Target Gift Card Scam *BEWARE THEY ARE GOOD*

*Edited Preface* Upon reading my experience please take the time to reply if you are engaged in the scammers net. I hope to prevent more victims and this post should serve as reference for Xfinity to take action.

Well, I just got hooked by this scam this weekend. Soon after completing the "Target Promotion" I searched Target Xfinity promotion and my stomach sank. I will tell you that I am with it on the tech front, have never fell for a scam, easily ID the fishing garbage, always check where emails are from even if they look to be from my bank, cable company etc. Given the level of detail they operate with makes me believe that it's either an internal job at Xfinity/Comcast or they have had a major data breach in which they are not aware or they have not acknowledged to their customers. Part of the hook is that Xfinity puts you on promotions that expire, raise the prices in an effort to get you to search for another promotion and/or contact them where they attempt to bundle additional services. Another problem with Xfinity that p[lays into their hands is that contacting an actual person at Xfinity requires detective like skill.

I received a voicemail offering up to a 50% off promotion for 36 months. Sounds good as it gets my internet only service from $90/mo. to $45/mo., which is reasonable as many other internet services today are in that range. Upon calling the scammers had full access to my Xfinifty account and history. They could not have logged in externally with my password and user ID as when that is done from an unknown device there is a 2 step authentication which I did not receive. They outlined the promotion which was a no 36 month term from lowering the amount to $45, hey would waive the current $90 bill due, and send me a $50 gift card. About half way through a 30 minute call they explained the "catch" in that this promotion was sponsored by Target, which through this promotion and advertising subsidizes the promotion. The details the agent had included that I was on autopay and had access to only the last 4 digits of my checking account that was used. They knew my bill had just recently increased (previously I have spoken to a live Xfinity agent when promotions expire through a reach out from Xfinity), they knew the cost of my service, the speed of my service, and that I was internet only. In finalizing the deal they explained the connection with Target and that it required paying for one year of service in advance and paying with Target gift cards which drives revenue for the sponsor. Upon accepting the offer they waived my current bill due and asked me to check the Xfinity app and confirm that the bill had been waived, which is was and now was showing $0 due. The agent explained that he was with the sales department and gave me a promotion code to reference and provided a number to billing to complete the process. The agent explained that it had to be completed within 24hrs and provided a number [Edited: "Invalid Phone Number"] to call and explained that billing was open until 8pm. I secured two gift cards totaling $540, called "billing" and all sounded like Xfinity and legit. The agent requested my promotion reference number, pulled up the details, explained the promotion, and took the gift cards as payment.

The initial VM I had received said " Hello this is Xfinity. We are contacting you about your 50% discount offer on your monthly bill which is set to expire today. Call back at this number on your caller ID to confirm your account and lock in your savings. Thank you." 

After three call to Xfinity and utilizing my acquired detective work I was finally able to connect to a person to confirm the promotion was indeed not an active promotion with Xfinity. They connected me with a security department and after 20 minutes I spoke to an agent. The agent took the information and provided a reference number and said it would be escalated I would be hearing from the department. To perhaps save another time, the direct number to the security department is 888-565-4329.

I got a similar call today. Thankfully I contacted target to confirm that this was indeed a scam, and the target gift can only be used in target websites/store.

I got such a call in the Month of Jan 2025, luckily I did not lose any money as Target helped me to cancel my gift cards and also credited back my money. Target support is just awesome. I wish I can say the same thing about Xfinity, but Xfinity is aweful. I reported this to Xfinity Fraud Department assuming they will do something about it as there is a Data Breach on their side. Instead, they blocked automatic payment on my account. Now, since Jan 2025, I have to drive to another city to their store and pay my bill by cash only. They will not accept Check payment or credit card payment from me. I am Xfinity customer for 30 years and they are treating me like this. I made several calls to get my automatic payment enabled, but no success. Is there anyone in the same boat? Any suggestions how can I get help from Xfinity to get my auto payment enabled? I fee harassed by Xfinity. Thanks for suggestions.

user_6a5ruf Have you tried reaching out to the Comcast Customer Security Assurance Team for assistance? You may have security blocks due to the fraud attempt on your account preventing such payments from being made.

it happened to me as well back in April.  No money lost. I backed out immediately after I heard about the gift cards. However my account was messed up for over 6 weeks.  I was able to set up an automatic payments eventually but it was a painful experience. Good luck!

