ANSWERED: How to improve your Xfinity Wifi
Many things can affect your WiFi connection. If your WiFi isn’t working well, try these steps:
- Use the Xfinity app to troubleshoot.
- Chat with the Xfinity Assistant on your computer.
- Try the tips listed below.
Customers who rely on non-verbal communication have access to dedicated support through our ASL Support Center.
Run a full network test
If you rent an Xfinity Gateway, our all-in-one WiFi modem and router, you can use the Xfinity app to run a full network test. This test helps you find and troubleshoot common connection issues.
The full network test checks for:
- Outages in your area.
- Internet speed to your gateway.
- Connection strength to your devices.
Check gateway or router placement
To get the best WiFi signal, place your gateway, modem, or router in the middle of your home. Try to keep it on the main floor, not in the attic or basement.
Make sure it stands upright and sits at least two feet off the floor. Check that the coax cable is finger tight.
Avoid placing your device:
- In tight or hidden spaces
- Near things that block signals
To reduce signal issues, keep your gateway away from:
- Walls, furniture, and large mirrors
- Metal surfaces (like computer cases)
- Halogen or fluorescent lights
- Microwaves and refrigerators
- TVs and computer monitors
- Cordless phones
- Baby monitors
- Bluetooth devices
- Large water sources (like aquariums or water heaters)
Note: Consider adding Xfinity WiFi Extenders to help extend your WiFi coverage throughout your home. To learn more and purchase, go to xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/wifi/wifi-extender.
Confirm your device is connected to your in-home WiFi network
Sometimes your device may connect to a public Xfinity WiFi hotspot instead of your personal home network. These networks include:
- xfinitywifi (public hotspot)
- XFINITY (secure hotspot)
These connections can slow down your WiFi speed.
Go to the WiFi settings of your personal device to make sure you're connected to your personal WiFi network.
Make sure the device isn’t blocked or paused in the Xfinity app. Learn how to unpause the device by reviewing how to personalize and control your home network with the Xfinity app.
Use a single WiFi name for your Xfinity home network
If you have a gateway, you can make your WiFi easier to manage by using one name and password for your network.
Most gateways are dual-band or tri-band, depending on the model. That means they broadcast different WiFi signals:
- Dual-band: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
- Tri-band: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz
Using a single name and password for all bands lets your gateway automatically connect your device to the best available signal. This helps keep your connection strong and seamless as you move around your home.

Use Ethernet for high-bandwidth devices
For the best connection, plug devices like desktop computers, gaming consoles, and streaming devices directly into your gateway or router using an ethernet cable.
These devices use a lot of bandwidth. A wired connection can help reduce lag and improve speed, especially for activities like online gaming or watching movies/TV shows.
Note: Ethernet cables have different category ratings that affect speed. The higher the category, the faster the cable.

Check Bridge Mode and antennae for third-party routers
If you use your own router with a gateway, make sure the gateway is in Bridge Mode. To learn more, see Bridge Mode.
To get the best signal from your router:
- Point one antenna straight up (12 o’clock).
- Point the other sideways (3 or 9 o’clock).
This helps your router send a stronger Wi-Fi signal throughout your home.
Note: For the best setup, check your device manufacturer’s website for router improvement options specific to your model.
Consider a different speed option
If many devices use your WiFi at the same time, your network may slow down. To improve performance, you may want to upgrade to a higher speed tier. This increases your overall bandwidth, which helps your devices stay connected and run smoothly.
We offer several speed options to fit your needs.

Other factors that may impact WiFi connectivity
Sometimes your WiFi may slow down for reasons that aren’t related to your gateway or router. Here are a few things to check:
- Older devices may not support faster speeds or newer WiFi technology.
- Outdated operating systems can limit performance.
- Distance from your gateway matters. The farther away your device is, the weaker the signal.
- Nearby WiFi networks (like your neighbors’) can cause interference, especially during busy times.
