Unusable DVR Sporting Event recordings

The X1 DVR records sports events by program ID without honoring local-market availability, language, or blackout status, resulting in unusable recordings.

Can we please get modern recording options?

I have my DVR set up to record certain sports teams.  But sometimes it will record the game on the NBA TV or NFL TV channel which is blacked out because the game is on the local market channel. So I get 3 hours of a message that says the game is not available on this channel. Last night it recorded a game on Telemundo so the broadcast was in Spanish.

The only options available to me are “Airing Type” which is Live games / Live events, and “Channels” which is the HD/SD option.

EmmexPlusbee Thank you for reaching out! When you select the local market channel for recording do you still have the blackout.

I can not select a specific channel for recording. I used to be able to select "this channel only" but that option is no longer there. As I said in my post, when I select recording options the only things available to me are “Airing Type” which is Live games / Live events, and “Channels” which is the HD/SD option.

The DVR will record based on the program TV guide listings. Do you see the sports programming name available on the local channel when the content is blacked out on the NBA/NFL TV channels @EmmexPlusbee? You may need to select the local channel for recording.

Yes, I can see the sports programming name on the local channel. But that is not the point:

I should be able to set the recording for just the local channel: set and forget.

It is not practical to search up every time the program is also on other channels. If the solution is to just manually select the individual recordings on the local channel, there is no point in having a series recording option.

There used to be a "record this channel only" option. Can you please bring that back.

EmmexPlusbee We certainly appreciate your feedback. This feature is working as intended, but we welcome feedback so that we can improve the experience for you and others with similar concerns in the future.

Thanks for the reply. I understand that the current behavior is considered “working as intended,” but the issue is that the DVR frequently records broadcasts that are not viewable in the customer’s market, resulting in unusable recordings.

For example, when I set a team recording for the Boston Celtics, the X1 system sometimes records the NBA TV feed even though that feed is blacked out locally because the game is being broadcast on NBC Sports Boston. The result is a three-hour recording consisting entirely of a blackout message.

In other cases the system records alternate-language feeds (e.g., Telemundo) even though an English-language broadcast is available on the local rights holder.

From the user’s perspective, this means the DVR fails to deliver the program that was requested. A team recording should prioritize:
1. A broadcast that is viewable in the user’s market
2. The primary rights-holding local channel
3. The default language feed

Is there a way for this issue to be logged with the X1 product team as a recording-selection problem rather than a feature request? I suspect many local sports viewers encounter the same situation when games have multiple simultaneous broadcasts.
