Help on Securing Wifi?

Need help please regarding security for my wifi.

I use a Fire Stick and I keep getting buffering.  I went into preferences and it shows my name for the  wifi and it is secure.  However the Xfinity WiFi says not secure.  Why is this and is this the reason for the buffering?

Thanks for reaching out, I’m happy to help clear this up!

What you’re seeing is normal. Your Fire Stick is showing two different networks:

  • Your home WiFi shows as secure because it’s password protected
  • “xfinitywifi” shows as not secure because it’s a public hotspot open to Xfinity customers

As long as your Fire Stick is connected to your home WiFi network, the “not secure” message for xfinitywifi is nothing to worry about and is not causing the buffering.

Buffering is usually related to things like WiFi signal strength, network congestion, or overall speed. You may want to:

  • Check that your Fire Stick has a strong signal
  • Restart your modem and router
  • Limit other devices using the network during streaming

Please let us know if you have any questions about this or if you still need help. Our team is here for you.

Hi Peter,

Can using my laptop cause the buffering while I'm watching my Fire TV?  The speed says 720 and I pay for 1,000 gigs.   I'm not computer savy unfortunately and I'm 80 years old.

user_w4d3xg No worries at all, we got your back and happy to help. Honestly, if you are just using a laptop and Fire TV on 1 Gig network you shouldn't be having any buffering on your Fire TV, however this depends on how far away the Fire TV is from your modem and is your FIre TV connected to your personal in home WiFi network?

The TV is right next to the Wifi, the lap top is about 10 feet away.

You're doing a wonderful job filling us in on the context surrounding this issue, @user_w4d3xg.

That's not far at all, and your speed over Wi-Fi is actually in a pretty solid. Which device did you run the speed test on?

Our concern is that your Fire TV is connected to the "xfinitywifi" hotspot network rather than your home network. Your best scenario will always be connecting to your personal home network.

All I know is my Wifi name shows securty with a number.  The Xfinity wifi says not secure.  That means lots of others in my building are using their wifi or some sort of connection, correct?

I don't know what to do because it's a pain to keep using the firestick to connect because of the buffering.

I used the Xfinity speed that's how I got the 720 (MPS?) for the exact letters.
