Slow upload with my own modem
I recently switched to a nighthawk 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3.1 cable (B0917R39C6) modem from the Xfinity provided gateway. Download speeds are similar, but my upload has dropped to 6-7 mbps after previously sitting around 100 mbps. I've gone through all the basic troubleshooting steps - anyone else experienced this issue? Worth a reprovisioning request?
Thanks

Since your download speeds look normal, that tells us the modem is communicating with the network. The upload speed is the piece that stands out. When switching from an Xfinity gateway to a personally owned modem like your Nighthawk 32x8 DOCSIS 3.1, a few things can cause this:
- First, provisioning. Sometimes when a new modem is activated, it does not fully pull the correct boot file for your speed tier. That can absolutely impact upload speeds. A reprovisioning request is definitely reasonable here.
- Second, upload channel bonding and OFDMA. The Xfinity gateway supports mid-split upload speeds and newer upstream technology in certain areas. Some retail DOCSIS 3.1 modems, even 32x8 models, may not support the same enhanced upload capabilities depending on firmware and compatibility. If your area supports higher upload tiers and the gateway was taking advantage of that, your personally owned modem may not.
- Third, firmware. Retail modems receive firmware updates through us, not directly from Netgear. If the firmware is outdated or not fully optimized for the network in your area, that can affect upstream performance.
Before we jump to conclusions, let’s check a couple things:
- Are you testing upload speeds hardwired directly to the modem?
- Did you confirm that the modem is fully supported for your specific speed tier on our approved device list?
- If you log into the modem interface, how many upstream channels are locked and what are the signal levels showing?

Note that the number you posted is not a model number, it's an "ASIN" -- essentially an Amazon stock number. The modem is actually a Netgear Nighthawk CM2000, which is not among the modems Comcast/Xfinity lists as compatible with its "Enhanced" upload speeds. To view that list follow the "See all modems" link near the bottom of https://www.xfinity.com/support/internet/customerowned, and then see the devices listed under the "Compatible modems for enhanced speeds" heading.
The CM2000 won't give you 100 Mbps upload, but it should be good for 35 Mbps or so.
