... my channel listing has 724 ESPNHD and 1205 ESPNHD (both ESPNHD) ...

That may be a remnant of Comcast's "Channel Neighborhoods" initiative from a few years ago, an attempt to standardize channel numbers across all their systems. They appear to have abandoned the idea. At least, the Support article that once explained the idea has been taken down. The only thing I can find on it now is https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/channels-and-programming/grouped-channels/603e57dcc5375f08cdc133d1.

Edit to add: Here's what that Support page looked like early last year: http://web.archive.org/web/20210125163130/www.xfinity.com/support/articles/new-channel-lineup.

Hello and Happy Tuesday!
Thank you so very much for reaching out to our team here with within our very own community!
You've an excellent question!
Commonly, when you see 2 different channels with the same Network, it generally means that there is both a SD (Standard Definition) and HD (High Definition) channel!
On the channel listings, the HD channel is usually listed with an HD after the channel name
(for example, ESPN will be the SD channel and ESPNHD is the HD channel for the sports network)

If you were to check the 2 channels you are currently seeing, is that by chance the case?

@XfinityChelseaA

Using your example of ESPN..... my channel listing has 724 ESPNHD and 1205 ESPNHD (both ESPNHD). Again this leads me back to my original question...... Why the two listings? What is the difference? Should I watch 724 or 1205 for a better quality viewing? Xfinity has me confused!!! Thanks....

We apologize for the confusion, @JayZee. The reason there are multiple channels for the same network is due to what Chelsea mentioned above. There's an SD and an HD option for most if not all channels.

The other reason is that ESPN broadcasts their network in different channels, and it's our job to put their program using all of the options available. Please let me know if there's anything else I can help you today.

@XfinityRaul  I see JayZee's point -- we have Ch. 24, which is EPSN SD, and we have Ch. 850 and Ch. 1205, both of which are ESPN HD. Both carry the same episodes and same programs at the same time. Why two identical HDs?

That is an excellent question. Often times those channels can be set up for different tiers of service. Normally if you have a higher level tier the second HD channels are grouped with the other sports programming on your service for easier navigation.
