Xfinity "told" me I could upgrade my TV boxes to get 4K video. But apparently it will not work without Xfinity Internet.

I could not find any information on what model of box Xfinity was sending me, so I had to order it to find out. After it arrived today, I was able to google "XG1v4-A" as it was printed on the back of the device. Turns out you need to have X1 internet to be compatible with the device. I dumped Comcast internet a few months back for something MUCH better. I guess Xfinity just shipped it without any thought to whether the customer could actually use it or not.

So how do I return this incompatible device (unused obviously) in the best possible method, so it won't get lost in the Comcast systems and I get charged for 2 boxes?

Where did you see that you need Xfinity Internet? The TV service on that box comes through the coax connection and whatever internet is needed for it is handled by the box, not your home service.  The Xi6 WiFi box may need Comcast internet, but not the XG1v4.

Thanks for the info .....

Maybe I did not understand this correctly:

For full functionality, including apps and On Demand content, Xfinity Internet is required. If you want a standalone 4K streaming device without tying to Xfinity Internet, consider using a Roku, Apple TV, or Fire Stick with the free Xfinity Stream app (which requires an Xfinity TV subscription but not Internet service for the app itself).

I think what we are saying is that the streaming over internet does not work with the Xfinity system without Xfinity internet, but the cable TV provided signal requires only the XG1v4-A and a 4k TV for the Xfinity 4K TV service over cable. So I should go ahead and hook it up!

Are we also saying that if you have multiple 4K TVs there is no smaller "slave" box available for a second TV, you must have multiple XG1v4-A?

@TimDH  I have Xfinity Internet, so no personal experience with apps on an XG1v4 without it.  I use other devices for streaming most of the time anyway as the XG1v4 doesn't support Dolby Vision.  But, yes, go ahead and hook it up and see what you get.  Where's that quote from?

There's no small 4K satellite box.  We have two 4K TVs and two XG1v4 boxes.

@BIslander thanks again for the info...

Your setup sounds pretty similar to ours. The quote came from using Brave search with AI enabled. Basically, Brave does the search and then AI summarizes what was found. I find it convenient, but I often drill down to the web sites themselves to validate the source of the data, depending on how critical the search answer is.
