How do I activate streaming apps?
What You Need to Know
- The Xfinity Stream app activation starts with downloading the app and signing in with your Xfinity ID and password.
- Most devices follow the same activation process, but a few have platform-specific exceptions.
- On partner devices, you must accept the Terms of Activation.
- On X1, Xumo Stream Box, and Flex, the Xfinity Stream experience is built in — no separate download required.
General Activation Process
This is the general process to activate Xfinity Stream. Follow these steps on any device, then check the platform-specific exceptions below if needed.
- Confirm your service is active. Make sure your Xfinity Internet and/or TV services are installed and activated.
- Download the Xfinity Stream app from your device's app store
- Open the app and sign in with your Xfinity ID and password, this is the key step that links the device to your account .
- Accept the Terms of Activation if prompted (primarily on partner devices like Roku).
- Start streaming.
For the web portal, skip the download and go to xfinity.com/stream, sign in with your Xfinity ID and password, and your computer is registered to your account during sign-in.
Platform-specific exceptions
The steps below cover Roku activation, Apple TV activation, and Fire TV activation.
Roku
- Open the Xfinity Stream app from the Xfinity Channel in the Roku Channel Store (find it on your Roku home screen under Streaming Channels).
- Select Sign In.
- The Terms of Activation will load. Scroll to read them, then select Yes to accept and continue. (Selecting No Thanks restarts activation.)
Apple TV
- Download the Xfinity Stream app from the App Store on your Apple TV.
- Open the app and select Sign In.
- Follow the on-screen prompts (web or QR code options) to complete activation. Important: The Xfinity Stream app on Apple TV only works when connected to your in-home Xfinity network. It won't work on another network, including XfinityWiFi hotspots or any "XFINITYwifi" network available in your home. Xfinity On Campus customers must be on their campus WiFi .
Amazon Fire TV
- Create an Amazon account and link it to your compatible Fire TV device (if you haven't already).
- Download the Xfinity Stream app from the Amazon Appstore.
- Open the app and sign in with your Xfinity ID and password.
LG and Samsung Smart TVs:
Activation is handled through the Xfinity Stream app on these specific TVs. See Xfinity's dedicated smart TV activation article for step-by-step instructions.
Please note: LG TVs, Samsung Smart TVs, and Apple TV devices are not eligible to stream NOW TV and NOW TV Latino content.
X1, Xumo Stream Box, or Flex
The Xfinity Stream experience is built in; no separate app download needed. Use the Xfinity button on your remote to access Apps, Live TV, On Demand, and more.
How do I watch before my equipment arrives?
What You Need to Know
- You don't have to wait for your Stream Box or TV equipment to arrive to start watching.
- You can start streaming before your equipment arrives using the Xfinity Stream app or web portal.
- Amazon Fire TV works before service activation; Roku, LG, and Samsung require your Xfinity services to be fully activated first
- Some features and channels may not be available until your service is fully activated.
How it works:
- Sign in with the Xfinity ID you'll use after activation.
- Download the Xfinity Stream app on a supported device or open the web portal.
- Follow the in-app prompts to sign in and start streaming.
Device differences for pre-activation streaming:
- Amazon Fire TV: You can access the Xfinity Stream app on Fire TV devices before your services are activated.
- LG, Roku, and Samsung devices: These cannot stream live or On Demand content until your Xfinity TV services have been installed and activated.
- Apple TV: You cannot use the Xfinity Stream app before your professional installation.
Troubleshooting activation issues
What You Need to Know
- Most activation issues stem from device incompatibility, being on the wrong network, multiple linked accounts, or an app that needs updating.
- If you find Xfinity Stream not working, start with the general steps, then check the specific error you're seeing.
- The Xfinity app offers 24/7 real-time support, bill pay, plan details, and outage updates.
General troubleshooting steps
Start here for any activation or streaming issue:
- Confirm your service is active. Make sure installation and activation of your Xfinity products is complete and your bill is paid.
- Check device compatibility. Verify that you have a supported device model and the minimum required firmware/app version.
- Check your connection. Confirm your device is connected to your Xfinity Internet service (for in-home features).
- Update the app. Make sure you're running the latest version of the Xfinity Stream app from your app store.
- Restart and reinstall. Power-cycle your device, uninstall the app, restart, and reinstall the latest version.
- If you recently moved. Sign out of the Xfinity Stream app on your partner device and re-install the app after activating service at your new address.
