Confused about passwords to use when Comcast emails are "migrated" to Yahoo

I received the invite to move to Yahoo and I am reviewing the instructions at

 https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN36803.html

Part of the initial steps for migration is creating a NEW STRONG PASSWORD

  • One has to sign in at yahoo.com with one’s full Comcast.net email address and password
  • as shown in first video https://s.aolcdn.com/membership/help/000015905/xfinitymovetoyahoomail.mp4

at minute 1:30, one is directed to create a “new strong password for your account”.

Question:  What is this password for and when is this password supposed to be used? Is this a new password for the Yahoo email account being migrated from Comcast?? Does this mean that once this is entered, this password needs to be used for any future access for this email account, INCLUDING when adding Yahoo mail to Apple Mail on a Mac?   I am confused by the many different passwords during this transition, as later on I am told that one has to also create an App password for Apple mail (NOT icloud mail which I do NOT use). Can someone please help and clarify what the "new strong password" is for vs. the one time "app password" for Apple Mail?   I hope that I will be notified if an answer will be posted. Thanks.

Good afternoon user_r4rfzq! You would log in with your current existing Xfinity email, and you current email password for the transition. Please let us know if you require additional assistance, or have additional questions.

XfinityJohn, your answer has NOTHING to do with my questions. Please look at the links and at the questions and don't just waste your time and my time. if Comcast is getting rid of us, if nothing else, it should provide adequate help to migrate us over. This is not "assistance".

Once the new strong password is created that would be for your Comcast email under the new Yahoo format. If you were to log into any third-party mail applications like Outlook, Mail for Apple, or Mail for Android that would be the password you would use to log your Comcast email into those apps. Please let me know if this helps.

Thanks, this sounds much better. I will repeat what I understand from you.

1. The new strong password I am instructed to create will be used to login into my "Comcast email under the new Yahoo format" after the migration to Yahoo was executed. I will no longer use my present password for the Comcast account, it will be replaced by this new strong password that I have to create. I will have to create a new strong password to access "Comcast email under the new Yahoo format" for each email account now I have with Comcast.

2. Until now, when I setup Apple mail on my Mac, when I was asked to enter the password for the email account setup with Comcast, I did enter the same password that I entered for webmail in Comcast. After the migration, when I will setup the Yahoo account in Apple mail, I will have to use the new strong password I created (as described above).

3. I do not have to generate and use a one time 3rd party app password; no need for it in order to continue getting my emails in Apple mail for all my Comcast email addresses as until now.

Please confirm that the above is correct. Thanks.

Hey there that all does sound correct. The new strong password you create will take the place of the one you have been using, and you will use that when logging into your Comcast email at Yahoo, or on the Apps where you currently view your email.  You should not need a one-time password because the strong password would be the password you would use to set up your email again once migration has been successfully completed. Please let me know if this helps, and again we are here and happy to help if you have additional questions, or concerns. 😀

Thank you. Hopefully the migration will work out and mail will work without problems after the migration.  With 3 vendors in the loop, hopefully there will be no finger pointing and if problems happen, proper support will be available from each vendor, as we didn't ask for this migration. If I have other questions, I will return.

The video for setting up 3rd party email (e.g. Apple mail) provided by Comcast at

https://s.aolcdn.com/membership/help/000015905/xfinityaddtoapplemail.mp4

states that:

  • You'll see a screen to sign in to Yahoo. Enter your full Comcast.net email address (make sure to include the @comcast.net part) and then click Next.
  • Enter your Comcast.net email account password and then click Next.

Password: If your Comcast.net password does not work with your third-party email client, you may need to generate and use an app password. See the "How to generate an app password" section to learn how to get an app password.

Questions:

1. These instructions state that I should use the Comcast password (not the new strong password just generated). Which password should I use when setting up the Yahoo account in Apple Mail?

2. Why wouldn't the password work with the third-party email and where would I have to use the one time app password?

3. If an app password would be required, and I would use that in Apple mail when setting up the account, which password would I have to use for any next time when I would want to check my mail for this account in Yahoo (not Apple Mail).

Please clarify. Thanks.