@XfinityMartyR​  I did call Xfinity Security Assurance team several times, they always connect me to Billing Department and Billing Department is unable to set it up. So, I am still struggling for last 8 months no breakthru. Give Feedback to Xfinity about my experience, but they don't really care. This is so sad.

user_6a5ruf Did they mention how long the payments would be blocked? I believe it's usually 6 months on a blocked account if it can't be removed. Also, you should be able to visit a Western Union Quick Collect location to pay your bill by money order if that's closer than the Xfinity Store.

@user_6a5ruf​ This apparently stems from a 3rd party data breach of a former Xfinity vendor, Xfinity was just fined $1.5 Million for it. Xfinity not taking actions to protect its affected customers from further exposure to this scam and is not warning its affected customers that their data was stolen. The exact same thing happened to me. I was able to call phone number on back of my gift cards and the deactivated them immediately and put it under investigation and had me file a report with internet fraud from a link they sent me. I emailed target security with front and back of card numbers and receipt and I’m hoping they deactivated in time. It was about 2 hours after I made my payment. Today I have been receiving several nonstop texts and calls saying that there was a problem with my payment and to call them at another 855 phone number to resolve and phone calls requesting that I call back the number on my caller ID. It is a very authentic sounding recording. I just received a text now saying that my account will deactivated and they will apply a $2,000 fine to my account unless I call and pay. I’m hoping that I am receiving these calls because target gift card service deactivated the cards in time and I hope I will my money or at least the gift cards back. I’m usually very skeptical and never go anything over the phone. But when they added the $9.99 promotion charge and made the pmt with my cc on file, I assumed also it must be xfinity.  Even received text notification. The texts today and the messages look authentic as well. If this happens to anyone else call the gift card company immediately.  They seemed aware of the scammed and deactivated immediately.

I want to thank you for posting this. I fell for a scam early this year, and I've been too ashamed to share the details, because I thought I was waaay too smart for something like this. When I look back, the signs were there, but at the time, it seemed legitimate. The caller said he was an FBI agent, that my account had been compromised, but it was an inside job, so I needed to withdraw all the money to protect it. The call was being recorded, he said, and he supposedly recorded me swearing an oath not to tell anyone about this investigation. He knew everything about me, and without going into further details, the scam was very sophisticated.

I lost a few thousand dollars before I wised up. It could have been worse, and it was money I could afford to lose. The painful part is how ashamed & stupid I feel. Now sharing this in hopes it will spare someone else. Never agree to any financial transaction unless you've met the person.

If you have gotten a call claiming to be from Comcast asking you to buy gift cards or paying upfront for six months or more in exchange for 50% off your bill the FTC is well aware of this scam.  If you get a call like this you can report it to:     https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/
The FTC also has a great webpage on Scams.  Please check it out as well.
For Target Gift Cards:
Call 1 (800) 544-2943 and follow Target’s instructions. 
Keep a copy of the Target gift card or your store receipt.
Please help to stop the spread of this kind of fraud.

Good day to everyone.  I just had the same voice mail as described above, claiming that my plan was ending next month and Xfinity has 2 promotional plans.  Both you have to prepay in advance which seemed weird but ok.  The first plan was less than I am paying but has to pay like $1200 initially which of course no one would do so they tried to hook me with and $800 for Lifetime coverage.  And this was a Target Promotion.  The guy even said they would pay my current payment off, which he did.  The catch was because it was Target Promotion, either a Target Credit Card or Prepaid Gift Card is needed.  Even though he did not have my log in information with a crazy hard password, I did get a number on my phone which was to confirm who I was.  Since there was in my opinion no way he would of gotten that password, it didnt even occur to me about that may have been the authentication code.  That I do not know.  Hey did pay my next payment, however when I talked to the security as Xfinity they told me it would be reversed.

I decided to do a quick search and found this sight along with others saying this was a scam.

So like above, and to confirm, here are the numbers I ended up calling Xfinity with:

Security: 888-934-6489

Customer Service:  800-934-6489

The scammers numbers used with me were: [Edited: "possible malicious number"]

Always call your service provider back to confirm information.  I am glad I did, but I was so close to doing this myself.

You said it best that if anyone is ever unsure if something is a scam it is always best to contact us directly. As a heads-up for future reference as well we never proactively call people when promotions are ending or to change your plan because of these phone scams.

I just got caught in this.  They paid my current balance.  I called Xfinity, they said my account was secure and this was a scam.  Did anything happen with the balance that these scammers paid?

You will see after 3 to 5 days this scammer payment will be cancelled and again balance will reappear on account. Hopefully this helps

@user_c72spl​ Unfortunately, the payment will be rejected later and you will end up with penalty charge for the declined payment. I tried to get it back, but it's challenging to confirm.

