Xfinity/Target promotion scam
I am embarrassed to say that I fell for this scam. The telephone number I called had an xFinity recording so it sounded legit. More concerning is how the scammers zeroed out the balance on my Xfinity app. And now I have a credit of $300. So unless the acct payment and credit are bogus, we’ve been able to recover some of our money. Scary how they accessed our account.

I just got a call yesterday (November 12, 2022) about this Target Gift card promotion. They called and said I could get my bill cut in half if I paid for 2 years up front. They knew my monthly fee and my current balance. The "deal" was to go purchase a $500 Target gift card and put my 2 year prepayment on the gift card and to call the 800 number and pay it off within 3 days. Or if I could do this in 2 hours, they would take another $25 off my balance for fast action. The caller stated that it was a promotion with Target Retail store helping Xfinity customers. (Really?? That was what gave it away) They sent me a text message saying my November balance was paid up. The caller was foreign and was very pushy. I called their 800 # and it was an Xfinity billing department, [Edited: "Personal Information"] or so it seemed. I went online to my xfinity account and my balance was still there. Then I looked up this forum to confirm it was a scam. Now, what can we do to the scammers? Any ideas?

Its a scam and they are good! After a few minutes they knew my name, my balance and past due amount? They got my phone number when I called them, then I gave them my billing zip. I assume they spoofed my number and called Xfinity. Xfinity's system speaks your name when you call from your primary number. With the zip, they can access balance and past due balance. Then they paid my balance using a fake credit card I guess because my balance went to zero? At least until the card is rejected.
I will call Xfinity later, when I have 3 hours to sit on hold and talk to 6 different departments. I wished these guys were honest and worked for Xfinity.

I reported our case to FTC and Xfinity's Customer Security Assurance who both opened cases. These criminals/scammers had the audacity to call back stating if didn't call to make a payment we would be charged. They called from [Edited: "Personal Information". I hope they are caught soon. It's scary that they have that much account information from Xfinity.

To update, the $300 credit was from MY CREDIT CARD on file for auto pay. So we are out all of the money. I just don’t understand how they were allowed to take over my account and access the credit card in file. I told the credit card company to reverse the payment. So instead of using our auto pay, Xfinity hit me with a late payment fee. I managed to get that reversed, after spending a lot of time getting through Xfinity’s infuriating voicemail maze.

They KNEW the last 4 digits of my account number, and sounded legit at first. They said to get 50% my bill, to buy a prepaid Target gift card, put money for the next 7 months of my bill on it then call
this fake Xfinity number [Edited: "Personal Information"] to pay them with the prepaid card. (They called from [Edited: "Personal Information"]) And they sent me a text with fake billing info, like they had refunded they payment from my last bill. AND this text thread was started DAYS before they tried to scam me. And the text thread started WHILE I had been on the phone with an Xfinity rep about a completely different issue. Which suggests to me, the scam is being run by some employees at Xfinity.

I can’t believe I fell for this scam. Like the others they call you and text acting like Xfinity. Like the others they zero out your account and they say they’ll pay off your bill for the year if you pay up front using the Target GC. They say they’ll give you a $500 visa gift card too. They scammed me for $3000. I can’t believe I fell for this.

This just happened to me. They use an xfinity recording, number comes up as Comcast calling. & they tried to get me to pay $700. Said they were being sponsored by target. Target would pay my next monthly bill. I refused & then he got angry at me. Said he’s gonna cancel my account. He has my mane, address, phone, & Acct number.

Don't be embarrassed, I almost fell for this scam. They are so evil! when you call the number they give you it actually answers with "thank you for calling Xfinity". They sound so legit as they are using Xfinity to answering message when they put you on hold. I don't think anyone can do anything about it to stop them as they offshore. I called Xfinity and filed a report.

This issue is inexcusable for Xfinity not putting out a warning to their customers. They are able to send all types of messages about non essential information, yet they can't post the fact that the following appears to be true. I feel every user should have received an email.
1. It appears that Xfinity's system has been hacked or compromised, totally. The scammers are sending emails with the exact same email address as the one that is used by Xfinity.
2. The scammers have detailed information about your account, last four digits, your email address and the amount that you currently owe.
3. When they make the payment, they are actually paying your account. You can log on to your account and see that the payment has been made. (note this is where I was snagged as I felt that only Xfinity could be making a payment (credit) to my account. Note also that the email confirming the credit, again comes from the same email address that Xfinity uses.
4. If someone can send an email from an internal email system, i.e. Xfinity's they how else could they do this, without being inside the email server, so now how can any email from this address be trusted?
5. If you attempt to call anyone at Xfinity, you get a person on the phone, who appear to be clueless about this issue, and are hard to understand, and give you a total run around.
6. The Xfinity Security number when called can really do nothing, and again act like there is nothing wrong on their end.
7. Now as of 9:00 pm central time 01-27-23, I cannot log onto the main Xfinity.com website to see my account as it has a 500 error (net site is down) with no idea on uptime. This poses additional issues since
I can also not log on to the mobile app, where all my internet information is contained to see details about my router, pods and overall connection issues.
8. I also attempted to change my account number with Xfinity today, and was told I can't do that unless I totally close my account and start over. I was told to change my password and make sure I had the 2 step verification turned on. I had the 2 step turned on and did change my password.
I have been a customer with this company since early 1999. Close to 23 years. This is not the way I expect to be treated.

Left voicemail from australian zip code posing as xfinity, requesting a call back to an American 855 number. Called back in lapse of judgment and they know all about my xfinity account details- my plan and address. They said I qualify for a 50% off promotion if I pay the year up front, or $300. They said this promotion is in collaboration with the Target store, which did not make sense, so I googled this while on the phone before any payment or sensitive information was given, and realized it was a common scam technique. I hung up, but still concerned that they have access to my address and xfinity account details. What can I do to make sure this sensitive information is better protected?

Almost fell for this scam just about now. I called [Edited: "Personal Information"] (which I obtained from a voice mail left from another 1-800 number) only to be answered by a person posing as an xfinity customer service person. I mentioned that my bill is too high and asked if there is any promotions that I could avail. He mentioned about the 50% off per month for the next 2 years and mentioned that Comcast will charge $10 to my account to provide me this promotion. I approved it and after a min or so asked me to check my comcast account and credit card account. I did see the $10 charged on my credit card account and saw that the $10 was applied to my comcast account.
He then "verified" my home address, phone number, last 4 digits of my xfinity account and mentioned about the story of Target providing part of this promotion and to complete it, I need purchase a Target gift card and provide him the gift card info. I got suspicious and cut the call. I reported this to the Customer Security Assurance Team specifically to understand how Comcast charged me the $10?
I was told that anyone can make payments to anyone's comcast account. So the scammer used my compromised credit card to pay my compromised comcast account just to make me fully trust that I am indeed talking to a Comcast customer service person. So... watch out folks!
