SB8200 Modem Speed Issues
Hello,
I’ve been experiencing some major speed limitations on my home network in recent weeks. I have the gigabit plan (up to 1,200mb/s) but I’m having a problem maintaining high speeds. I noticed pages and streaming services not loading a few weeks ago. I started speed testing. I found that I was only getting speeds around 10-15mb/s down and like 1-2mb/s up.
I power cycled the modem. As soon as it booted up speeds seemed ok for a second, but then after a little while speeds went right back into the toilet. This has been the pattern for a few weeks now. I reboot and it’s fine for a few minutes, the slows down to nothing again. I just collected the status report from the modem. Can someone knowledgeable here please take a look and let me know what you think? I’m not sure how to read these charts.

The stats are fine. Please also post the modem's error log entries in their entirety.
What is the exact make and model number of the modem ?
Is this a WiFi connection ?

I thought it may be time for an upgrade suspecting the modem was failing as this one is 2+ years old now (since I signed up for Xfinity when I moved in). I impulse bought a new arris S33 which is going to be delivered Thursday. At least I’ll have that as a backup for testing and potentially solving the issue if it’s not a line connection problem once they evaluate the situation further.

I just did a speed test from two different computers from WiFi and then hardwired and was at roughly 350ms ping which seems very high from what I’m used to seeing and 3mb/s down and 16mb/s up. I also noticed the ping number jumping around for at least two seconds before the test started. It was way longer than 350ms before it actually settled on that number.
I power cycled the modem and went down to 16ms ping with 550mb/s down and 41mb/s up. This happens every time but it doesn’t last.

Interestingly when experimenting I noticed that sometimes just plugging in a device to one of the lan ports on the router will cause the speed to return closer to normal for a few minutes while It’s plugged in even on WiFi without rebooting the modem. This also does not last however, before I know it streams stop and pages won’t load again.
What does that error log say to you?

My pleasure ! O/k so even though the signal stats looked o/k at that snapshot in time, the error log entries confirm that something is going on. Perhaps there is noise ingress into the line(s) / an upstream channel-return path impairment somewhere.
There are other signal stat figures that can't be read by the modem. They are the "Upstream Rx Power" (Upstream Receive Power Level), the "Upstream SNR Ch." (Upstream Signal To Noise Ratio), and the "Upstream ICFR" (In Channel Frequency Response). These are as equally important in diagnosing connectivity issues as are the modem's stats.
I'm going to escalate your issue to the Comcast corporate employees that are available to these boards. They can check the CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) for any real time degradation and / or error reports, see your node / cable plant and modem health, and see whether or not everything is in the green zone. They can also see a history plot for the modem and poll for those upstream receive signal stats.

FWIW, that channel number marked as (Other) is the DOCSIS 3.1 / OFDM channel. There is a known glitch with some makes / models of modem's firmware where the measuring mechanism incorrectly reads the power level, the SNR, and the bit errors for that channel. So it reads many errors when there really aren't.
And as far as channel number 26 showing as being "not locked", many, if not most local systems have gone down from using 32 QAM 256 DOCSIS 3.0 downstream channels to now using only 31 since the implementation of the DOCSIS 3.1 / OFDM channel. So that would seem to be normal as well.
The error log entries however, appear to be troublesome.
Please also answer my question about whether or not this is a WiFi connection ?
