XB7 Gateway Connection issues

I'm really at a lose here. I'm not sure what else to do with this modem. Either I got a bad modem or there's something wrong in settings. But every day usually in morning or afternoon. Its just random. But mostly happens in middle of the night. All of my equipment connected to my two switch boxes loses connection. Only way to get them back is to restart the modem. Its like the modem stops assigning the dhcp to them. Once I restart the box and I have to unplug both switch boxes and they pick back up again work fine for 24 hours or so. I don't know what else it could be. I tried a few things in the settings but nothing seems to help. So wondering if I need to get them to send a replacement. If I got a bad one.

Re: XB7 Gateway Connection issues

That gateway is good for what it does. It doesn't like alot of connections to it from what ive dealt with. Therefore I bypassed it putting it in bridge mode and built my own router my first go around. Then I have even tossed on a high end ubiquity router after I got fed up with a full on pc doing all my routing. Both of these have made a world of diffrence and has taken the stress load off its system. Dueling router modem combo systems notoriously are just bad news.

Is this your first Xfinity Gatewaway or is it a replacement for an older one?

Re: XB7 Gateway Connection issues

I had a xb6 also which was working fine. Got this one as upgrade to use the new wifi 6 to upgrade some of other computer to the newer wifi. But I still have some stuff running on cat 5 that need to be on it . Like my samsung home hub. That controls all my lights and stuff. Since the router only has 4 cat 5. I use 2 or 3 switches in about 3 locations to split the load up. It seems like the router is dropping the dhcp connection to them. Because all my items connected to them can't get a ip. I didn't have the issue with the xb6.

Re: XB7 Gateway Connection issues

So is your router assigning the dhcp or is your modem or is your switches? Who is assigning the DHCP? That’s the first question. Once you know keep one device auto DHCP and the others you can disable the auto DHCP.Having multiple devices assigning DHCP will confuses the “he-double hockey sticks” out of your modem

Re: XB7 Gateway Connection issues

FWIW, straight cable modems and ethernet switches don't do DHCP. Routers and combo modem / router gateway devices do.

Re: XB7 Gateway Connection issues

I’m having a similar problem. Upgraded to XB7 from the XB6. Signal loss every night. I have gig service but speed test tonight was 9.7mbps down and 10.2 up. And that’s was AFTER power cycling the router. Router has been replaced once already. Technician was out, checked the line and supposedly it was fine. Another technician is coming tomorrow but honestly, I’m not very hopeful. After reading this forum, I’m questioning the router/firmware itself. I don’t have a great deal of demand on the system. Not constantly streaming. Just my security system and a number of Echo devices. Does anyone have a stable XB7 running multiple devices?

Re: XB7 Gateway Connection issues

I disabled my gateway. (Just use it as a standard modem now. Connected to it in bridge mode.) I now run ubiquity devices and its more rock solid then anything the "gateway" offers and 10x more secure.

Re: XB7 Gateway Connection issues

Were you able to disable it as a public hotspot? Xfinity (Second level support) has no clue.

The xfinitywifi can be disabled from your online account page.

To turn off the public hotspot, go to;

http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/internet/disable-xfinity-wifi-home-hotspot

https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/hide-disable-in-home-wifi

I've seen it mentioned elsewhere that even if that page shows it disabled, sometimes you need to enable it, wait a bit then disable it again to get the public wifi to shut off..

Re: XB7 Gateway Connection issues

Go to xFi my account app ... click internet in the bottom then click on the modem. You will see a toggle to turn off xFi public hotspot. The only other location also is your actual account settings in the Xfinity website which is a pain to get to.

Re: XB7 Gateway Connection issues

I have gig service and about 20 devices connected. All 4 Ethernet ports being used too. It runs smooth. I bought my own Ethernet cables and coax cable as well. I only have the modem now, I used to have netgear router and a netgear nighthawk gaming switch for my hardwired devices. But now I tested without it and it works well. I am able to change the setting in 10.0.0.1 like WiFi bandwidth and channels. I know some people can’t for some reason( I think cause they did the whole automatic WiFi where they mesh together both 2.4 and 5 WiFi signals. I keep them separated since some devices only work with 2.4 and some work better with 5) more work but it pays off in the end.

That's an ethernet switch, not a router. And non-Comcast rented devices do not host public hotspots.

this is what you said in an earlier post  - Ethernet switches DONT do DHCP well the netgear nighthawk s8000 does 😅

Re: XB7 Gateway Connection issues

No. It needs to be hung off of a router.