@user_r4rfzq I am still a little confused....after the migration, are we going to have to go into the Apple mail settings

and change the outgoing and incoming mail passwords to the new stronger one?

tbill1, these instructions provided to us by Comcast are not clear, that's why I am asking the questions.

Hopefully Comcast support can clarify which passwords should be used where and answer my 3 above questions, answers required to understand how to setup Apple mail after this migration. I am sure there are many other Comcast customers who are equally confused.

Please address my specific questions AFTER reading the thread. if you will do that, you will see that the link you provided is the same one I started with.

Please do not ignore the fact that as I mentioned, the information provided by Comcast for this migration is confusing. Please do not send answers for the sake of providing an answer. READ the thread and clarify what I asked about the passwords to be used. If you do not know the answer, ask someone who knows.

WE CANNOT MIGRATE BY TRYING TO GUESS WHAT THE INSTRUCTIONS MEAN. Help was promised.

While I appreciate your answer, if you would have read the thread, you would have seen that XfinityJon already addressed the first batch of questions (that you addressed) and confirmed my understanding of his answers.

However, the next steps that focus of enabling 3rd party email (in my case Apple mail) to be used with the "Comcast email under the new Yahoo format" are equally confusing and conflict with  XfinityJon's answers. PLEASE READ THE THREAD AND ADDRESS the 3 questions in the message that starts with:

The video for setting up 3rd party email (e.g. Apple mail) provided by Comcast at

https://s.aolcdn.com/membership/help/000015905/xfinityaddtoapplemail.mp4

states that:

  • You'll see a screen to sign in to Yahoo. Enter your full Comcast.net email address (make sure to include the @comcast.net part) and then click Next.
  • Enter your Comcast.net email account password and then click Next.

Password: If your Comcast.net password does not work with your third-party email client, you may need to generate and use an app password. See the "How to generate an app password" section to learn how to get an app password.

user_r4rfzq, your questions were:

Questions:

1. These instructions state that I should use the Comcast password (not the new, strong password just generated). Which password should I use when setting up the Yahoo account in Apple Mail?

Answer: Use your original Comcast password during the initial Yahoo sign-in to accept terms, but for setting up Apple Mail, you'll likely need a special Yahoo "App Password," generated from your Yahoo account's security settings, because Xfinity/Yahoo now uses Yahoo security that requires unique passwords for third-party apps like Apple Mail.

2. Why wouldn't the password work with the third-party email, and where would I have to use the one-time app password?

Answer: Your Comcast password fails in third-party apps after migration because Yahoo Mail uses stricter security, requiring a special One-Time App Password (OTP) instead of your main password for apps like Outlook, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird; you generate this OTP in your Yahoo Account Security settings and enter it once in the app to grant access.

3. If an app password were required, and I would use that in Apple Mail when setting up the account, which password would I have to use the next time when I would want to check my mail for this account in Yahoo (not Apple Mail)?

Answer: When checking your migrated Comcast email on the Yahoo website (or any non-Apple Mail app), you'll use your regular, migrated Comcast/Yahoo password, not the special App Password; the App Password is only for older apps like Mac Mail that need it for security, while the Yahoo website recognizes your main login credentials.

In the context of your replies XfinityAngie, the prior answers provided by XfinityJon are incorrect ("The new strong password you create will take the place of the one you have been using, and you will use that when logging into your Comcast email at Yahoo, or on the Apps where you currently view your email.  You should not need a one-time password because the strong password would be the password you would use to set up your email again once migration has been successfully completed.").

Sorry, but not only the instructions that were provided are confusing, but also the answers one gets from those who are supposed to be experts and know it all are confusing. How do I know who is right or wrong who knows what they are talking about and who doesn't?

When I went through the migration, it did not prompt me for any one-time password. I clicked on the migration invitation in my Comcast email, and it guided me through the steps. i did have to create a new password under the Yahoo format, but was able to use the same password which I had been using all along. I just had to enter it under the Yahoo settings when moving over. When it came to setting up my Mail on my iPhone, you select Yahoo for your mail carrier instead of Other like we used to have to do. And you use the Password you provide when setting up the Yahoo account. Please let me know if this helps.

