Older person cannot upgrade
My mother is 95 and half blind, she can use the remote that is with the old cable box. If I put the upgrade on it will only confuse her, she is too old to learn new things much less see them to use them. She is content to watch (listen to )her QVC and Hallmark, I am not putting the upgrade on and causing her distress.

I don't know if this would help, but the upgraded box has a setting to turn on a narrator ("Voice Guidance" in the settings) which will say aloud the choices on the screen.
To change channels she would just need to hold the voice button and say "Hallmark" or "QVC".
I do appreciate the difficulties with change as we all get older!

She is familiar with the old remote. I will not upgrade and inconvenience her. There comes a time when you do NOT CHANGE things for a 95 year old person.

The old remote should still work. The X1's still support IR, and the command codes are the same except for some really ancient boxes that were replaced when Comcast updated to MPEG4 compression. I even have one of the old silver remotes with the gray/white/red buttons, and it works with an XG1v4.

@andyross , I would like to use my old silver remote with the gray/white/red buttons. Were steps required to "set-up" the old remote or did it work "out of the box"?