Common Activation Errors
TVAPP-00101
Symptom: You see "Welcome! This device can only access Xfinity Stream on your in-home Xfinity WiFi. Use the app on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop to watch on the go any time you like. Error TVAPP-00101."
Cause: The app can't confirm that you're on your in-home Xfinity network. The most common cause is having two or more linked Xfinity accounts, so the device is trying to activate the wrong account. On Apple TV, it can also appear even when you are on a Xfinity network, because the app requires your in-home network specifically — it won't work on XfinityWiFi hotspots or "XFINITYwifi" networks.
Resolution:
- For multiple linked accounts: Go to customer.xfinity.com/settings/account/linked-accounts → select the account you want to activate from → choose Make This Primary. See "How to link, unlink and switch between multiple accounts" for setting the right default/primary account.
- For Apple TV: Confirm you're connected to your in-home Xfinity network (not a hotspot or "XFINITYwifi" network). If you're a Xfinity On Campus customer, you must be on campus WiFi .
TVAPP-00195
Symptom: You see "This package is not yet available on this device" when trying to watch on your TV, even though you can watch on your mobile device, Xumo Stream Box, or tablet.
Cause: The device you're using may not be compatible with your current Xfinity package or may not meet the minimum system requirements for the Xfinity Stream app.
Resolution: Check the Xfinity Stream app minimum system requirements to confirm your device is compatible. If it isn't, switch to a supported device or use the Xfinity Stream app on a mobile device or the web portal.
Authorization Page Issues
Symptom: When you visit xfinity.com/authorize to enter your activation code, the page shows "null" labels and won't link the device to your account. This has been reported on Apple TV and TCL TVs. A related error reads "Thank you for being an Xfinity Customer. Unfortunately, we cannot support high speed data customers without a video subscription."
Cause: The authorization page may fail to load correctly or your account may be internet-only. If you only pay for Xfinity Internet without a traditional TV package, access to certain live TV streaming features or apps may be blocked.
Resolution:
- Try a different browser or device to complete activation.
- Confirm that your Xfinity service includes a video subscription. Internet-only accounts cannot activate the Xfinity Stream app on partner TV devices — you would need to add a TV package.
- Clear your browser cookies and retry.
Login Loops
Symptom: You sign in to the Xfinity Stream app, see "success," then get a black screen with a notice that you must use a Xfinity network, even though you are on one. The app loops back to the sign-in screen.
Cause: A corrupted session or a network recognition issue preventing the app from confirming your in-home connection.
Resolution:
- Uninstall the Xfinity Stream app, restart your device, and reinstall the latest version.
- Confirm that you are connected to your in-home Xfinity network (not a hotspot).
- If the loop persists, sign out of all devices from your Xfinity account settings and reactivate.
Access Denied
Symptom: You see "You don't have permission to access 'http://login.xfinity.com/login' on this server" or "Access denied" when trying to log in, commonly on iPads and mobile devices.
Cause: A security firewall is temporarily blocking the connection between your device and the login server, often due to network settings, VPNs, or privacy tools.
Resolution:
- Disable VPNs and privacy tools. Turn off any VPN or iCloud Private Relay, which can mask your location and trigger security blocks.
- Toggle your WiFi. Briefly turn off WiFi and try logging in over a cellular connection or a different network to bypass a temporary IP block.
- Reinstall the app. Delete the Xfinity Stream app, restart your device, and download the latest version.
- Clear browsing data. Clear your browsing history/cookies for Xfinity on your device.
Entitlement Issues
Symptom: A subscription included in your bundle (like StreamSaver) — Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, or HBO Max — will not activate, or the app keeps asking you to subscribe even though you are subscribed.
Cause: The entitlement (the signal that tells the app you have an active subscription) has not been properly provisioned or sent to the app, or you are using the wrong Xfinity ID.
Resolution:
- Visit xfinity.com/yoursubscriptions and click Activate next to the service.
- If you see "Something unexpected happened" or the Activate button does not work, wait, and retry, or try activating from the link in your activation email.
- For HBO Max, always use your Primary Xfinity ID — secondary IDs will not work.
- If activation still fails, contact Xfinity support and ask for an App Entitlement Refresh (also called refreshing the entitlement or resending the activation signal) for the specific subscription.
"Access but not authorized"
Symptom: You see "Access but not authorized" when opening Xfinity Stream on a new device, such as a new Roku TV.
Cause: The device cannot verify your subscription or in-home network status.
Resolution: Work through the general troubleshooting steps above, then confirm your account includes a video subscription and that the device is on your in-home Xfinity network.
