How to Connect External Stereo Speakers to TV/Cable Box with Volume Control Through Xfinity Remote

I have a pair of powered stereo speakers I'd like to use in lieu of the tiny, poor sounding TV speakers. I've tried optical connections to dac and then the speakers. It works, but I cannot control the volume with either the tv or the Xfinity cable box remote. I would like to connect the speakers to a HDMI ARC Extractor like this one. However, the Xfinity cable box occupies the only HDMI ARC connection of the TV. And I believe the Xfinity cable box requires the HDMI ARC connection so that the Xfinity remote works - is this correct? I tried switching the HDMI cable to a non-ARC HDMI connection on the TV, but I couldn't even turn in the TV with the remote. If I can connect the cable box to a non-ARC HDMI connection on the TV I think I have my problem solved. Is a non-ARC HDMI connection on the TV with the Xfinity cable box, while retaining the Xfinity remote control? If not, and the Xfinity cable box must utilize the ARC-HDMI connection on the TV, how can I connect my stereo speakers to the TV AND control the volume with the Xifinty remote? Is it even possible?

Hello @wacomme

Thank you for taking the time to make this post for our Xfinity Community Forums! All great questions! You can use speakers with your Xfinity set-up, however, the external speakers would need to be connected to your TV, not the cable box. Once finished the Xfinity remote will control the volume on your TV, which speaks to and controls the speakers.

Depending on the type of TV and speakers you have, there can be a number of ways to connect the sound, i.e. Bluetooth, HDMI, or aux. The real question here is whether your TV is compatible with your speakers. If you only have an HDMI option and the TV does not have enough HDMI ports, it may be time to upgrade.

I hope this helps!
