xfinity stream won't work with chromecast

I'm trying to cast from xfinty stream on my tablet (also tried my phone) and it won't locate the device.  it tells me to make sure the other device is on the same wifi network.  I only have one wifi network and xfinity is the only app that won't connect.  I tried Amazon, hbo max, Peacock, etc. and they all connect instantly.

my tv is new and has built in chromecast.  my xfinity stream app is up to date.

any suggestions?

UNCNU Hello there, and thank you for sharing your experience with Xfinit Forums when trying to cast Xfinity Stream. I'm here to help! I have a quick question. When you got your new TV, did you update your wifi network settings to your personal wifi network? I ask this, as the other Apps aren't as centric around as being connected to your home network as the Xfinity Stream App is.

I'm not clear what you mean by updating my personal wifi network.  I have a single wifi network provided by xfinity.  every device: TV, tablet, phone, laptop, etc. is connected the same and only wifi network that I have.

UNCNU I'm sorry for the confusion. When you added the new TV to your home network, did you need to make any changes to your home network like changing the wifi name or password? That could create an issue if all devices were not also updated to the new settings.

no, didn't change anything.  I changed the network name a few years ago when I got an updated gateway from xfinity, but all my devices are on that (and both my phone and TV were acquired after that).

Thanks for clarifying that @UNCNU.  The full documentation we provide is located here: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/cast-xfinity-stream-to-chromecast.

From that document, fully supported devices include
 - Chromecast 4th gen (Chromecast with Google TV, 4K or HD version)
 - Chromecast Ultra

While some older devices will work, not all of them will be able to do so.  From my own experiences with Chromecast, I know that my newer Android table works just fine doing this with our living room TV, but my spouse's older device does not.

Can you tell us the make and model of your TV and the devices you are trying to cast 'from' ?  This may help us to further diagnose and troubleshoot this with you.

tv is a Sony bravia 8 II 4k oled bought last September.  casting devices are a Samsung galaxy s7 plus tablet (fairly old) and Samsung galaxy s24 phone.

So those should be compatible with each other, especially since you are able to do the same thing with other applications like HBO Max and Peacock.  Just to clarify you stated that the ability to select your TV doesn't show up in the Xfinity Stream app (meaning it doesn't show as available to cast to?)

Have you tried the Smart View from the S24 - swipe down on the phone / select smart view / and send the whole phone screen to the TV?   (That could function as a workaround - however the caveat is any notifications that come up on your phone while casting would also show on the TV.)

correct.  with other apps it will say cast to living room tv.  with the stream app it just says make sure your devices are on the same wifi network.

hadn't heard of smart view before.  just tried it and it doesn't work.  it does seem to work in general, but if you use the stream app it says screen mirroring is not available and use chromecast instead.

Thank you for this additional information and giving the Smart View a try. Try troubleshooting steps from the Chromecast Help Center, from this link here: https://support.google.com/chromecast

also, I don't try to cast from xfinity too often as I generally just watch on the tv.  but I've had a few instances where programs I recorded either had some signal issue on the tv (usually involving the food network) or were interrupted by an internet outage or power outage (a few days ago my power went out so the first half of my recorded program was missed but was available on the stream app).  in those cases I'll watch the recorded program from the app.
