Target Gift Card Scam

I was a victim of the Target scam last night and realized it too late.  They mirrored my account and supposedly "paid" my current bill.  I am out a lot of money and am mortified that I actually fell for this.  It has to be an inside job because they had all of my info and I was getting text messages exactly like ones I've received in the past.  I would like to talk to someone about this.  Please advise who I can report the incident to?

Thank you

Have you gotten a call claiming to be from Comcast asking you to buy gift cards or paying upfront for six months or more in exchange for 50% off your bill?  If so, the FTC is well aware of this scam.  If you get a call like this you can report it to     https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/
Please help to stop the spread of this kind of fraud.
Thanks!

I was also a victim of the Target scam and also realized when it was too late.  I fell for it because they had access to my account information.  I did not provide them with my information.  So I agree with the other comments that this is an inside job, or someone has sold personal information to the scammers.  I too am out alot of money.  On top of this fake promotion, I received a similar offer by Xfinity sales promotion, partnering with Target and AT&T.  My cell phone bill was likewise zeroed out for the month.  That person with Xfinity billing was "Kevin Thomas."  I was told by "Kevin" there was a transaction error with the gift cards and was instructed to purchase more gift cards and I would be reimbursed for the first set that produced the error.  At this point, I knew it was a scam and I too was mortified that I fell for it.  By the time I realized this was a scam, I was out another great deal of money and my bank shut down my debit cards for suspicious activity.  The reason that this promotion seemed real was because they had access to my accounts and my information - my name, address, billing amounts and everything. I told "Kevin," who was later calling himself "Mark," that I would not go forward with the so-called promotion, he began yelling at me and sent me a threatening text.  They also directed another $400 payment to Xfinity from my bank account, and I received a text from Xfinity that $400 was paid toward my account.  I also received a threatening text saying that my credit would be ruined, I would be fined $1500, and my social security benefits would be revoked.  I had to open a new bank account because these people are still accessing my information. I spoke with Xfinity Security on 11/12/22 and was given an ticket number.  I was also told there were another $200 and $300 payments pending on my account that would come from my bank account.  The Security rep cancelled those payments.  I have yet to hear from anyone regarding the incident.  I filed complaints with the Attorney General, FTC, my local police, and the Better Business Bureau.  I was advised to also file a report with the FBI, which I have done.

We are truly sorry that you had to go through this @user_536759. All of these would be handled by our Customer Security Assurance team, which based on your response, you have already worked with. You would just continue to work with them and the ticket number the provided you, and they will be able to get to the bottom of this for you.

Sam thing happened to me sadly. Xfinity has been hacked, we should see something come out here publicly. They had all of my details and their hold music and prompts were the same. It seems to be a pretty well thought out scam and hack

I have talked to customer assurance and Xfinity security. From what I can tell, there is nothing being done other than Xfinity saying "sorry this happened to you.' This scam has caused so many problems for us. Worried that they had my personal information, we changed our bank account number and canceled our credit cards.  I have reported it to the FTC, FBI, attorney general, filed a police report, and reported fraud to the credit agencies.

Since it seems to be pretty widespread, am wondering if anyone has heard anything about a class action lawsuit? I would be interested in pursuing one.

The same thing happened to me last night.  I can't believe I fell for this because I usually am good at not falling for these scams.  But like everyone else they had my account information, how much I pay each month and supposedly paid my December bill.  After I made the payment today, there was supposedly a technical issue and I need to purchase a new gift card and then they will refund me my original gift cards.  That's when it clicked and I argued with them and they threatened to suspend by services or shut them off in 3 hours.  I did contact Xfinity to let them know them and I tried contacting Target.  Unfortunately the cards have been used already and they can't issue a refund but they made a report about what happened.  I am so upset about this.  How they can send texts, emails, have access to my account information, and a phone line that has Xfinity information.

@user_186bb9 That's exactly how I got scammed.  I was also told there was a "technical issue" with the gift cards and was told I would need to purchase more and would be reimbursed for the money I spent for the gift cards.  They even knew the exact store I purchased them from.  It clicked for me too, and I knew then that I had been scammed.  They sent me threatening texts, and a week later our service was cut off.  I had it turned back on but then was charged reconnect fees and returned check fees, as they got back the payment they made for my November bill.  They also tried to have another $900 go to Xfinity from my bank account. I believe this was in retaliation because I didn't continue with purchasing additional gift cards. I stopped the payments had to change our bank account number and cancel our debit card.  When I called Xfinity about this so-called sales promotion, I was told by a rep that there was a "50/50 chance it was real."  They put me through to Security and I relayed all the details, and my issue was supposedly elevated.  I never heard from anyone so called back a number of times and had to go over everything each time.  Ultimately I went down to the Xfinity office and spoke with a billing rep. The billing rep said he didn't think the security techs I had spoken with over the phone understood the problem (after all, they are all foreigners).  I was credited the reconnect and returned check fees and  they again elevated the issue, as I was not confident that my account was secure. After about a week of not hearing back, I followed up and got a call back from a security expert, who had me change my password (again) and explained that anyone can access my bill with a phone number and address.  I don't recall every providing my address, however.

I have filed a police report, as well as reports with FTC, FBI, Attorney General, and a fraud complaint with the Better Business Bureau.  The Better Business Bureau has called and written to me for additional information.  This is a huge scam has been an absolute nightmare!

One BIG scam and Xfinity/Comcast does NOTHING. This is HUGE - they were hacked or it's an inside job. Typical Comcast does nothing. Time to cut the cord!!!

You will not receive any assistance, xfinity/Comcast must be in financial trouble and have adopted this fraudulent scheme as policy in order to bolster profitability. I have been to a store, talked to many reps on the phone, and they know it is happening but don’t care.

I had just received a Comcast free phone on signing up for two mobile lines. Then I got a call from Comcast offering me $150pm for 4 services guaranteed for 4 years, plus a free phone, if I pre-paid the first year ($1,800) with Target gift cards, the joint promoter. After several "did not go through" cards and delays in getting my wife's phone and service, I ended up getting scammed for $6,000.

@XfinityPeterH  It is not the customer's responsibility to alert the public about this scam.  Xfinity should have sent out a warning to all of its customers via email or text months ago.  Customers are still being victimized by this, and it's hard to believe Xfinity/Comcast has benefitted in some way.

Not sure what your attorney is going to accomplish.  Unless you opted out, you agreed to arbitration.  But, since the FTC is aware and is investigating, you might want to wait and see.

Plus, have you ever heard of "caveat emptor"?  If not, you might want to look it up.

We were just contacted by text message on a phone not associated with our Comcast account. When we called the number in Arlington, TX, they seemed to have a lot of information about our Comcast account. Have they hacked into the Comcast database? What other information has been compromised?
