What's the Target partner scam?

As for Xfinity not controlling its customer data, I have a feeling the scammers are just cold calling people without knowing what their cable provider is. I have gotten a few calls with a female voice claiming to be from Xfinity and promising to lower my bills, but I have also gotten calls about AT&T and Dish.

What's the Target partner scam?

See https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/billing/scam-offering-xfinity-promotion/6393d2a6ebc7551628353d21 for just one example. In that case and in many others posted here in the Forums:

... the scammer new all the details about my account and how much my current and prior bill were in addition to other information about my account ...

Hi, I just had a recent experience and only luckily avoided falling for it.

I got the scammer's call while I was on a retreat in the Catskills of NY. The caller (he gave the name Mr John at some point) seemed to know things about me to verify. I may have given him my street address. He said I was one of 10,000 customers to receive this special promotion. If I would purchase a Target gift card and add $300 on it, I would get Xfinity services for $25/month and not have to pay any monthly Xfinity fee until June 2024 ($25/month for 12 months). Thereafter I would only pay $25/month for the next 24 months. I could not get to a Target store so he suggested i try to purchase one from the Target website. He said that after I purchased it, all I had to do was call the Xfinity billing department at [Edited: "Personal Information"] and give them my authorization number XFI833.

Luckily for me, Target would only allow me to use a debit card and I only had a credit card as I didn't travel with the debit card, so I couldn't purchase the gift card. I called Mr John back (he had given me a number to call in case I had a problem) at [Edited: "Personal Information"], extension 807. He said, ok that he would keep the offer open until I could get to a Target store on Friday. However, I wasn't sure I could get to a Target store by close of business on Friday EST so he said he would extend the offer until Monday if necessary and even gave me a 'direct number' for the billing department in case I couldn't get through on the 877 number. That direct number is [Edited: "Personal Information"]. I did manage to get to a Target store yesterday afternoon. I asked a clerk how did this gift card thing work and that's when she informed me it was a scam. That was a long way down the rabbit hole to find this out!

Anyway, today I received a number of calls from [Edited: "Personal Information"](3 calls) and [Edited: "Personal Information"] (4 calls) - which I suspected were from Mr John trying to follow up on getting me to purchase the card. I tried calling those numbers from a landline phone and sure enough, both numbers had the recorded greeting in a woman's voice "Thank you for calling Xfinity. All of our representatives are assisting other callers..."

I blocked those numbers. I have provided all the numbers to you in the hopes that someone can track down and stop these scammers. I tried to find a way to report them on the Xfinity site but could not find a way to do so.

@Kiran108 I am so sorry to hear this happened. This is a known scam and I am just glad you found out it was a scam before giving them money. In the future, you can go here and click on Alerts at the top of the screen to see what scams are going on. You can also report any scams there as well. Thank you for letting us know this happened.

I no longer work for Comcast.

Got this call also. What is alarming is they knew what my monthly bill was and they were even able to post a credit on MyAccount for one month. Very concerned about my personal information.

If you have gotten a call claiming to be from Comcast asking you to buy gift cards or paying upfront for six months or more in exchange for 50% off your bill the FTC is well aware of this scam.  If you get a call like this you can report it to:     https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/
Please help to stop the spread of this kind of fraud.
Thanks!

I also got a call about the Target scam. They were going to reduce my bill to $155/mo if I paid the first five months up front AND waive my payment due July 4th. Initially excited as my bill is over the top high but eventually did not fall for it. The scary thing is they were adjusting Xfinity's billing page and text system! Please figure out a way to stop this. The original phone number was a Utica, NY number [Edited: "Personal Information"] and asked top call [Edited: "Personal Information"]

Your post was made private because you posted phone numbers that are scam numbers.  While we understand you wanting to alert people we just can't allow those numbers to be made public.

I've been getting lots of calls from these same scammers in the last week.

Comcast, do you understand that you have had a major data breach of customer account information? The scammers have account holders' names, account numbers, balances due and due dates. These are not individual hacks of usernames/passwords. This is a hack of Comcast billing systems. Are you going to report it and do something about it?

how do I report this to Xfinity.  I almost fell for it yesterday.  I have the phone numbers to report.  I also am concerned they have my personal information.   I need to know if I need to take any steps.   This scam seems fairly sophisticated.

@user_e089e9 - if the phone number is local to you, there is a very good chance it is fake. The scammers can trick the phone system into showing a fake number, for two main reasons: (a) to make you think it is local, so you will answer the phone, and (b) so you can't call them right back or report the number to anybody. The calls are almost certainly coming from India, where there is not much that Comcast can do about them (otherwise they would have done it by now).

I have had two people call me, and the first words out of their mouths were, "Who are you?" - because they thought I was a scammer, as they saw my phone number.
