RE: How can I tell if I’m 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz

Hey, I need help. So I split the bands but from wifi I do not see the new network name I gave the 2.4Ghz band.  Some devices I have can only operate on 2.4Ghz.  What do I need to do?

Hey @user_g1hlrd,

Thank you for visiting our official Xfinity Community Forums support page. We highly recommend having band steering enabled to provide the best service to your devices. If some devices in your home are not able to connect to the 5GHz network, they should still be able to see the network name and only see the 2.4GHz network even through they are the same name. You can learn more about band steering by visiting our 'Simplify your WiFi — Benefits of using one WiFi name and password for your home network' support page.

If you decided to split the network names, you do need to provide each frequency with a unique and different name so you can easily identify each network that you decided to split.

Please visit the Xfinity App, select WiFi, select WiFi Details, and 'Edit WiFi settings' to confirm your network name and passwords.

Helllo can you clarify "We highly recommend having band steering enabled to provide the best service to your devices". I am using a tower for Xfinity. I don't want to split anything I just want  too make sure it connects. The service is always slow.

Thank you for reaching out to us @user_064rbn! Band steering should be the default setting. If the networks were split, you would have 2 separate network names for the 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz channels. The 2.4 GHz is better at connecting devices further from the modem but the 5.0 GHz is better as providing higher speeds.

Are you experiencing slow speeds on a wireless connection, hardwired connection using an ethernet connection, or both?

@XfinityDemitrius I just ran into it when I tried to change my Ring wifi network. Make sure you name the network differently. I added 2-4 at the end so that I could recognize it was the 2.4ghz. It showed on the xfinity app but I could not see the network created on my Wifi either on my mobile or Ring.

I had to call Xfinity Technical Support to have them restart & re-activate the new 2.4 ghz network so that it is receiving the signal on your home modem. Then it will show up on your end and allow you to connect to it. Tim figured it out. I guess you have to recycle it so the signal is passed on & shows up on your home device. Hope this helps
