Two modems

So we are currently renting the current home and would like to add put own wifi. The owner has his modems set up on end of the house and I am attempting to put our new modem on the other side of the house. We both use are using xfinity but my new modem doesn't seem to connect. Is there anything that I can do to fix this issue?

Hello,

I'm not quite sure what your housing situation is, but if you're sharing the house you rent with the owner, there generally can only be one modem at the house.

Usually there's a 1:1 connection for a modem at a house. You can't connect two modems to a house at the same time. Unless there's a way to set it up with the ISP. Most I would assume would tell you "no, sorry only one line per residence" or require an additional line to be installed? Sounds expensive.

Most ISP's will install a splitter onto the cable box outside of the home. (Separate from the metal box that houses the 4-home plot) That splitter will enable one coaxial line to provide internet for the home. Which I presume is the line that your landlord is using. That would mean none of the other coaxial locations at the house are active for internet.

Example: A tech would come out and install the splitter, they'll choose a coaxial line from your home, that is the only line that can connect to the modem. If you have them connect it to the coaxial port in your living room as the hot line, that's the only location your modem would be able to connect to the net. None of the other rooms have the connection to the splitter.

If I'm correct and adding an additional service line to the house isn't an option, you'd likely need to connect your own router to the owner's router and be a secondary. Or if they let you be the primary, you can connect to their modem. As for who is the primary router... you'll have to discuss that with them.

HI @user_3jkubc Thank you for reaching out on the Xfinity Community Forums. The home you are currently renting is it divided into 2 separate USPS mailing address's? Example would be A and B or 1 and 2 added on by USPS. If you only have one address then you would not be able to have a second active service at the home. As mentioned by the community member if same address you may need to look into router type setup or extenders. That is something you would need to work with your landlord on.
