Broadcast TV on new X1 XG1v4 looks terrible. Older 1080p box picture quality was much better. Can this product actually upscale?

Does the Xfinity X1 XG1v4 upscale broadcast television? I switched over to a Xfinity X1 XG1v4 box from an older HD box to take advantage of the 4K capabilities.

After going into the display settings and switching the output resolution to 16:9, 2160p60 4K UHD(Best Available), I began watching broadcast television. Picture looks washed out, a bit grainy, and overall poor.

I have an LG G2 with a Rocket Fish certified 4K UHD HDMI cable from Best Buy. My older Xfinity box that was only capable of 1080p would output a significantly better picture quality when watching broadcast. Comparing the two boxes, the new X1 set at the 4K output resolution displays below average broadcast picture while my old box's output of broadcast seemed much closer to HD.

I understand I'm not getting a 4K signal from Comcast, but the box doesn’t seem to help, if it all(a hindrance if anything), beyond 4K streaming through Xfinity apps(have not used or tested). I don’t care about that aspect of the box as I do all my streaming through my television apps with obviously breathtaking results.

So, can this box actually upscale or make broadcast television slightly better than my previous 1080p display(which wasn’t that bad on new television) or is this really just for use with Xfinity app streaming and their limited 4K content? Because from my experience, it’s a hard no.

If you are talking about linear cable, Comcast is only supplying a 720p signal at best. They also changed the output of over the air 1080I channels to a 720p signal. That creates an inferior signal compared to over the air signals. I would set the box to 1080p and let your television do the upscaling.

For steaming 4K HDR you can compare a 4k program using the television's app for "You Tube" versus Comcast's 4K streaming service.

I suspect the Comcast signal may look inferior.
