Comcast disable 2.4GHZ WiFi on my Xfinity Gateway, why?

Nothing will connect to my xfinity gateway via 2.4GHZ 802.11 WiFi because it’s inactive and all the devices in my home are 2.4GHZ 802.11 WiFi except my iPhone 8 which connects to my xfinity gateway using 5GHZ 802.11 WiFi.

I can’t make it active because Comcast won’t let me edit the WiFi settings except through the Xfi app. Which has no settings for under “advanced settings“ or any where else.

If I open up the admin settings on xfinity gateway using 10.0.01 and goto connection > WiFi > Edit for 2.4GHZ everything is greyed out. I cannot change anything. Comcast has me locked out.

1. Why did Comcast deactivate 2.4Ghz WiFi on my xfinity gateway?

2. How can I reactive 2.4GHZ WiFi when Comcast has me locked out in the admin settings?

3. How can I reactive 2.4GHZ WiFi when Comcast has No settings for this in the xfi app?

Note: I cannot contact Comcast/xfinity via their customer service number because, as was already stated, they disabled the 2.4GHZ WiFi in my xfinity gateway. Which is needed for the captioning service on my clarity ensemble phone.

Mine is the same but I have my XB6 in Bridge Mode for my Orbi.

Here is a link to enable/disable Bridge Mode.  Do you have the xFi Pods?

@alienist  Be advised that if you follow that link that @RobertWy posted, and put your gateway into bridge mode, you'll have no WiFi whatsoever.

I have WiFi I just don’t have 2.4GHZ WiFi. Comcast disabled it. Thought I already stated that though? 🤨

Log into the gateway at http://10.0.0.1

Go to Connection/WIFI and click on edit 2.4. You should be able to enable it there.

Don't forget to click on save at the bottom..

It does work on mine, just tried it.

 

If it is greyed out , try a reset/pull the power for a min.

Those options are greyed out and as a result of that I am Locked out. I cannot edit anything. Here is my proof:

I pressed the reset button on xfinity gateway again. Second attempt at a reset. Now nothing is working.

OK. have you tried a factory reset? Press and hold the button say 30 secs.

 

This is what I see on the XB6-T gateway.

I noticed last week that there has been an update that takes away control of the wireless settings even in the admin tool. Even if you are not using Pods. (I'm not). The only option left in there is to enable/disable the network, not possible to edit anything else, greyed out as you say.

Control is limited in the xFi app to changing the SSID names/password and hiding the SSID name.

As far as I know.

Now that you filed a complaint, Official Employees can’t help you at all. The complaint has to go through all the proper channels.

Personally, I would’ve swapped out the gateway or use the Xfi app before going the complaint route.

It was already stated the xfi app has no options for re-enabling or making active 2.4GHZ WiFi.

This being how Comcast treats their customers and people with disabilities only re-reinforces the decision to have filed a complaint.

Sorry, but it has nothing to do with disabilities. You just jumped the gun on filing the complaint without giving enough time for an Official Employee to help you. I’d still swap the modem out at your local service center and go from there

Probably some sort of accidental glitch.  Did you try that 'troubleshooting' button at the top left of your first screenshot?   That should lead you through a process to test and restart your gateway that is much faster than contacting support.  Even if your wifi is completely down you should be able to do that from a mobile connection.

I’m on LTE. There is No wifi. Not even 5GHZ WiFi.

Resetting the gateway restarts it. Which I already did twice. It didn’t fix anything.

Actually it does.

As I already stated: “cannot contact Comcast/xfinity via their customer service number because ... they disabled the 2.4GHZ WiFi in my xfinity gateway. Which is needed for the captioning service on my clarity ensemble phone.”

Are you sure?  I thought the remote reset told the device to reload its configuration.  And your approach seems not to have worked.

There are two resets. One just reboots the gateway itself by pressing and releasing the reset button.

The other one resets the gateway to factory defaults by pressing and holding the reset button for 30-60 seconds.

What about the one you do through the xfinity account app or https://www.xfinity.com/support/repair/internet?  Doesn't that force it to download its configuration again?

1. Log in to My Account > Scroll down to Devices. Find the modem and select “Restart Modem”

Lights on front of Xfinity gateway randomly flashed but Nothing changed. It did Not get reset to factory defaults and still No WiFi or internet.

2. Press and Hold reset button on back of xfinity gateway for 60 seconds.

3. 10.0.0.1 Login

No longer works. Not that it ever did. Everything was greyed out. I Now get the spinning pinwheel thingie when trying to log in via 10.0.0.1

4. Pull power cord and wait 60 seconds.

If I seem rude I don’t mean to be, sorry. It’s just Comcast has me at my wits end. I am being made the issue for a problem they created/caused and are refusing to resolve.

It seems that the gateway may have gone kaput and needs to be replaced for it doing all of that.

Also when logged into the gateway try going to Connection > XFINITY Network and look for Downstream and Upstream Power figures.

I don't think anyone 'caused' your problem - if the reset didn't fix things your gateway is probably defective and needs to be replaced.   However, your phone screenshots are confusing.  One of them showed it on an LTE (cellular) signal but the next one showed the wifi symbol when you said wifi wasn't working.   Are you giving the gateway plenty of time to reconnect after a reset?   You should get a solid 'online' light before trying anything else - that can take quite a while to happen.

That’s the conclusion I came too.

Which is why I bought new cable modem and wireless router off of amazon. Not going to come until next month though because of the Christmas holiday stuff. This gateway is junk.

I got the Arris TM822G. I’d rather have a docsis 3.1 modem but I couldn’t find any for under $100 with voice. Most of the cable modems listed are docsis 3.0 anyways.

I got the Linksys AC1200 (EA6100) but I’ll probably have to send it back after it arrives. It does not do 1GigE (802.3ab).

Yes, that’s the “xfinitywifi”. Which is the SSID for the xfinity hotspot. Xfinity gateways can act as a hotspot. iPhone is auto joining that. Not getting any internet through that though.

If Comcast "monkeys' with something, it affects millions of people - and yet you are the only one complaining about hardware with a problem.  And it got worse when you monkeyed with it.   You aren't the only person that would have noticed if all their 2.4 Ghz devices stopped working.

This is extremely deceptive and misleading. I was effectuating a fix per the instructions you-all gave me. That’s Not the same as having “monkeyed with”.

Again, because no other suggestions are working for you, at this point you should just swap it out at your local service center or if you need a tech out to do it, let us know and it can be setup through an Official Employee.
