How to enable Gb Speed

I just upgraded plan to Gb internet.  Modem is Arris 6190.  Still running at old ≤300.  Do I have to do anything to the device to get speed up?  I thought this was taken care of using DOCSIS by their side.

Re: How to enable Gb Speed

Did you try resetting the modem by sticking a pin in the reset button? Also, can you plug you computer directly into the modem and go to the status page (browse to 192.168.100.1) and post the numbers with the channel ID's, SNR, Power Level, etc.

Re: How to enable Gb Speed

The speeds I had before upgrading were around 300Mbps.  They upgraded me to Gb internet but the new speed hasnt show up yet. I assume they must reprogram the modem from their side.  I do not suspect anything to do with signal integrity as the speed is exactly the same.  I did do the pin reset as well as the reset from the My Account app.  The Arris SB6190 is supposed to be DOCSIS 3.0 and 1Gbps from their website, although the Comcast page with my equipment lists it as 859Mbps (??).  At the moment, I cant connect directly to it, I can try that tomorrow, but I suspect it needs to be repogrammed from the provider side. RIght?

Re: How to enable Gb Speed

Your device is only rated for up to 600(per that same website you saw), it can go higher but can only be provisioned up to 600 plan. You need a DOCSIS 3.1 modem, yours is not, not a DOCSIS 3.0.

Look for modem models rated for gigabit, not for the modem that you have

Re: How to enable Gb Speed

OK thanks, I'll grab the Arris 8200 for about $150 off Amazon.  Had great luck with this 6190.

Thanks for the reply, I suspected something like that since it's a 2015 device.

Re: How to enable Gb Speed

One last question, I have currently my own modem (Arris SB6190) and ASUS AC88U router.  After I replace the modem with the new Arris SB8200, will my service work right away?  If not, how do I alert Comcast about the new hardware?  I sent a message to Support and they sent me a link to their generic site which seems to describe replacing with Xfinity equipment only and requires browsing to that site.  If I dont have service after swapping new gear, how would I browse there?

Thanks,

Bob

You'll need to call Comcast and provide the MAC ID of the new modem so they can activate it in their database.

Yikes, I had to call the other day about my account, took me a very long time to figure out with their redsigned phone system how to get to a person.

800-COMCAST, 800-XFINITY or device activation 855-652-3446.  Good luck.

Connect it to the coax line and power it up. Let it fully sync up with the system ("DS, "US", and the "Online" lights are steadily lit). Connect a computer to it and open up a browser. You *may* see their "Walled Garden" modem self registration page. If so, follow the screen prompts. Have your mobile telephone number, your Xfinity username and password or the account number and telephone number associated with your Comcast account handy.

If not, try calling 1-855-652-3446. That is their device activation line.

If that doesn't work for you, you can call 1-800-comcast and tell a rep that you would like to have a new modem provisioned for service. Have the RF / CM / HFC MAC address and the serial number of it handy when you call.

Re: How to enable Gb Speed

What speeds are you getting? I just purchased my second SB8200 and the max speed I've gotten is 349mbps during off-peak (2am). This is on one computer capable of gig speeds hardwired on a cat6 ethernet cable directly to the modem.  When I connect it to my wireless router Asus RT-AC86u none of my other devices go over 250mbps. I've contacted both Arris and Xfinity tech support numerous times and even had thier techs come check my lines which are normal but no success.

Re: How to enable Gb Speed

As I said in my previous post, I am using a SB6190 now but have an 8200 on order, expect it next week.  I am getting 320-330 from the 6190 all along, they recently upgrade me to Gb and speed  is the same.  Advice from guys here was to upgrade the modem to see higher speeds.

Re: How to enable Gb Speed

Let me know if you get the speeds advertised. Mine only maxed out 349 when I first activated my modem. After the first day I never saw those speeds again no matter what time of day I ran a speed test on it.

Re: How to enable Gb Speed

Are you running Speedtest.net or Comcast's speed test from their support site?

https://speedtest.xfinity.com/

I am assuming, and I may be wrong, that Speedtest.net is measuring speed from the network, through your modem and router to your device.

I am assuming Comcast's is just measuring their speed to your modem.

Re: How to enable Gb Speed

I use comcast speed test as it only uses thier servers to check the download speeds on your modem. Speedtest I believe uses third parties and other ISP to check uploads and downloads. You usually get better speeds using other speed test tools than Comcast but at least it gives them a true picture of what you are really getting.
