What Speedtest does xfinity use for their “ Your personalized WiFi summary”?

My monthly summery always report 20% higher speed than what I’m paying for. My own speed tests, even when my laptop is directly connected to the gateway, shows about 20% less than what I’m paying for. What test is Xfinity running, and how can I run the same test?

I have an XB8 in bridge mode. I do not see any speed test option on the modems admin page or in the Xfinity app.

Final update: I confirmed with support that there is no speedtest option if the router is in bridge mode. The question had to be escalated three times to get that answer. Ug.

I verified. Bridge mode, no speedtest option. Disable bridge mode, an the speed test option shows in the app. Enable bridge mode and guess what? The speedtest option is not there.

@user_l2c9a Good morning! Thank you for taking the time to reach out to our Xfinity Forums Team for assistance with your speeds. The speed test will be in the Xfinity App, under "test your whole home network". Do you see that option under Troubleshoot?

Does xfinity run a speed test on my phone when Xfinity generates the monthly report that I get in my email? I find that very implausible.

I'm not asking how I can run a speed test. I'm asking how can I run the exact same speed test Xfinity uses in the monthly report? The month report always says I'm getting 110% or better of the speed I'm paying for, but I cannot replicate this speed.

@XfinityKassie , can you please find out how xfinity is doing the monthly report testing?

Thanks

I'm not speaking for or in support of what Xfinity does, but the reply you received is accurate. The only method Xfinity gives their subscribers to run a speed test between the "Internet <-> users gateway router" is through the Xfinity app. Any speed test users run through the browser is sort of invalid because those tests include testing all the way through the gateway router into the user's home network, and lastly to the PC. That's where things slow down. I've been about a frustrated about Xfinity's lack of transparency as everyone else when it comes to exactly what they are promising me in my plan. I too see the results in the app that displays something like this: You are receiving %118 above your plan of 300 Mbp/s. Then when is go to a site like Speakeasy Internet Speed Test, the results I receive are like:

>175 Mbp/s download

>41 Mbp/s upload

<15 ms Latency

<5 ms Jitter

The site scores those results as "Excellent"

Does this help you?

user_l2c9a My apologies, I misunderstood. It takes all the connected devices, and averages what the typical average speed is for the month. To be honest, you wouldn't be able to replicate it, as it takes all your devices and speeds to each device and gives you the average for the month. It can vary from day to day; as there are several factors that can impact your speed to your device. Are you finding one or multiple devices are running slower than they should?

I apologize, but I thought I explained what I was seeing in my original post:

My monthly summery always report 20% higher speed than what I’m paying for. My own speed tests, even when my laptop is directly connected to the gateway, shows about 20% less than what I’m paying for.

So no matter what device I use, no matter if using the gateway in bridge mode or router mode, I generally see 70-80% of the speed I'm paying for (1gb/40mb). I always see 40+ on upload, but I rarely see download >800.

No, I do not. The only options are "Need Help now!" and "Restart you modem"

Are you sure when you run a speed test from the App it's not just checking the speed from the phone, through the gateway to the internet? I'm pretty sure there is no way to run a speed test from the gateway (at least an XB8).

Yep, there are actually two different measurements. The Xfinity app's Speed to Gateway test measures the Internet connection directly to a compatible Xfinity Gateway, rather than measuring the Wi-Fi speed reaching the phone you're holding. A traditional speed test on your phone or computer measures the connection all the way to that particular device.

That's why comparing the two can be useful. If the gateway is receiving the expected speed but your device isn't, the difference can help point toward the connection between the gateway and device rather than the incoming Internet connection.

Don't know if anyone has noticed, but there is a new version of the Xfinity App available for the iPhone devices. The speed test is right there in the middle of the screen once users tap "WiFi". Straight forward and to point. Keep in mind this is a test between the street (Internet) and the user's gateway. My results below are accurate. I'm paying for the 300 Mbp/s plan.

Once I turned off Bridge mode, I can see and test speeds.

From my understanding when some people have bandwidth or bridge mode someone can gain great access to your network, someone has done to me. Just want people to be aware because they get on platforms like these asking question like it’s their network account
