Wi-Fi speed on PS5

Hi, I'm unable to get over 250 or so Mbps on my PS5 when connected over Wi-Fi to my XB7 gateway. This is on 5Ghz band. 2.4Ghz is consistently/significantly slower. I was hoping to get a XB8 gateway, but it seems they are in short supply. It probably wouldn't help anyway, because PS5 is limited to Wi-Fi 6.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi @Perfect_Form

We want to make sure to get you back to gaming! Is the PS5 the only device where you are seeing the speed issue? How far is it from the modem? Are you able to hardwire a device, like a laptop, to the modem to see if there are issues via Ethernet too?

Hi, the PS5 is the only wireless device having this issue. It is on the opposite side of the house from the gateway. When testing speed over Wi-Fi on my cell phone from the same location, the speed is consistently faster. Both are connected on 5Ghz Wi-Fi 6. No issues with hardwired devices.

It may be a limitation on the PS5 or their (or even the game publishers) servers that can cause the speed to cap out, since it is only occurring on this one device. Do you have the option to connect an ethernet cable to the PS5 to have a hardwired connection? That will definitely help it achieve a higher speed since the hardwired devices have a priority over WiFi devices.

@Perfect_Form :

When you are playing games on-line with your PS5, it is using both downloading and uploading.

Uploading is much slower.  I would strongly suggest testing your PS5 by using an Ethernet cable.

The only way I have been able to test speed is through the PS5 system speed test. Maybe it is inaccurate. Unfortunately, I cannot hardwire it where it is located. I was hoping someone else could confirm if the issue is with the PS5 itself. Like I said, other Wi-Fi 6 devices test with higher speed.

Did you ever figure this out? I have fast speeds across the house. But the ps5 has a slow upload and download.

Please create a new topic of your own here on this board detailing your issue. Thanks.

For future reference, it is better to submit your own post as it creates a ticket to get help, and posting on an old thread can delay getting help.

My first reply is still the best way to test the PS5. He could have brought the game down to the gateway connected via Ethernet cable to see if the speeds would increase that way. If it worked, he would have to decide what to do next.

@MNtundraRET thanks for following up. I’m not trying to come off ungrateful but hard wired would be my first option always but that’s not possible for a long term solution. What I have found since posting here is forcing the PS5 to accept the 5ghz band from the OEM (XB7) this did increase both upload and download speeds. It’s not nearly as fast as any other device in the same area but it’s a start.

I would think the PS5 should work fine. I wonder if the broadband in your neighborhood is getting too much traffic and causing upload problems.  Most carriers are not keeping up with increased traffic. It is a big problem in many areas.

@MNtundraRET I have no doubt that hardwiring the PS5 would significantly improve the speed. If that was an option, I would have done that to begin with. I ended up determining that the signal degraded over distance with no direct line of sight to the gateway. I ending up setting up a wireless router in media bridge mode and connecting the PS5 to it. It it isn't any closer to the gateway, but has a better line of sight. The speed is consistently 100 Mbps or so faster than before. I can live with that for now.
