Volume Fluctuations

I've had X1 for several years.  Worked fine.  I wanted to add Peacock last year to watch the Tour de France so I had to get a new model of X1 box to support that.  Ever since installing the new X1 box I have inconsistent volume.  Most channels are fine most of the time.  But some channels are way lower volume and some will be way louder.  Also commercials frequently have low volume.  I will be watching a show and the volume is fine and as soon as a commercial comes on, the volume will drop to super low.  Then sometimes the next commercial will also be low or sometimes it will be normal volume.  The volume never changes in the middle of a show or in the middle of a commercial.  It is always just as a commercial starts or ends.  Most times a channel that has  volume different than most will be lower than most of the others but sometimes I'll be changing channels and a channel will have way louder volume than the others.

I understand some shows have their volume mixed a little higher or lower.  This is not that.

This NEVER happened with the old X1 box.  It started happening as soon as I installed the new box.  You might think low volume on commercials would be a good thing but the constant changing up and down of the volume level is rather annoying and the inconsistent volume from channel to channel is super annoying.

Please don't say that the volume is set when the programming is produced and sent out and the box doesn't change it.  I know that's the way it is supposed to be but my box definitely alters the volume.  I want to see if there is anything to check or update or change that might fix it before I just order a new box and send this one back.

Thanks!!

Thank you for reaching out to our community forums about this concern. This is definitely not the best viewing experience and we want to help make this right for you. Before we look into changing the box let's try a few steps and a little bit more information to help with this on our end.

Do you notice this is on the same channels/programs all the time or is it random?  Is this the only box this happens on? (if you have more than one box)

@XfinityEva

It is random and seems to show up occasionally on any channel I'm watching.  It is very odd that the low volume is always on an entire commercial.  It never fluctuates during the middle of a commercial.  As an example, in a set of commercials during a break, there may be 1 quiet and 3 normal.  Or 2 and 2.  Or any combination.  It happens during on-demand as well.  Actually, I'm currently watching Riverdale and just as usual, some commercials are low volume.

Thank you so much for those additional details as it is definitely helpful for troubleshooting! Do you know what channels you notice this on the most and how long you have noticed them?

The volume fluctuations appear to be on all channels and have occurred since I got this new box.  It is quite obviously the box but just not sure if it is something that can be fixed remotely or if I need to get a fresh box and send this one back.  I do know this box was not new when I received it.  It had some random name when I first started using it.  Something like "Bedroom 2" or something.  Anyway, it had been used by at least one other user.  Yes, I know this is normal and the boxes are recycled.

Hello!

I am having the same issue. For the most part, the volume is consistent while the show is playing but then drops as soon as a commercial comes on. When the show resumes, the volumes comes back. That said, I have noticed the volume fluctuating *during* NFL broadcasts on CBS, NBC, ESPN, and Fox. The volume of the announcers is typically consistent throughout the broadcast, but the crowd noise and volume of the referee's voice (e.g. when announcing penalties) are barely audible.

My current setup is Xfinity 4k box to an Onkyo AV receiver via hi-speed HDMI; then the Onkyo to 4k TV via hi-speed HDMI. It's important to note that I had this exact same setup with a previous (non-4k) Xfinity box and did not have this problem.

I get the same results on each of the audio out settings on the Xfinity 4k box (stereo, expert mode, etc.), and also while using the audio return channel. How do I fix this?

Hi user_cd07e9, do you have this issue on any other equipment? Have you tried swapping the box out for a new one?

Thanks for the heads up, @jrbrown00. Have you attempted any troubleshooting for this so far? If so, what have you attempted? Do you notice this on certain channels? If so, which ones are you seeing it on?

thebeans66, I have the same audio problem. Did you get it resolved? If so can you tell me how? Comcast tech just left, couldn't fix the problem, blamed it software changes and suppose to have upgraded the service call. I doubt it.