It is INCREDIBLY annoying to see how these different support people just start writing without bothering to read what another support staff already stated and the prior conversation. They just waste time. How about reading and answering questions? Without that THIS IS NOT AT ALL THE "PERFECT PLACE" TO GET HELP FOR THE YAHOO MAIL MIGRATION.

XfinityEmily, read the prior conversation before you joined, contradicting answers from your colleagues Jon and Angie, and provide clarification about which password has to be used where when setting up Apple mail for Yahoo. Correct answers instead of slogans would be helpful for me, tbill1 and many others.

Thank you. However, again, this is contradictory to what XfinityAngie stated. Could you please ask XfinityGabrielS  the following 3 questions and finally provide accurate answers.

1. which password should one use when configuring Apple Mail (on a Mac) for Yahoo: the "new strong password" or a one time, app password?

2. The instructions provided by Comcast for configuring Apple Mail for Yahoo state:

https://s.aolcdn.com/membership/help/000015905/xfinityaddtoapplemail.mp4

  1. Click Mail at the top of the screen | click Add Account.
  2. Choose Yahoo from the list of mail providers and then click Continue.
  3. You'll see a screen to sign in to Yahoo. Enter your full Comcast.net email address (make sure to include the @comcast.net part) and then click Next.
  4. Enter your Comcast.net email account password and then click Next.

Should we enter the new, strong password or the one time app password in step 4 above?

3. The instructions for generating an app password at

https://s.aolcdn.com/membership/help/000015905/xfinitygenapppwd.mp4

state the following:

  1. Sign in to your Yahoo Account Security page.
  2. Under "External connections," click Create app password.
  3. Enter your app's name in the text field.
  4. Click Generate password.
  5. Use the one-time password to log in to your 3rd party app
  6.                My note and question: There is no login for Apple Mail…..  Where exactly would I use this one time app password?????????????

We have limited support for 3rd party email clients such as Apple. You would setup your Apple mail with your comcast.net email address and the password created when migrating to Yahoo. Are you able to see your email on Yahoo? All steps for 3rd party email clients have been outlined in the documents that are being provided to you.

Some of your instructions (AND staff) state that "Enter your Comcast.net email account password and then click Next.". Others state that "Use the one-time password to log in to your 3rd party app" for the SAME step, when configuring Apple Mail for Comcast/Yahoo.  If you would read, you would see the same contradictory info at the links that you provided. You do not need to support 3rd party apps, only the interfacing between Comcast/yahoo mail and Apple mail. If you provided clear, easy to follow and consistent instructions, one would not have to ask questions and struggle through with the n+1 changing XfinitySTAFF's "help".

When you migrate to Yahoo, it will have you create a new strong password. This will be your password to log in with any email application or web portal. You will need to use your full comcast.net email address and use Yahoo Mail settings for any 3rd party apps. If you are still seeing an issue you will then need to reach out to Yahoo for support.

The migration barely started but here comes the fingerpointing. Comcast has nothing to do with this migration that all its users are clamoring for. Comcast will not be in the loop when Yahoo will kind of be the provider.

XfinityJanelle, just check what XfinityAngie replied to the same topic (if you do not have the time to check the links published by Comcast). Typical Comcast support, handing over the ball to each other with no proper resolution.

I see you had a few responses going back and forth with XfinityAngie, is this the message you are referring to:

"user_r4rfzq, I think I see where you were running into trouble. I am signing in on my laptop, not my phone. First, clicking on the link to migrate your email to Yahoo, it will ask you for your Comcast.net email address. Then it will have you update the password. Once you are through this, another Yahoo window pops up, and you will be directed to create a Strong password. Just enter the same one you already created in the previous step. That is where I was thrown off.

Your question was," What is this password for, and when is this password supposed to be used? Is this a new password for the Yahoo email account? Does this mean that once this is entered, this password needs to be used for any future access for this email account, INCLUDING when adding Yahoo Mail to Apple Mail on a Mac?

The answer is the new password is for your Yahoo email account, and you should be able to use it going forward when signing in. Let me know if this helps."

Or this one:

"Questions: 1. 2. The second one (with the 3 questions and answers (which contradicts the others' answers. With so many XfinityNAMEs involved, this got completely out of hand. Doesn't appear that anyone has a handle on this, it is just passed around like a hot potato, while stating that "you will then need to reach out to Yahoo for support", as Comcast has nothing to do with it.

