Hardwired

I have a new modem and tried to connect to hardwired PC desktops. One gets over 900 MBs the other the light blinks orange for 30 seconds then goes off and get no internet? If I use a router I connect them both to the router the one that was getting 900 goes to 270-300 the other is locked at 100.
