How to use an Ethernet Switch

Hi.

I have a Voice and Data Modem TECHNICOLOR CGM4140COM.

It has two ports. One I use for my mobile network extender.

Into the other port, I would like to connect 2 notebook PCs using ethernet cables to connect to the Internet. One is my personal PC. The other notebook I use for work.

I plugged a Netgear Fast Ethernet Switch FS605 v2 into the modem. I plug one PC into the switch and it works fine. But one minute after I plug the second PC into the switch, both lose Internet connection.

What can I do to use my 2 notebooks on ethernet cables with my modem?

Thank you for your help.

Fast Ethernet is pretty slow... 100mbs. I'd definitely get a gigabit switch they are really cheap. As to your issue are both systems connected to the switch set to DHCP?

@tardis13. Are you still having the issue? I also recommend getting a newer Gigabit switch, but have you tried setting static IP on both PC's? Does it happen on both ethernet ports of the gateway?

I no longer work for Comcast.

Yes, I still have the issue on both ports, both DHCP or static.

The devices both connect at first but then 60 seconds later, both disconnect and revert to WiFi.

Sounds like you may need a new modem. Either way I'd like to a look at your account to see if we can't figure this out. In order to get started can you please send me a private message to Xfinity Support with your full name and full address by clicking the chat icon in the top right?

I'm having this issue too, (Model: TG4482A).  I'm using a Lynksys 2016 GB switch, (ya it's old but didn't have this issue with my former internet provider).  I've tried both static and DHCP IP's and read somewhere to use port #2 on modem, tried that as well, little more stable, but still occasionally lose connection.

Static IP's will occasionally lose internet, (internal traffic continues to work) and DHCP will lose IP address and internet and revert to 169... address.