Thanks, @again. I find it "interesting" that the listed providers based on email addresses at https://support.apple.com/en-us/102088 do not include Comcast and one is told : "For any other email address not listed above, choose the "Other" account option at the bottom of the list of providers, then follow the onscreen steps to manually set up your account. You might need to enter mail server addresses and other information, which you can get from your email provider.". This contradicts what's in the instructions provided by Comcast that states: "Choose Yahoo from the list of mail providers and then click Continue". Another contradiction.....  How can an end user determine which instructions are correct? Why cannot Comcast provide reliable instructions?

Can one of these XfinityNAMES provide a reliable answer about which provider to enter for Apple Mail (Yahoo or Other), after checking with the technical staff that had to test the steps for migration?

I'm only guessing here because I don't have Apple/Mac, but under Other you should probably choose Comcast since that is the email that is being migrated.  You are going from Comcast to Yahoo.

Apple Mail doesn't offer Comcast as an option for a provider (there are no options under Other) , so I cannot pick Comcast.

Quick question..I keep seeing "pick a strong password"  for Yahoo .  I feel I would half a chance of doing this if I could use

my same Comcast password for the migration as Xfinity Jon said he did. My Comcast password is letters and numbers. Does Yahoo require special characters besides

letters and numbers?  At the end of all this back and forth, I hope  2 things can be clarified for setting up apple mail on the MAC: do we use Other

or Yahoo and do we have to get a 1 time password-which seems complicated to me.

From what I found online @tbill1, Yahoo requires passwords to be at least 8 characters, mixing uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols, but strongly recommends longer passwords (12+ characters) with unique combinations, avoiding personal info, dictionary words, or keyboard patterns for better security.

@user_r4rfzq on webmail have you gotten the invitation to migrate to Yahoo! Mail?  I'm confused about that.

For those of you that are using Apple/Mac mail, have you already migrated to Yahoo! Mail?  If so, and you already generated your new password so that you can sign in at mail.yahoo.com using your full comcast.net email address and the new password, does it work?  That is the password you would use when setting up your ios device or your laptop.

You can find information on Yahoo's mail servers here:
I think this thread has gotten way more complicated than it needs to be.
I don't know if the above helps to straighten any of this out, but remember, you must sign in to your comcast.net account successfully at mail.yahoo.com with the new password before trying to set up any third party app.
And, once you have migrated, you'll need to get help from Yahoo.

@Again @haz10 @user_r4rfzq

For what it's worth to all of you---------I have (had) two Comcast email accounts.  The one I use for these forums I am keeping as a Comcast account until the end of the transition so I can keep helping with the old email format for those who still have it.

The other one I have migrated over to Yahoo.  I have an older iMac for my desktop computer.  But I don't use Mac Mail.  I use Mozilla Thunderbird for a desktop client.  When I did the migration of the Comcast account to the Yahoo one, it took maybe 10 minutes or so.  It went quite smoothly.

Now, with that migration completed---------it's not a Comcast email account any more----at that point you have a new Yahoo account with a Comcast email address.  That said, I had one problem when I tried to create the account in Thunderbird---------the incoming and outgoing server settings were wrong.  I let Thunderbird try to auto-configure it but it wouldn't work, so I tried setting it up manually.  What happened was that Thunderbird was looking at their database of information based on the Comcast email address instead of the Yahoo information.  So I manually typed in the Yahoo server names and then it worked just fine.

So my suggestion is to get the migration to Yahoo done first so you can at least access the account using the Yahoo webmail UI, then worry about whether or not you need an app specific password, or other client settings.  There are quite a few email clients out there that the Comcast employees in here may or may not be familiar with.

As an aside----most other ISPs that had their own in-house email accounts did away with them some time ago.  Comcast is the last major ISP I know of that still has (had) their own for this long.

I am still unsure as to set up. Apple mail for my MAC.  I watched the video for setting up Apple mail for the MAC

and it clearly states that you should select Yahoo for the provider.  Yet there are several agents in this thread

that say you should pick Other.  Which is it?
