no real answer, but I wanted to make sure my issue was recorded when there is hopefully some sort of lawsuit.

Why is the live broadcast on my cable box 45 seconds behind the Xfinity Stream app? And 1 minute behind ESPN live score updates? Friends watching games via streaming services text me game updates before I see the plays occur on my cable box.

  • Xfinity is literally running a commercial during every football game this year about how their internet is so good that their streams aren't delayed
  • This occurs on almost every channel. Some are more delayed than others. Local channels are affected the most. Fox right now is 45 seconds behind the Stream app
  • Xfinity Box: XG1v4-A
  • For comparison, I am streaming the game at the same time on my Apple TV 4k via Xfinity Stream. I am 45 seconds behind.
  • I have changed out the HDMI cables, both HDMI 2.1 and HDMI 2.0 versions. I have tried different HDMI inputs on my TV
  • I have done multiple system refreshes
  • This has been happening for 2-3 years w/ 2 separate Xfinity boxes. It has recently gotten worse though.

Is there anything I can do locally until Xfinity maybe improves their connection between the channels and their customers?

I noticed that this started for me sometime earlier this year. I now have to put my phone on do not disturb during live events or use the Xfinity app. I’ve had the same hardware for several years and the wiring is new. Hopefully this is something that they will fix.

I just switched to Xfinity tv since they were half the price that Directv was going to be. I have had the problem since day 1. Technicians say there is no problem. So do the Xfinity employees on here. Nothing is going to get fixed.

user_d224a2, We appreciate you choosing us to be your Cable TV provider. I hate to hear that this has been ongoing since day 1 on your end. Just to confirm, is this happening on specific content, or across the board?

I just had a technician come out for this exact problem. He didn’t do anything and told me that it’s completely normal for the stream app and ESPN app to be ahead of LIVE CABLE (!!!!). Absolutely absurd and I will be canceling my service immediately

It’s time to drop Xfinity Comcast cable they charge way too much we pay for the sports and entertainment package etc. and we still can’t watch all NFL games on the TV. I have more Spanish Latino stations that are FREE! Than I have regular stations in English. It’s time to just get rid of those account!!

@user_m7u9od - unless you have both YouTube TV and Amazon Prime, you won't be able to watch "all NFL games" anywhere, and there's nothing Comcast can do about it.

Experiencing these delays has caused me to go to CBS Sports Scores for real-time updates or using the Scores app on my phone.  I will be looking to cut off Xfinity cable very soon.  No sense in having TV if I can't watch sports in real-time.

The HD channels are behind the stream app, however non-HD channels are ahead of the stream app, and are in line with my friends who have other providers

Still having issues on my end. Been several weeks. I'm this close to cancelling and switching to YTTV. Peacock is 30 seconds ahead of my cable feed for Sunday night football. Unacceptable that Xfinity is not acknowledging this is a problem. We pay too much to be behind streaming.

Have you tried a non-HD broadcast? I bet it won’t be delayed

@Justnobody2124 That's still a dealbreaker. It's 2023. I'm not watching anything in SD.

I agree, I think it has too do with decompressing the HD feeds.  I didn’t have this issue a year ago. So I doubt it’s a setting on our end that can be changed.

Hi there, @mnsportsgeek! We want you to get the game action the second that it happens and apologize you have been seeing a 30-second delay. Are you only noticing this on the NFL games or with other sports events as well? Have you tried a system refresh signal? That will reset the connection to our systems and can sometimes help when you notice a delay.

@XfinityRay - I am seeing it on multiple channels. Pretty much every one at the moment. How do I do a system refresh signal?

I have been thinking about this since the first time I saw the commercial. Definitely false advertisement. I would not be surprised if there’s a class action filed because this is ridiculous.

I did some experiments comparing my xg1v4 box to the Xfinity stream app on my iPhone.

Channels Where Streaming is Ahead of my X1 Box:

NBC

CBS

FOX

TNT

Channels where X1 is ahead:

ESPN

ESPN2

And even on ESPN channels X1 is only about 7 seconds ahead of streaming. It should be 30+ seconds.

My contract ends in January. YouTube TV is calling my name.

