Wi-fi Privacy warnings on iPhone

We are getting new warnings on our devices, a privacy warning.  It is explained by the iPhone that the router, which is an xfinity router, is blocking encrypted DNS traffic.

How can this privacy issue be fixed?

Got it!  Thank you so much for making us aware.  Is this just an occurrence isolated with just Apple devices?

Same issue for me - router just rebooted due to a power interruption, now when connecting to my home network/router, my iPhone (in Settings/Wi-Fi) advises: "Privacy Warning This network is blocking encrypted DNS traffic.  The names of websites and other servers your device accesses on this network may be monitored and recorded by other devices on this network."

@user_9ca31b apparently not, because I started receiving the same message yesterday. I had to go into my settings ( go to General and scroll down to transfer or reset phone. Hit reset then reset Network Settings. You’ll just need to remember your xfinity password). When I did this, it worked, but then my address was “Hidden” which made my personal information vulnerable. I had to call xfinity again to take care of that. It took over 2 hrs to get it fixed yesterday, and it just happened again.

The privacy warning is still unresolved for me.  I can connect my iPhone to my home Xfinity Wi-Fi network, but only with the warning in place.  Same for my spouse's iPhone.  Not similar issues for other devices on the same network, e.g. laptop running Windows 11

@user_6babc8 same here, all other devices function fine. For what it’s worth, I went to my account on the Xfinity app and turned off advanced security with xfi, the warning went away….

Xfinity... Could you simply check with your data collection team and confirm that they have disabled encrypted DNS in order to collect and sell more information about your customers?

Thanks!

@XfinityKassie my iphone and my spouse's iphone are fully updated.  The issue started for me immediately after a router reboot (Xfinity Gateway) due to a short power outage.  Up to that point, iphone and Xfinity router were playing happily in the sandbox, after that, not playing nicely.

Thank you for sharing your experience here on the Xfinity Community Forum, @user_6babc8. There was a recent update that Apple rolled out and my iPhone began doing the same thing. I followed the steps here, and it seemed to help. Can you follow those steps and let me know if that helps for you?

Happening with my Apple devices also.

Just had my malfunctioning router replaced and now this.

Apple seems to think Xfinity are the culprits due to their DNS settings.

@Sammie10066 Apple correctly identifies that Xfinity prevents use of "Secure DNS" which is the analogous to HTTPS for web sites (as opposed to HTTP).

This is a *choice* by Xfinity it is not a defect.   DNS (Domain Name Service is used to convert a name like amazon.com to an IP address).   By forcing all DNS traffic through their servers to collect data about your internet use that helps them make $$$ at the expense of your privacy.  In the extreme the could inject their own advertising too.

I see the business case for them but they should admit to doing this but I expect they will simply continue to play games with their customers and ask for the specific error messages and then go silent.

This is why they want you to remove private relay. Sadly, it also opened you up to hackers and can expose sensitive data.

Bummer, but before going off on what a thread on "homepage of the internet" says, perhaps the following may help - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252895161

Just my .2 cents.

 Thanks and good luck.

@user_bb801b Xfinity's recommendation is to reference Apple's help page to disable private relays.  I'm not sure how that is relying on the home page of the interenet.

The link you provided seems rather opaque.  Was the SSID = home?  Was there an account property at xfinity that classified an SSID as 'home'?  What new account was needed (new xfinity account)?

The Private Relay should not be generating this error. This is coming from your DNS servers, because I cannot believe everyone complaining is coming up with the same exact issues. The private relay is what is protecting us right now. If I reboot the Xfinity Gateway, then go into my Apple WIFI Setting, forget my Network and log back into it the error goes away but then returns a few days later.
However, this issue is not with Apple but with Comcast data mining users Internet activity, so you can sell it. You’re purposely exposing us to hackers just to receive a few coins.

Same thing happened to me yesterday when 2 technicians came to my home to replace one of the boxes. Suddenly, after they left I started to receive the Privacy Warning message on my Iphone and IPad. Hours on the phone with multiple representatives that could offer no explanation and just transferred me to another rep. The last rep suggested I change my WIFI password so did that and had to reset all my Ring devices. I'm so frustrated with Xfinity. They are the worst.

I have already contacted the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission for unethical, deceptive and unfair business practices. I was told this is a violation of the Consumer Privacy Act, specifically related to data security.

I just contacted @xfinity about this very problem, and they directed me to this thread for a resolution to the problem. That’s nuts.

They put in a new router recently and that’s when I started to get the privacy warning.

@user_7aa7ce That’s because the reps don’t know or not allowed to say that Xfinity is the source of the problem. Thank God I didn’t switch my cell phone service to them.

There is an easy fix:

https://allthings.how/wifi-privacy-warning-iphone/

It is *NOT* xfinity doing anything shady; it is the way apple has iOS set up.
