LG TV with magic remote - won't control Sony Receiver and LG TV

SO I've seen other posts discussing this, but the fixes suggested didn't work for me. Open to input from the community.

Situation: I have a LG TV with the magic remote and audio via an older Sony receiver. X1 with XR15 model remote. Old system (X1 and XR11) worked fine controlling all components. Replacing the system with the newer remote and I have an either or option.

Whichever I pair last can be powered off. I have tried all the Sony and LG remote codes on the remote pairing help for my brands. When I am in the situation where I can power off and control volume on the Sony, I can still use the tv input button so I know the code is saved properly, but the power button only turns off the Sony. When the last code entered is the LG TV, I can power off the TV, but no controls work for the Sony.

Any suggestions beyond what I have tried? I have also done the setup walkthrough which did detect the LG TV and walked me thru Sony receiver setup until I found the first function code. Same issue.

Greetings, @HRcolorado! I hope your week has been treating you well. Thanks so much for taking a moment out of your busy day to leave a post on our community forum. I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with your remote setup, but you have definitely come to the right place for assistance.

I have actually had the same sort of issues with my own setup, using a Sharp TV and a Yamaha receiver for audio. When I had the XR15, it seemed to be a little more difficult to control the power function, compared to my old XR11. I don't think I ever identified the issue as well as you did in this post, but I think you may be onto something.

Do you still have your old XR11 remote by any chance, or did you turn it in when you upgraded your cable equipment? I would be interested to hear if the issue was resolved by putting everything back on the old remote.

@XfinityJamesC - I do have my old 11 remote, but it doesn't work with the new box. I haven't done a lot of research, but I've learned the X1 box is in RF mode and I don't see a way to change it in the Menu. There has to be a way to pair a different remote but my guess is that it only pairs one remote at a time (purely a guess).

If I can switch it over to IR mode, I think I will be all set with the other functions as my 11 does still have the programming on my IR controls for the LG TV and the Sony Receiver.

At some point, I'll take a deep dive on this. So far, everything I've read does NOT align with the menus I have on my X1 box. A Caavo help doc references an option in the Remote Settings menu to swap out the mode but I have no such option. My worry is that XF has "upgraded" the X1 box to only RF.

@XfinityJamesC - Found joy!

I was able to pair the remote using this process: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/remote-program-the-xr2-or-xr5-to-aim-anywhere?view=app

After running through the pairing, I have two remotes XR11 and XR15 that can control the X1 box. My XR11 controls everything as desired. My XR15 only controls the Sony Receiver and NOT the LG TV.

It is clearly an issue with the programming of the XR15 itself, but as long as I have a working XR11 remote, I'm good.

So my suggestion to you would be to swap the 15 for an 11 if you are in this situation.

Glad you found something that can work. I had the same issue with a sound bar and TV. I could control both with older set up, but not with XR15. I tried everything! Seems that some just conflict or need updates in the system for pairing.

I no longer work for Comcast.
