Are you utilizing one of our modems or are you using one of your own modems? If you are using your own modem, what is the make and model of it?
SSID's technically can be 0-32 octets with arbitrary contents. Unspecified/arbitrary or UTF-8. Null SSID's are allowed, according to the 802.11 (2012) standard.
The firmware a WiFi router/gateway is running is going to determine the character set. Also, you'll find some clients aren't going to work with special characters. Underscore is usually OK, but dashes and other characters can break clients.
For Xfinity gear, that's just going to be what they allowed in your phone app for a character set. I don't know if you can even set the SSID in the management interface locally on them now. Most admin functions are crippled.