The scam is good for sure AND I was contacted via text and VM back in July. I went thru Target, Xfinity, FTC reporting and now appealing the dispute on my credit card. I have not been able to get refunded yet. But with the detailed packet I sent (certified) just this week should hold some ground. IF my credit card doesn’t work, I am going to look into legal methods. Especially, bc Xfinity seems to be relaxed and how many have been scammed.

It has been an extremely frustrating experience with Xfinity. I first spent hours filing a fraud ticket and was assured I’d hear back within 48 hours. Instead, the ticket was closed without my involvement.

Afterward, Xfinity charged me fees tied to the reversal of the scam payment. When I called the billing department, they referred me to the security/fraud department again. I then filed another ticket for a refund and was told that someone from a higher department would call to confirm. I am not hopeful, but I will find out in the next few days.

The most frustrating part is that the departments don’t communicate with each other. Customers like me are left to explain the situation and act as the go-between repeatedly!!!

Very helpful. I was aware of scams in the past that dealt with people paying things with a gift card so they cannot Trace them. So I Googled and found out that it was indeed a scam.

This happened with me as well. I got a call today morning and it is very convincing.

They asked me purchase Target gift card worth 660 ( split it into 2 gift card of 330$). Luckily I realized this is scam at that moment and I dropped the call.

I don't know how they are able to access and make a transaction with y bank account which is very scary

Same thing happened to me, with a few details different. It sounded legit until he said I needed to pay with Target gift cards. He was Indian. I called Security (thanks for the number) and Billing so hope everything is ok and safe.

Just to let Xfinity know this is still happening.
I've been called 3x in the last week to save my 50% of offer in the next hour.

Do you think it's time for Xfinity to do something about this?
At least an email warning customers would be appropriate.

We highly recommend that you block the number on your device, even if you're receiving calls from different numbers, block them. Doing this will help, but there is currently no way to block all calls like this from making it to you.

@user_xm8bai​  That is the tricky part as I have followed the recommendations here as well as spoke to my ATG office and they only help CIVIL issues within my state. This is considered criminal bc the persons involved on impersonating Xfin/Comcast are not from the company (eye roll, obviously) NOBODY IS HELPING. [Edited: "Soliciting"]. I am out $540 and my credit card will NOT help!

Almost fell for the same!

I received a voicemail regarding 50% discount offer. 

I call back and indian accent guy answers (all ok so far since most customer services are located in India) from xfinity, ask to spell my name. Introduces the offer and then when i say that I agree, he "signs me up" for the promotion and provides you with a code and ask you to wait to receive the text message (you think they have your number because they see your account, but they see your number since you are calling them). Then message arrives later and i am already  "transferred to the billing department" that explains again the "catch", either make a credit card with target of just pay by gift card. I say would be better juts the gift card. Then the guy (seemed the same voice by the way) ask me hown far is the closed target or any other shop that sells gift cards. The promotion will expire by 8pm but they will give you 50 dollars cash back if you pay within 100 minutes to compensate for the hassle of getting the gift card from a store...at that point I say that GIFT card procedure is really ODD,  how can I verify that you are actually Xfinity? do you know my home address? and he sais i can tell you that starts with "xxx" and said the correct street number.

They probably lookup your home address by the phone number you are calling from OR they have access to xfinity customer database. I confirmed this is a scam just googling and reading this post. 

It was very very well handled and the levelm of detail and information is amazing, very very easy to fall for this. If was not for the GIFT CARD flag they might have tricked me. ALWAYS DOUBE CHECK AND DO NOT SEND PAYMENTS ON A RUSH BASES. Had they sent me a link for online payment with nice Xfinity logo page I might have fallen for this.

The issue with all of this is that the bad guys know your account number and have associated it with your phone number.   That implies that Xfinity has been either hacked at some point, or an insider was or is providing this information to the bad guys.   Xfinity needs to come clean on this and put out a letter to all of their customers admitting what happened and cautioning all of their customers that they will not be calling people offering deals that need to be paid for with gift cards.  

 

This thread is filled with people who knew nothing about this scam and either got taken, or almost taken, because Xfinity has not come clean and proactively reached out to their customer base informing them that scammers are in possession of their account numbers, phone numbers, and home addresses, and are actively attempting to use that information to swindle their customers.   That's the least Xfinity could do under the circumstances, especially since this scam is ongoing.   I too received a voice mail today offering the 50% discount.   As I was called last February with the same scam, it shows that the scammers aren't giving up or going away.   They will continue doing this until they are either arrested (unlikely as they are probably overseas) or it becomes unprofitable to continue because Xfinity has notified all their customers to be on the lookout for this scam.
