Xfinity Fiber Installed — Great Wired Speeds, But Wi‑Fi Is All Over the Place. Need Advice.

A few days ago, an Xfinity tech came out to install fiber, an ONT, and the new gateway. When he left, everything looked great—Wi‑Fi speeds were hitting around 800 Mbps on our 1 Gbps plan, and the wired connection was perfect.
Since then, the Wi‑Fi has gone completely inconsistent. I’ve been checking speeds throughout the day, and they bounce anywhere from 50 Mbps to 300 Mbps, sometimes dropping altogether. Meanwhile, if I plug directly into the XER10, I get the full 1 Gbps with no issues, so the fiber and ONT seem fine. The problem is clearly the wireless side of the gateway.
It’s not my devices. We still have our old provider active while we test Xfinity, and those same devices pull around 700 Mbps on the old network with zero drops. So the issue is isolated to the Xfinity gateway’s Wi‑Fi performance.
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
•  Restarted/rebooted the gateway multiple times — one reboot helped briefly, but speeds dropped again.
•  Renamed the 5 GHz band to force devices onto it — no improvement.
•  Tried logging into the gateway — the default admin/password credentials don’t work.
I’m hesitant to do a full factory reset because I don’t want to wipe everything unless that’s truly the next step. But right now, Xfinity is not looking great compared to what we already have.
For context, this is all on a Quest 3s household with a mix of devices, and the inconsistency is noticeable across all of them.
At this point, I’m trying to evaluate whether Xfinity is worth switching to, and so far… it’s losing. Any advice or next steps would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  Thank you for your reply and the links. I think the big issue is the gateway wireless as I think I narrowed it down to that. Problem is with some of the solutions you offered and the links is I cannot get into my XER10 gateway as it is locked down, and the default admin credentials don't work. From what I gather from other boards once I get into the admin portal it is so locked down I can change anything anyway. Also I read that the XER10 doesn't even offer bridge mode or that is also locked down. SMH..

Hello @user_25bbe1, thanks for taking the time to leave a post. I know how frustrating it is when everything looks great on install day, only for the Wi-Fi to become inconsistent afterward. Based on everything you’ve tested, you’ve already done a lot of the right steps, and the fact that your wired connection is consistently hitting 1 Gbps is actually really helpful. @EG provided some helpful troubleshooting links, which I see you mentioned you checked out. Where is your XER10 located in the home?  As mentioned by @EG, you have to enable admin tool access first. Did you complete this step before trying to log in?
@EG Thank you!

@XfinityMarshante Hi, thanks for the reply . Yes I have enabled the admin tool in the app. I just get a username and password incorrect when I use the default admin/password combo.

@user_25bbe1, you're welcome. I see you mentioned below that you were able to get into the admin tool. That's wonderful. When running the speed test wirelessly, are you near the modem or in another room?

You may have to enable Admin Tool access first;

https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/admin-tool-access

Open the Xfinity App. (You'll need a working connection for this step).

Go to the WiFi tab.

Select View WiFi equipment and open Advanced Settings.

Select Admin Tool online access.

Slide the toggle button to Allow Admin Tool access (ON).

Select Save.

Visit http://10.0.0.1 while connected to your WiFi at home.
Username: admin
Password: Check the sticker on the bottom of your Xfinity WiFi Gateway.

The XER10 does not have a bridge mode feature.
