Wireless Access Point

I have an old laptop that will not connect via wireless to my new XB8 gateway. I have an old Netgear N600 router that I can use for an access point, but do not know what to do to connect and set it up so as not to disrupt the existing devices that do work with the new gateway. Can anyone help me understand what to do to make this setup work? Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but I can use all the help I can get.

Thanks in advance.

Hey there, dbtech1, thanks for reaching out through Xfinity Forums regarding your Wi-Fi connection. We would be happy to help you with troubleshooting your laptop to get it connected. Is the laptop the only device you are having issues connecting? Are you able to connect it to an Ethernet cable?

Hi Jeniece,

I have no problems connecting with an Ethernet cable, the wireless is the only problem. The laptop is an old model that had no problem connecting with the previous gateway, but when I changed to the new gateway, it couldn't "see" it. I've been told to turn off the band steering or use an old modem as an access point to get it to connect. I read where this new gateway will not allow you turn off the steering. The laptop is an old Lenovo Ideapad 570 that probably has a single band card.

Any ideas you may have would be appreciated.

If you have an Xfinity Advanced Gateway(XB6,7, or 8) then Band Steering can be disabled via the Xfinity App:

Go to the Wi-Fi Tab

Wi-Fi Details

Edit Wi-Fi Settings

The last option at the bottom of this page is "Split Bands" It is disabled by default, but clicking this will split the network back into 2.5 and 5 GHz bands.

I tried splitting the bands, but the laptop continually gives me a blue screen that says Stop Code: KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED What failed: Netsws00.sys

Is there a way I can fix this error and get the laptop to connect? Do I need to use the old router?

Thanks again for your help!

Thank you for trying that @dbtech1, we appreciate it. Have you tried restarting your laptop? Based on that error, it seems like the issue may be with the laptop and there may be a faulty or outdated network driver file. Have you also tried contacting your laptop's manufacturer directly to see if they are able to provide any additional insight?

This is an old laptop that is no longer supported by the manufacturer. I had no problem connecting wirelessly with the previous gateway, but after installing the new gateway (XB8) the laptop will not connect via wireless. The old gateway I replaced with the XB8 had no problems with the original driver file. The Ethernet cable connection works fine. The wireless card is no longer supported by the manufacturer either. I can only assume therefore the new gateway is not backward compatible with older technology. I guess that means I need to use an older router for an access point.

Thanks for your help.
