I have an HBO MAX and Hulu app question.

I have an HBO MAX and Hulu app question.

There are certain shows that only show up as stereo Dolby Digital when the description says 5.1 surround. Only certain show not all.

However, when I switch to my Roku, those same shows appear in 5.1. Any explanations?

Hi @Audiomixer! I hope your day has been wonderful. I would be happy to look into this for you. Thanks for taking the time to reach out to our team. I just have a couple general questions. Are you attempting to use Hulu and HBO Max on our cable box or Flex box before switching to the Roku? Do you have a specific show (as an example) I would be able to look at?

@ComcastAnna

I am accessing Hulu and HBO MAX through the X1 DVR. I use an optical out from my DVR to my preamp for sound.

I can understand if the program is broadcast in stereo only, but several of the shows/movies are in discreet 5.1 surround.

Is it the DVR? Is it just that the optical can't pass Dolby Digital Plus so it folds down to stereo only?

Thanks!

Optical only supports standard DD. You MUST use HDMI for DD+.

There is a setting in X1's audio options for 'Expert' HDMI mode. In Expert mode, X1 will pass on DD+ to a receiver. It may or may not work properly in your situation.

Thanks for the reply. Optical will not pass DD+. Also, my particular DVR doesn't have that particular audio option. I'm just surprised that DD+ doesn't fold down to DD in all cases.

why are you using optical as that is very old and limited technology? the replacement is digital audio using the HDMI cable.
