DVR Recordings Deleted

Xfinity continues to do things to aggravate me, the latest nugget of joy being having older recordings I keep on my DVR deleted automatically - when I am PAYING FOR STORAGE. I went to watch something I recorded in 2022 on MY cable box (again, with storage I pay for) only to find the program (and several others) was gone. I Googled to see why my older recordings were gone only to find out that NOW Xfinity only keeps recordings for ONE YEAR and then deletes them. This is ludicrous. If I am paying for storage, and the recordings capacity isn't even above 70%, WHY IS THE BOX DELETING RECORDINGS??? Honestly, I no longer even pretend to understand how Xfinity makes these decisions - especially when there's literally no reason for older recordings to be deleted when the box isn't even close to being full to capacity. It's unbelievable how shabbily customers are treated. Once again I have been nudged ever so closer to cutting the cord.

Hey @PeteRFNY,

Thank you for reaching out through our Xfinity Community Forums support page. Please accept my most sincere apology for the experience you have encountered. Depending on your storage settings, some recordings can be deleted. We highly recommend visiting our 'X1 Cloud DVR FAQs' support page which goes over the X1 Cloud DVR features and settings. Please let us know if there is any further clarification that we can provide. We are always avaiable and happy to help.

@XfinityDemitrius I have read the FAQs and it says on the info there:

What save options do I have for recordings?

  • Save Until Space Is Needed: Most recent recordings will replace older recordings.
  • Save for 1 Year: All cloud DVR recordings will delete after one year. Future recordings will not record unless you manually delete some older recordings.

And yet when I go to record something now, the ONLY options I have are "Until Space Is Needed (Up To One Year)" or "Up To One Year". So no matter WHICH option you choose, I'm STILL going to lose my recordings after ONE YEAR, even though part of the service I am paying for INCLUDES DVR storage. If this is what "cloud" storage means I'd rather go back to saving programs locally ON THE BOX. At least then recordings I saved FOR A REASON will still be there when I try to watch them three years (or whenever) from now.

I am failing to see the logic behind why recordings are now being deleted after one year. I always try and keep the recordings below 70% SPECIFICALLY so I wouldn't lose older recordings that were important to me and are now, sadly, gone and irreplaceable. But this is the sort of thing I have unfortunately come to expect these days, ever since the day I went to watch a movie on TCM (which was included in the package I originally signed up for) and found I needed to now upgrade to a higher package full of stuff I have zero interest in to see the channel. It would be funny if it wasn't so ridiculous.

I work in the broadcasting industry and I cannot come up with one single logical reason why programs "need" to be deleted after one year, especially if storage is kept under 75% full. Yes, I am upset about this because again it is something that adds zero value to my service (in fact, it takes AWAY from my service) and keeps me feeling like I am in abusive relationship with my cable company, which is pitiful. At the very least, there should be a lower (or no) DVR service charge if you're not even going to be allowed to keep your own recordings. On the DVR. That you are PAYING for.

@XfinityThomasC Yeah no everything is gone. Unless YOU can restore by programs from prior to 9/1/22 I'm very not satisfied with this new policy. The fact that I cannot keep my OWN recordings longer than one year is completely unacceptable.

Oh, no! I would definitely feel the same way if I had important recordings that I wanted to keep, @PeteRFNY. Just to confirm there are no recordings appearing in the recently deleted folder? This is definitely not the experience we like to hear about. Here is a great link to our feedback section to make sure your feedback is heard.

Been happening to me for years. And it's just random ones. I still have recording from 2019 and 2020 but much more recent ones just vanish without a trace. Have literally lost at least a hundred over the years. My theory is if the show or movie you recorded disappears from on demand it vanishes from your saved recordings. Had all 3 Godfather movies recorded and they are long gone. 4 part docs. on Ali and the '86 Mets all gone too. Been a thousand posts about it and nothing has changed so I guess we have to live with it

@skintime It just sucks because we pay elevated fees for cable and you can't even keep your own recordings which is just ridiculous. They deleted all of the coverage my wife recorded when Queen Elizabeth died (she's into the royal family stuff) - thankfully I was able to find a lot of the footage online so I was able to recover most of it on my own - still extremely aggravating how little they care about the needs of the end user.

