XB3 bridge mode requires frequent IP /release /renew

I have the ARRIS TG1682G connected to my Windows 10 desktop Ethernet with onboard Realtek PCIe GbE Family chip.  I'm not using an external router with this gateway.

eMTA & DOCSIS Software Version: 10.1.27B.SIP.PC20.CT
Software Image Name: TG1682_4.12p29s1_PROD_sey
Advanced Services: TG1682G
Packet Cable: 2.0

In bridge mode, I get frequent connection drops and must do ipconfig /release and /renew in order to restore operation quickly.  If I wait and do nothing, the connection is eventually restored automatically after some minutes have elapsed; the time it takes varies.  My connection speed is unaffected in bridge mode.  According to ipconfig /all, my DHCP lease duration is supposedly 2 hours.

Most often, the connection to a given site or app will be good until I do something else on the site or app, such as use a popup dialog or other functionality.

Example:  I'll be watching a YouTube video short and the video plays w/o a problem until I open the comments section, then I instantly get the busy/buffer animated icon that just spins and comments don't load (and sometimes the video pauses) until I manually /release /renew (or wait it out).

Example 2:  I'll be on a given site and it's working fine, until I open another tab, then the connection instantly drops until I /release /renew (or wait it out and manually refresh the pages).

It also drops when I don't do anything new/different, but the time between drops is longer.  I would think this might be due to content having already been downloaded (such as a video stream) and not requiring the connection, which has likely dropped, but I just don't see it because it reconnected before the video buffer emptied.  However, example 3:  chat sites.  The connection may hold for say half an hour – I know this because I see input from users continue to scroll during this time – but, as soon as I open a dialog box (e.g., to view or change my profile), 90% of the time it causes the connection to drop.  If I don't do anything and just watch the room, connection still drops occasionally.

Drops occur with IPv6 enabled or disabled.

These drops occur with various browsers and non-browser apps.

Creating a script that performs /release /renew at regular intervals isn't a good solution, since the connection almost always drops immediately upon doing something new/different, so I'd still have to wait for the next interval – this script would have to renew practically every second to account for potential user activity, which would not only be ridiculous in and of itself, but for Windows to perform the release/renewal takes time, so the script would conflict with the ongoing ipconfig process from the previous script commands.

Also, I'd rather not create a hotkey and have to renew manually so frequently.  Even with a hotkey workaround, it's still infuriating when my activities are interrupted like this.

I don't see any DHCP configuration possible in the gateway menu, nor in Windows network adapter settings other than enable/disable.

... I get frequent connection drops ...

Network connection problems are often due to poor coax connections or damaged coax cable, usually in or near your home. Running the cable through a surge protector, a defective splitter, or too many splitters can cause signal problems as well. If there is an amplifier in the line make sure it's getting power.

If you want to troubleshoot this yourself, please see Internet Troubleshooting Tips. If you still need help, please post your Internet plan speed and the following information from your gateway (from http://192.168.100.1 or http://10.0.0.1):

  • downstream: power levels, SNR (or MER), error counts, and uptime
  • upstream: power levels
  • event log, if available (Be sure to remove or blot out any MAC addresses. Forum security processing considers them "personal information" and may prevent the event log from posting if these are present.)

If you can't find the problem or you'd rather have Comcast take care of it and an employee does not respond to your message here, call them at the phone number on your bill or 1-800-Comcast, or use one of the options on https://www.xfinity.com/support/contact-us/. It's not likely they can fix the problem remotely. If not, insist they send a tech out to identify the cause and correct it.

If the tech finds bad coax, splitters, amplifiers, or connections in your home (even if Comcast originally supplied them) you'll probably have to pay for the visit ($70-$100) unless you have their Service Protection Plan ( https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/service-protection-plan, closed to customers that don't already have it). If the trouble is due to a faulty Comcast rental device or anything outside your home you shouldn't be charged.

It only happens in bridge mode.  There are no issues with bridge disabled and using the gateway's built-in router.

Thanks for confirming, @Xindefinite ! We are limited in our demarcation point with the use of bridge mode but one suggestion I can make is perhaps resetting the gateway to factory settings (warning: this will erase any custom settings you added), resetting the power, so it downloads the latest firmware and then setting up again to see if the issue remains. If all else fails, if you rent the device we can certainly swap it out at no cost.

Hi @Xindefinite Sounds like a pretty unique issue. Do you have the means to try and see if this occurs on any other devices? Another PC or laptop?

@XfinityFrank

The only other PC I have is really old, as in Windows XP old.  I probably couldn't even get the gateway or apps to work with that one.

I don't have a working laptop at this time.
