NHL blackout?

I live about 3 hours from Philly. I have Xfinity and have Comcast SportsNet, NBC Sports Philly, etc as part of my regular sports cable channels. Why are Flyers games still blacked out on these stations for me? I get the RSN, so why does channel 847 just show a color-blocked screen for all Flyers games scheduled on there?

Hi @user_nhv6i6 Thank you for reaching out on the Xfinity Community Forums. We greatly appreciate you taking the time to reach out regarding the Flyers games. The games are listed as a ESPN+ streaming exclusive instead of being offered on live channels.

You are correct, the game showing tonight 1/30/2025 is exclusively on ESPN+. The next game scheduled to be on NBCSP is on 2/4/2025 at 9:00 PM and my guide reads "Blackout" for that time. Why is this game blacked on the Regional Sports Network? Thank you for your help.

You are very welcome! The guide may not be updated for that night yet. If possible on the 4th if it is not working reach back out to us and we will see if anything has changed with it. Sometimes with sports they can change that is why we would want to see closer to game time if it updates.

Can you be a little more specific what you mean by "three hours from Philadelphia"? It is possible that you might live in another NHL team's zone (e.g. Penguins, Devils), and the reason you get NBC Sports Philadelphia is for the Phillies and/or the 76ers.

This happens with NBC Sports' two northern California channels - everybody gets both of them, so they can get the Athletics, Giants, and Sharks, but can only get one of the Warriors or (NBA) Kings - not both.

Oh, interesting… I live in State College. This might be the case because Steelers games are prioritized over Eagles games when they are both on at the same time and channel (not a common occurrence because they’re in different conferences). We do get the Phillies and 76ers, but they are also blacked out at times (nowhere near as often as Flyers games and I don’t care about these as much).

I guess my issue is - how do I ever watch these Flyers games? I have a cable company that provides the Regional Sports Network (NBC Sports Philly) but I can’t watch them on there, even though I get the channel. And I can’t watch the games that are broadcast on the RSN on ESPN+ because they’re blacked out for us there, too. If we are technically “out of market” for the Flyers, then shouldn’t ESPN+ at least show them?

We can't speak to the content aired on ESPN+. From my experience, you can look at NHL Center Ice to see if you can see the games. If it's like NBA League Pass, you may be able to just view games for a specific team which would be a cheaper subscription cost.

Yeah, I realize you can’t speak for ESPN+. Do you know if all broadcasting companies have the same blackout zones - like, does the NHL or teams set them or does each broadcasting company have their own? Is there a way for me to figure out which blackout zone Xfinity has me in? Bc it seems like ESPN+ has me in a different one than Xfinity.

user_nhv6i6, It's really hard to see as it will vary how each league, or at times even specific teams, may have elected to sell and/or lesae their distribution rights. If they have a certain partnership with ESPN+, for example, there may be a chance the network may want exclusive rights to certain games on certain days or at certain broadcast times.

@user_nhv6i6 - I can't get the NHL website to give me an answer, but according to DirecTV, State College is in the Penguins' home market.

I am assuming the problem you are having with not being able to watch the Flyers on ESPN+ is with ESPN.
