In my testing, the 2 channel issue only happens when the original source material is 2.0. I observed it on MLB Extra Innings baseball games that are 2.0. Also saw it on old programs. Seems like the Xi6 is converting everything to 5.1 PCM regardless of what's in the channels.
I'm looking at the Indiana game in 4K right now. In Auto, I get Atmos/PCM. In Expert, my Xi6 outputs it as 5.1 PCM in a Dolby MAT envelope. When i switch to the regular Fox HD channel, it's DD+ 5.1 in Expert.

They, of course, have access to an Xi6 and can see what it does. And there must be technical specs.

That list matches what my Xi6 outputs, too. I would add that on Auto, everything is Dolby MAT, not standard MultiCh In 5.1 PCM. Music Choice and old programs like Andy Giffith on MeTV arrive from the Xi6 as 5.1, but only have sound in the L/R channels. You can get sound to other speakers using MultiCh Stereo but not regular upmixers like Dolby Surround since the arriving source is flagged as already being 5.1.
On Expert, we differ slightly on 4K sources. My Xi6 outputs standard 5.1 PCM, not MAT, but the only sound is in the L/R channels, essentially acting like 2.0 which can't be upmixed. Also, I get a DD+ 2.0 input on MeTV, which plays all those old TV shows. It acts the same as Music Choice.

s he has an Atmos capable Yamaha AVR configured in 5.1 without height speakers.

Sundance is a channel that sends DD+ 5.1. It upmixes stereo source content itself so that there's sound in the center and surround channels. MeTV does DD+ 2.0 and the AVR has to upmix, which it can do correctly in Expert. But, in Auto, the Xi6 converts the original track to Dolby MAT 5.1 PCM without upmixing and you get a 5.1 transmission with the only sound in the L/R channels.

And I haven’t even gotten into asking why when watching apps through my Roku streaming device, programs in 4k output BT 2020 HDR color but when I watch the same program on an app through the Xfinity box, it doesn’t. In fact, my recollection is that even Xfinity‘s 4K channels don’t output in HDR using this box. But I’m not going to go through all of this again just to find out an answer. 🤷♂️😂

Yeah, frustrating, altho this seems to be an unusual situation where something was changed for the World Cup that sort of broke audio processing on the Xi6 and the support people don't know about it.
At any rate, it seems pretty clear that it is not possible to use a single audio setting on the Xi6 - Auto or Expert - that works for everything. Auto is the only way to get Atmos on 4K channels. But, Auto means surround sound from regular HD channels arrives as 5.1 PCM Dolby MAT with the only actual sound in the L/R channels. Unless support has a fix, I'll be staying with my XG1v4 box which works correctly in both Auto and Expert, no need to do any switching depending on the type of program.

In Auto on HD channels, I get a Dolby MAT 5.1 PCM input with sound only in the L/R channels. Can't upmix because the source is already 5.1. The only way I get sound in the center and surrounds is with a multichannel stereo sound mode, which is not real surround.
If you actually get sound from the Xi6 on all the channels, then Auto will work for you. But, it would be unusual for two Xi6 boxes to differ like that.

Dunno. The problem I see has been reported by a number of people with Xi6 boxes on reddit and AVS Forums. My power went out a little while ago. I'll check again later.

Power is back and when i checked again, yes, I am also getting 5.1 with sound in all the channels on HD content when set to Auto. The only time 2.0 is trapped in a 5.1 container is with actual stereo sources like Music Choice and MeTV. That's not nearly so bad. Still not great for me, tho, as i have packages like MLB Extra Innings that originate in stereo.
