My Upload Speeds are not what I'm paying for

My Xfinity internet package is supposed to be 2 Gbps download and 300 Mbps upload. My download speed is very near what it should be, but the problem is my upload is only 70-80 Mbps, nowhere near the 300 Mbps like it's supposed to be. I had an Xfinity Technician at our house for over an hour and we determined that the problem is with my modem. I have a Netgear Nighthawk CM2050V, which is on the official Xfinity approved list of modems for my speed package (it's actually considered "recommended" on the list). We power cycled, factory wiped and reauthorized, swapped out to a different modem, etc. and all troubleshooting signs pointed to my modem not giving me the upload speeds I'm paying for even though it is capable of providing those speeds. This means the problem is with the bootfile or whatever software is sent down from Xfinity to my modem. I would like this fixed ASAP since I am not getting the speeds I am paying for. Thanks.

The CM2050v had been approved for the new upload speeds for a few months last year, but then it was dropped from the list to provide "the best possible experience". For faster upload you need one of Comcast's newer rental gateways (XB6, XB7, XB8) or one of the few retail devices shown in the "Next Gen Speed Tier" group with an upload speed rating in the "All Compatible Devices" PDF:

  • Hitron Technologies CODA or CODA56
  • Netgear CM2500, CM3000, or CBR750
  • ARRIS/Surfboard G20, G34, G36, G54, or S34
  • Ubiquiti UCI 

The Reddit link lists the approved devices (although that list is out of date) as well as other requirements for faster upload speeds.

Realize that although Comcast calls some devices "Compatible" and some "Recommended", for all but a few devices those designations only mean "compatible/recommended for use with their Internet service", and not necessarily approved for the new upload speeds.

Comcast could make all of this much simpler and clearer, but they have chosen not to do so.

The CM2050V is not part of the supported equipment providing enhanced upload speeds. Nighthawk wise, the CM2500 is the only one currently approved for our enhanced upload speeds. The only devices that are currently approved for enhanced upload from Netgear are the CBR750, CM3000, and Nighthawk 2500. The CM2050V is really geared more as an EMTA than anything, the only users that access that device are usually going to use it for VoIP service.

I can tell you I have the new Netgear CM3000 and some days I get 250-300 upload but other days it’s 65-70 and no one is watching anything. They told me it was my modem so I spent a lot for the newest supported modem since my CM1000 was capped at 40 upload. The tech still said it’s because I bought the modem from netgear vs Comcast. No it’s not. I’m not sure what to do either. I pay for the 2.5gb plan.

Yes I am. I rebooted everything but my upload speeds are averaging 70 upload with my download hitting a gig on average.
