Upgrade for 4K?

My DVR says XG1-A on the front.  The XFINITY site says to get 4K requires an XG1v4 or an Xi6.

Can I bring my box in for an exchange to a 4K-capable box?

If I do, can they copy my saved DVR content to the new device for me?

Thanks!

If your nearest service center is convenient for you it may be possible. The "catch" is the center might not have the XG1v4 DVR in stock. Some people have been told there is stock to find out they did not have one. The new DVR's store in the "cloud" (no physical hard disk). So only 30 hours of your old disk can be transferred to it.

The way @MNtundraRET described it is kind of correct. You absolutely can check at your local service center for availability. Actually the last 60 hours are stored in the cloud. Those 60 hours are accessible through the new dvr (and mobile app and Xfinity Stream website), not transferred to it. As new recordings are made, the oldest of the 60 hours will drop off.

Are you saying the last 60 hours are already stored in the cloud?  Instead of locally on my older DVR?  Or are available both locally and in the cloud?  Or maybe you mean that the last 60 will be uploaded to the cloud.  Sorry that I am a bit confused.

I suspect that I have well over 60 hours recorded at the moment.  Certainly before I brought the old box in I would do a lot of cleanup, keep only what really matters.

Thanks again.

They are recorded simultaneously on the hard drive and the cloud. The cloud only stores the last 60 recorded. It really doesn’t matter what you want to save because as soon as you record on the new dvr, those recordings will slowly replace the ones in the cloud. It’s really about what you should watch before you turn in your present dvr. You can use the Xfinity stream app to see what’s in the cloud.

it appears that in some areas (perhaps all by now) new customers do not get/use home set top box DVRs (like the Xg1). It appears the move is now to use regular set top boxes (at $5/month) or let customer use their own devices. it also appears that at least one x1 (formerly called companion now just HD) set top box can have 5 streaming devices (TVs, Roku, etc) at one time. without a set top box limit is 2 streaming devices working at the same time. the Cloud DVR (the DVR for new customers) comes in different numbers of hours depending on the service or service level. it is still something that Comcast appears to be implementing.

All very interesting.  I am sort of getting that there is a change going on from cable-as-I've-known-it to some sort of streaming version of cable.  Since cable and internet are coming in on the same coax then split to the two boxes I guess I should not be surprised.

I have a new Roku Ultra, which has a beta app for Comcast/xFinity.  I tried it, very briefly.  I went right back to my XG1-A.  Some of that might have been familiarity, but I was not impressed with the beta software on the Roku.