@skintime @PeteRFNY We understand the importance of being able to keep all the recordings you love, and know it can be frustrating when ones you want to keep are deleted. At this time, there is only an option to store recordings on your DVR box for up to one year. When something new is being recorded, and you are low on space, then your older recordings will start to be deleted to make room for new ones. If you have your recordings marked as "Save for 1 Year" then those recordings won't be deleted to make room for new ones, but will be deleted after 1 year. Any recordings set to "Save until space is needed" will be deleted to make room for new recordings when needed, starting with the oldest recording available. More information regarding storage and deleting recordings on the physical box itself can be found on our X1 DVR Service Overview page.

While I understand this storage limit may not be ideal, we do value your feedback and input. I do encourage you to submit your feedback on this using the survey link provided in Gabriel's message above as this is the best way to ensure your feedback is submitted and help work towards a possible change in this process.

"Not Ideal" isn't exactly what I'd call it, but this is a family forum.

I agree. Same thing happened to us. Had some older recordings we really wanted to keep, some of which we did not have a chance to watch until now and they are completely gone! Plenty of storage capacity and got rid of some more current recordings to be able to keep the older recordings. Why not ask customers first? Or is the customer's feedback no longer important? Are you listening Xfinity? Some of the reasons we have stayed with you for so long are quickly evaporating. There are plenty of other TV viewing options at a much lower cost without the aggravations.

My issue was the same.  I had a sentimental recording from 5/13/22 that disappeared since when they swapped boxes a few weeks ago it did not transfer.  When I took the “new” box home the memory was full, so the reason my recording disappeared.  The extra recordings for from another area and this should not have happened

This happened to me as well and I’m so annoyed. We pay so much for xfinity and I’m not happy with how they’ve been changing things. We had a plan specifically for Starz and they cut that out of our plan and now deleting our DVR recordings that we pay storage for. They obviously don’t want to keep customers.

Just had another favorite film deleted from my DVR.  What's with this?  Shabby treatment by Xfinity toward its supposedly 'valuable' customer!  Why a one-year cut-off?  What's the logic?  What's the hurry?  I RARELY use over 25% of my recording capacity, and take pains to delete most recordings after use.  This ONE, PARTICULAR movie rarely shows up on my services, so it takes a long time to find another opportunity to record it.  This policy is unfair, unreasonable and extremely annoying and exasperating.  Any reasonable answers from Xfinity?

I had saved one recording of one 1-hr show from 6 months ago, and I noticed today it is gone. I now have no recordings and nothing in Deleted. There was plenty of available space and it hadn’t been a year. What excuse now?! Never mind. I see this has been an issue for 3 years and Xfinity hasn’t changed except for their prices.

I have been losing recordings without deleting or using up storage. It always happens after the nightly update. Long time customer. Please help or I'm gone.

Hello and welcome to Comcast @user_90j9ey.  I am sorry to hear that your DVR recordings have been disappearing after the updates. I recently experience the same issue so I understand how frustrating this is.I was able to get my DVR recordings back, just by rebooting the DVR box manually. Have you tried to reboot the DVR box manually?

This is our first year using the Cloud DVR.  I suspect I didn't read things carefully because I too just experienced recordings getting deleted after apparently one year.  One of those things was a Christmas movie that we happened to want to see each year at Christmas.  I agree completely with the posts that talk about if you are paying for the space (300 hours in our case), recordings shouldn't be deleted after one year.  I certainly hope Xfinity takes these posts seriously and makes some changes to this policy.  Otherwise it may be time to go back to a physical box again such as a TiVo.