I've been having this problem the last few months as well.  Same as described by the posts above and we even noticed that when we fast forward on our recordings the auto stop doesn't work.  We have to manual fast forward almost a minute after it stops itself. There should be no excuse for this happening for so long and to do many people.

@Dbharr exactly i use DVR to skip commercials, not play the last minute of commercials. Comcast just gets worse and doesn't care about the customer. Just money hungry

@Dbharr - I have the same problem with the auto fast forward, and I think I know why; I think the "stop point" is the point that shows up in the fast forward at 4x just before the show restarts (in other words, either it stops there, or it stops after the show restarts), and nobody can figure out a way to handle it for different fast forward speeds.

Been having the same issue as everyone else here. I can’t see it being retransmission issues or any of these reasons being given, because it wasn’t always like this. I’ve had Comcast forever and continue to pay more and more every year. This past seasons Phillies playoff run and NFL season have put me over the edge. Just as many here have tested. I’ve compared cable, streaming app, HD antenna, superbox, you name it I’ve tested it. The only reason I’ve stuck with Comcast through the years is to watch live sports. Now my phone is getting the updates faster and there’s clearly a lack of accountability from Comcast I’m out after this NFL season. Right now watching the eagles game on cbs my HD antenna, 30 dollars from Walmart, is between 30 and 45 seconds ahead of my xfinity box and 15-30 seconds ahead of the finite streaming app. Terrible

I have experienced this all football season as well. I called xfinity about 3 weeks ago to fix it. They sent me a new box and told me I would not be charged any shipping. The new box came and was the wrong box so I went to the store to return it. He ordered a new one and said to keep that for my 2nd cable box would need to be switched. I switched both boxes and nothing was changed. I planned to return both old boxes to them and let them know but before that they added the additional boxes to my upcoming bill as well as another charge for having them. So they are trying to charge me an extra $55 for their services being terrible.

I called today to dispute these charges. The guy was just going to give me a discount for a month and send me another new box which I didn't want to deal with. I just want better services. After deciding I am better off returning everything to get the bill fixed, the guy hung up on me. Then, 3 minutes later my next bill (due in Dec) was charged the full amount as well as 3 additional charges of 210, 220.50, and 300 for no reason. It took me about 30 minutes of waiting on hold and they are looking into it.

So in review, their services are worse, they are charging more, they apparently can put through charges, and they do nothing to make it any better. Nothing got resolved from my call today so I will have to go to the store or call again to fix the simple issues that only came about because of their incompetence.

Also had this issue yesterday watching Eagles - 49ers game on FOX HD ch 805 with Comcast of Garden State NJ system. Was talking to parents on phone and who live in Philly and I can hear the play finished on their TV and then the play happened on my TV maybe 45 seconds to 1 minute later. Basically they New about a touchdown before I saw it happen. Any fix for this Live TV issue.

@tstacks I can understand how this would be frustrating, there is a delay when watching sports though. Reviewing this thread it looks like users have reported that the delay is less when watching sports in SD. At this time we do not have a resolution for the delay you see when watching sports since the networks themselves delay live broadcasts.

Xfinity Billy, At least you are honest and admit there is a problem with no solution. I am always puzzled

when there must be hundreds of these delay posts and yet the Xfinity employee treats it like it is an individual problem

that can be fixed by them if you send a direct message.

Completely unacceptable.  It has been going on all year with NFL games and MLB games. 30-45 second delay. Have to turn off phone bc of spoilers.

Same thing for me, X8 router is running 1400mbs, so not a connection problem. Brand new X1 V4 is way behind my other tv streaming through the firestick. Big plays are ruined by texts coming in before I get to see them. Or a big Thanksgiving cheer from the other room while I was cooking and watching the X1.

Hey there @user_589wxp So sorry to hear this happened over the holiday. We are actively engaging with the major networks regarding HD decompression during live broadcasts so that this is a seamless experience for you moving forward.  While watching in SD isn't ideal it is alleviating these issue right now.

@jackreed05 - Hello and thank you for choosing Xfinity! As a quick reminder, you can troubleshoot your TV services quickly and easily using the Xfinity app. It works great and can help with many common issues. Broadcast delays happen to prevent mistakes or unacceptable content from being broadcast. While it can be frustrating; it is not uncommon to have delays.
