Upgrading my internet speed has been a disaster.

First and foremost, I would like to admit that some of what I am going to explain in this situation has been my fault due to lack of knowledge in the area of networking, so here it goes.

On 03/16/25 my new gaming PC arrived and I had set it up.  On 03/17/25 I decided it would be a great idea to upgrade my internet speed to get the most out of my new PC.  On 03/17/25 I was in touch with a representative from Xfinity on the app who upgraded my internet speed from the 1GB plan to the current 2.1GB download / 300 mbps upload speed.  Once the upgrade took effect, I asked the representative why I was only getting approximately 800mbps to my PC with nothing else assigned to my local network.  The representative advised me that my netgear modem/router (ac1900 I believe) was not going to be good enough for the new internet speed that I had opted for. That night I purchased a new Netgear AX2700 which stated was going to be good enough for up to 2.7GB internet speed.

On 03/18/25 my new modem/router arrived on my front door step and I began to set it up.  I plugged the ethernet into the back of the unit on one end and the other into the PC.  Did a speed test and was only receiving 900mbps to the PC without another device on the network.  I then got in contact with another Xfinity rep. on the app, questioning why am I not getting close to the correct internet speed that I am paying for.  The rep. advised me that the ethernet ports on the back of my new modem/router would only deliver 1GB to my new PC and that I would need to upgrade the unit in order to achieve the speed to the PC.  (Totally my fault)  That night I do better research after the information I received from the rep.

On 03/19/25, I located at my local Best Buy an Arris Surfboard G36 and purchased that because it could not only handle internet plan speeds up to 2.5GB, it also had an ethernet port on the unit capable of delivering the 2.5GB speed to the PC hardwired.  I get home and set it up and do a speed test and again to find out I'm still only obtaining 900mbps to the PC hardwired to the 2.5GB ethernet port.  I later find that my PC's ethernet port can only utilize 1GB and I figured that was causing the issue and I ordered a TP Link PCIe Lan card to install in my PC capable to handle my new internet service.  (Again this situation is no fault but my own)

On 03/20/25 the TP Link PCIe lan card gets delivered to my home early in the morning and I install it into the PC and also install/update the driver.  Now with the PC ethernet hardwired to the new 2.5GB lan card and the other end to the Arris G36's 2.5GB ethernet port, I tested the speed to my PC and achieved approximately 2050mbps download and 285mbps.  So now I believe everything is working properly I try to connect to a game and every time I get into a server I'm immediately kicked out for connection error.  Restart modem, computer, nothing works.  Factory reset modem, config modem settings again, restart PC but still same problems.  I do some research and see that I may need to open some ports in the router settings in order to get the games to work properly.  I set the PC to a static IP address and port forward to that address the following:

  • TCP Ports: 80, 433, 443, 3478, 3479, 5060, 5062, 5222, 6250, 12000-65000.
  • UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 5222, 12000-65000.

I uninstalled norton anti-virus AND mirrored the same ports as new rules in the windows defender firewall.  Still I cannot get into one game without being booted for a connection error and the other game is unplayable due unstable connection.

On 03/21/25, I proceeded to check if these ports are successfully opened on my PC by using www.getyoursignal.com which told me every port is still closed.  To double check if the ports were open another way, I turned on Tel Link and opened the command prompt, entered my PC's local IP address followed by the ports that should be opened.  Not one of them is open. After restart and factory resetting/setting up my modem again and still no change, I contact Xfinity and speak with a rep. again asking if the ports are closed on Xfinity's end.  The rep. states that they do not close any of those ports and the problem is not with them nor can they check on their end if my ports are opened or closed.  I contact Arris customer support, believing I may just have a faulty router and none of their tests/methods work to open the ports.

On 03/22/25, I go to my local Best Buy again, return the Arris G36 and purchase the very expensive Netgear AX6000, which is capable of internet plan speeds of up to 6GB.  I go home, install and set up the all in one modem/router.  I check my internet speed and I am barely getting 550mbps download and 6 mbps upload.  I port foward all the ports above to the new static IP address I assigned my PC and check the speed again with the same poor results hardwired to the 2.5gb port as well as the 1gb port.  I try to check again if the ports are open via the methods above and they are still closed.  The rep. tries to tell me today that the modem/router combo I purchased isn't compatible.  I responded that not only is this model recommended on the Xfinity website, it says it right on the box.  The rep. then tries to see what the problem is and does some testing but nothing works and the rep. also says they aren't blocking any ports.

So now what?  I had a better internet performance on a 7 year old Netgear AC1900 modem/wifi combo with a 1GB ethernet port on that unit and a 1GB port on my PC just 5 days ago.   They are sending a tech supposedly to the house tomorrow morning.  Not sure if its going to get fixed. Mildly frustrated.

Hey @MakesMyBrainHurt, Thank you for visiting our official Xfinity Forums Community support page. We greatly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience regarding the Xfinity Internet and local network. I would be more than happy to offer my assistance looking into this further for you.

With having our Xfinity Gigabit X2 Internet, there is a limited amount of modems that are able to support that speed. You can find supported modems by Clicking Here. Networking will take the lowest common denominator and support is limited as it is outside our demarcation.

Was the local technician able to assist further and provide some guidance?
