Splitting WiFi bands

I am trying to split my wifi bands to 2.4 and 5.0 due to an app that will only work on 2.4.  I went to my xfinity app, wifi, edit wifi settings but there is not a "toggle" to choose to change / split them as I had read online.  How can I do this?

@user_x5si91 Hello and thank you for taking the time to reach out to us here on our Xfinity Forums! I definitely understand how frustrating it can be to need a specific Wi-Fi band to connect an app. We're here to help! Can you please confirm the make and model of the modem you are currently using so I can confirm if it is capable of splitting the bands?

I’m having the same issue. I have a gateway xb8. To connect my mini splits I would like to separate and rename my wifi bands 2.4, 5 and 6.

I'm sorry to hear you're running into similar problems, user_0kmzao. That said, as a fellow XB8 user, the option should be available through the Xfinity App unless you're using Xfinity Pro or Xfinity WiFi Extenders. Are you using either of these products?

  • Xfinity Advanced Gateways (XB6 or newer)
    • These gateways have been upgraded with software that manages advanced WiFi settings automatically to help optimize your home network and provide the best performance possible.
    • Some advanced WiFi settings for gateways with this software enhancement are not visible and cannot be managed from the Admin Tool or Xfinity app.
  • Xfinity WiFi Extenders
    • WiFi Extenders require that you only have one WiFi network name and password.
      • This allows all your devices to seamlessly connect to the network that will provide the best WiFi signal at any given time.
      • Advanced WiFi settings aren't visible and cannot be managed from the Admin Tool or Xfinity app.

If your advanced WiFi settings are visible and your channel settings are set to Auto, your Xfinity gateway will automatically detect and connect devices using the optimal channel to provide the best WiFi signal at any given time. This selection is based on several factors, including:

  • The number of other devices currently using a channel.
  • The distance from the device to the gateway.
  • Whether the device is capable of connecting using 5 GHz.

If you don't see the 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi channel settings (i.e., WiFi Mode, Channel Selection, and Channel Mode), it means that these settings are being managed automatically to help optimize your home network and provide the best performance possible.

Hello I was able to see the split bands option in the Xfinity app. How do I rename them? I can see them in Gateway admin function

user_0kmzao Hello, and thank you for confirming that. If you're able to see separate WiFi bands listed in the Xfinity app or Gateway Admin Tool, the network names (SSIDs) can typically be renamed from the WiFi settings for each band. If you're not seeing an option to edit the names, could you share a screenshot of what you're seeing (excluding any personal information)? That will help us determine whether the gateway is currently allowing manual management of the band names or if those settings are being managed automatically.

Ok finally succeeded. Here's what worked for me:
1) unplugged wifi extender and removed it in the Xfinity app. Go to equipment, select extender and then remove.
2) Was then able to seperate bands in the App.
3) Scrolled down after the seperate bands options to rename all 3 bands, new names are 2.24name, 5name. and 6 name.
4) Then i put minisplits on the 2.4 band and all other home devices on 5 and 6 band.
