xi5 compatibility

I spoke to a comcast rep on a telephone call and asked him specifically if xi5 set top would work with Motorola MG7700 modem router.  The answer was yes. When my wife went to lease one, she was told that she had to lease a Comcast gateway.  Which is correct.
